Experimental flutist/vocalist Emily Hay and avant-garde sound artist and electronic wizard Thomas Dimuzio collaborate as a duo to create and perform electro-acoustic soundscapes, mesmerizing improvisations of primal noise, drones, intrepid wordplay, and searing grooves. Also joining them for the evening is pianist and composer Motoko Honda.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Emily Hay is a flutist and vocalist who extends the traditional roles and capabilities of her instruments by incorporating the complexity of contemporary classical technique with the spontaneity and experimentation of free improvisation. As an active member of the SoCal and other “left coast” music communities, she has performed in avant garde, art rock, free improvisation, electro-acoustical and contemporary classical ensembles such as U Totem, The Motor Totemist Guild, The 5 UU’s, Otherparts, I Am Umbrella, Adam Rudolph’s Go Organic Orchestra, The Emily Hay Collective, Hay Fever, The Jeff Kaiser Okodektet, and The Vinny Golia Large Ensemble. Hay has toured and performed throughout Europe, Canada, and the U.S. with concert highlights at the Bimhuis, the Ottomat, New Music America Festival, Art Rock Festival, Kulturni Dom, Staion de Art Sankt Peter, Shapeshifter Lab, and the Reithalle.

Thomas Dimuzio is a composer, musician, mastering engineer, and label proprietor based in San Francisco. Long regarded as a musical pioneer for his innovative use of live sampling and studio techniques to create consistently compelling works, Dimuzio has earned a deserved reputation worldwide as an avant-garde sound artist in touch with the aesthetic pulse of time and technology. He has produced radically distinct sound libraries for Big Fish Audio, Rarefaction, and OSC, which have then been utilized by television programs such as the X-Files, and provided mastering services on works by Negativland, Wobbly/People Like Us/Matmos, and GG Allina among others. His collaborations include work with Chris Cutler, Fred Frith, Matmos, Wobbly, DJ Qbert, Dan Burke, Paul Haslinger, Due Process, 5uu’s, and more.

Motoko Honda is a concert pianist, composer, and interdisciplinary artist who has created a distinctive sound through her holistic approach to music and her exceptional sensitivity in relating to other art forms and technologies. Honda has presented numerous collaborations with artists and improvisers such as Wadada Leo Smith, William Winant, Elliott Sharp, Nels Cline, Henry Kaiser, Vinny Golia, Van-Anh Vanessa Vo, Larry Ochs, and other notable musicians. Her solo and collaborative projects have taken her to major national and international festivals and venues, including the Angel City Jazz Festival, Spark International Electronic Music Festival, 19th San Quirico Estate Festival, Ford Amphitheater, Barnsdall Gallery Theater, REDCAT/Disney, Japan/Aratani Theater, Montalvo Arts Center, Duomo di Siena, as well as museums, jazz clubs, and underground venues.
