ABOUT THE ARTIST:
An accomplished improviser in multiple genres, violinist and composer Colm Ó Riain likes to sit on borders, though not in a way that Homeland Security’s algorithms would recognize. While deeply rooted in the traditions of his native Ireland, his music constantly looks for connection with other forms—jazz, blues, klezmer, the music cultures of China, Portugal, India, Brazil, Cuba, and the Roma diaspora, to name a few.
Ó Riain has performed at festivals and venues throughout the world, from Alaska to Argentina, Sweden to Vietnam. In the U.S., he has enthralled audiences on stages as diverse as CBGB’s in New York to Fillmore West and Davies Symphony Hall in San Francisco. He has composed music for both film and modern dance performances and acted in Academy Award-nominated film Steve Jobs. Ó Riain has taught in a variety of environments including Visiting Artist residencies at Berklee College of Music and the University of Washington.
