SUMMARY:Red Reels Celebrates Women's History Month
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Red Poppy’s new film series\, Red Reels\, will celebrate Women’s History Month with a female-fronted lineup of film and live music. On Sunday\, March 3rd Red Reels and the San Francisco International Film Festival are teaming up to present a special program of shorts from the festival’s Global Panorama section. Go around the world with a selection of 2012’s best indie shorts directed by women from Spain\, Israel\, South Korea\, Japan\, Australia\, United Kingdom\, Canada\, and the US. From animation to drama\, these short films tell tales of love\, loss\, death\, and hope. In addition to the films\, YeYe Suarez will join us for a live acoustic set of soulful female vocals\, Afro-Latin rhythms\, and lyrical storytelling. \n  \nThe San Francisco International Women’s Film Festival (SFIWFF) has a long tradition of providing the community with some of the best films directed and co-directed by women from all over the world. Since 2004\, the SFIWFF has presented an elective program of narrative\, documentary and international features and short films. SFIWFF film screenings serve as a catalyst for creating and facilitating dialogue through the power of independent filmmaking\, and represent a range of perspectives\, both locally and globally. The festival celebrates the exceptional contributions of women in the world of cinema\, and represents a convergence of excellence in filmmaking from around the globe. \n  \n \n  \nAfro-Latin fusion defines the rhythms of YeYe Suarez. Their music incorporates many of the most vibrant Latin American musical traditions inspired by the rhythms of the African Diaspora in Latin America and the Caribbean. With a vision to promote empowerment\, unification and social justice through original musical and lyrical compositions\, YeYe researches\, preserves and teaches the importance of understanding roots and ancestry and the transformative power of sound. \n  \nJohanna “YeYe” Suarez– Lead Voice\, Dance\nJeremy Allen – Bass\, Cuatro and Percussion\nBraulio Barrera – Percussion\, Voice\nYuriza Jared – Guitar\, Charango\, Winds\, Voice\nBryan Robledo – Hip Hop \n  \nRed Reels films will highlight the work of local and emerging filmmakers and expose audiences to diverse global traditions. Future events in 2013 will feature co-presentations with local Bay Area film festivals like the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival and the CounterCorp Festival. \n  \nWatch the film trailers here\nYeYe’s website \n  \n$5-$15 admission.
