Dawayer Huda Asfour
A solo for oud, looper, and voice
Huda’s latest solo project for oud, looper, and vocals. In this improvisation-based journey, Huda presents new and old songs and compositions, revisited after the pandemic, and more recently after the war in Gaza, through the lens of repetitions, exploring the concept of a loop and our perception of it. The project premiered in Alexandria Egypt in 2020 and has since been performed at theaters like the Kennedy Center, The Arabic Music Institute in Cairo, the Arab American National Museum in Michigan, the Oldtown School of Folk Music in Chicago, and the Brooklyn Museum in NY.

ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Huda is a firm believer in transcending boundaries, evident in her roles as a musician and educator. A polymath with works in the fields of music, biomedical engineering, signal and image processing, and
social work, she is a natural storyteller whose music, through the tenderness of her oud and the lyricism of her compositions, challenges taboos, and stereotypes. Her musical journey began early in conservatories in Tunisia and Palestine, culminating in collaborations with artists spanning countries from the USA to China. Since the establishment of her first band with Tamer Abu Ghazaleh in 2003, Huda has released two studio albums; “Mars… Back and Forth” (2011) funded by The Culture Resource, and “Kouni” (2018), supported by a grant from the Arab Fund for Arts and Culture. Over the past 10 years, she has collaborated and performed with artists across the globe. She is the co-founder of the DC Palestinian Film and Arts Festival and Mashriq Maghreb, LLC. In March 2019, she was nominated for the Aga Khan Music Awards for the Performance category. Huda has also composed music for film and multimedia projects and has collaborated and featured with musicians internationally. She is currently developing improvisation curricula for conducted improvisations with a keen focus on the intricate nuances of Arabic musical aesthetics and its interplay with language.
In addition to her work in music, Dr. Asfour is also a Biomedical Engineer with over 10 years of research and teaching experience.
