Fátima Santos: Fado & Beyond

With soaring vocals that tell dramatic tales of love, loss, and redemption, Fátima Santos breathes life into fado, Portugal’s passionate, soul-stirring version of the blues. Her repertoire, a mix of original compositions and traditional songs, showcases her command of Coimbra fado style, an operatic vocal technique seldom practiced by women.

Portugal native Fátima Santos began singing in church, inspired by composers such as José Afonso, Luiz Goes, and Fernando Rolim. Now one of the only female performers of Coimbra fado, Fátima participates in cultural programs implemented by the Portuguese Arts Organization and is a member of the New Jersey Association of Verismo Opera. In 2014, her song “Enquanto as Pedras Me Falam” won “Song of the Year” at the International Portuguese Music Awards.
