Édessa: The Heart of Balkan Music
May 19, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
$15 – $20Often-rambunctious Balkan quartet Édessa, known for playing intricate time signatures and highly ornamented modal music with authority and joy, brings to the Poppy a night of wide-ranging, non-dance repertoire and new material.
Featuring:
George Chittenden – clarinet, gaida, zurna, guitar
Ari Langer – violin
Lise Liepman – santouri, accordion
Sean Tergis – davul, darabuka, defi
Using both traditional and modern instruments, Édessa plays a variety of styles that interweave melodies and improvisation with a big Balkan beat, including the ancient and mesmerizing music of the zurna and davul; the lyrical and sweet music of the Greek islands; the haunting, trance-like pentatonic music of Epirus; and — at the other end of the acoustic spectrum — the contemporary Bulgarian genre known simply as “wedding music.”
