Diana Gameros + Dorian Wood: Latinx Chants, Sorrows & Storytelling

April 27, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

$15 – $20

Dorian Wood returns to the Bay Area after nearly six years to perform songs from his most recent album, XALÁ, as well as past original works and reimagined folk standards. Diana Gameros then serenades us with lullabies from her albums, Arrullo and Eterno Retorno, plus new works on piano and electric guitar. An intimate evening of Latinx chants, sorrows, and storytelling, Gameros and Wood also collaborate on a selection of South American folk tunes.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Among the Bay Area’s bustling music scene is singer-guitarist Diana Gameros. Artists like GRAMMY winner Natalia Lafourcade and MacArthur Genius Taylor Mac have become fans and collaborators. From the age of 13, Gameros has resided in the United States, and for much of that time, she was an undocumented immigrant. Now with legal status through a work permit and a green card on the way, Gameros writes a love letter to her homeland with 13 standout renditions of classic Mexican songs on her latest album, Arrullo, which was just named one of the top albums of 2017 by NPR Alt. Latino.

Dorian Wood seeks to glorify both the sanctity and irreverence of intimacy. Through the use of his corpulent body and booming voice, Wood revels in challenging the artist-audience separation, using subject matter informed by his own position in society as a queer man of color and an autodidact without a formal college education nor a strong alliance to any particular community. His work has been showcased in concert halls and performance spaces around the world, including at such institutions as LACMA (Los Angeles), The Stone (NYC), MASS Gallery (Austin), Kulturhuset (Stockholm), and Hebbel am Ufer (Berlin). As a musician, he has released over a dozen recordings, among them two back-to-back albums, Rattle Rattle and Down, The Dirty Roof, which showcase a series of doomsday-themed songs that incorporate over 60 musicians. His most recent album, XALÁ, marks the first time that Wood has recorded a full-length work in his mother tongue of Spanish.
