SUMMARY:Fernandito Ferrer
DESCRIPTION:  \nFrom Puerto Rico: singer-songwriter Fernandito Ferrer \nBorn on july 27th 1978\, Fernando Antonio Ferrer Cruz has been a young pioneer among the new breed of singer-songwriters in Puerto Rico. He first appeared on stage in Lares ’97 and from then on has gotten himself known all around the Island and abroad. Originally from San German\, Ferrer draws from the Nueva Trova giants of the ‘70s but has also developed his own language within his work. His percussive guitar technique and impressive vocal abilities together with the good use of subtle yet powerful melody and poetic imagery puts this small-towner’s music in a much wider context. \n  \nHis style is best compared to the works of Tracy Chapman\, Annie D’Franco\, Antonio Caban Vale\, Silvio Rodriguez and Nick Drake. In January ’02 he published his self-produced dedut album “Después de Tanto Tiempo” recorded in Santo Domingo. In it he merged his prior influences as a drummer\, his love for jazz and his passion for folk music from around the globe. The end result is a soothing sound that although undeniably latin overcomes all territorial boundaries. Since then he has appeared in several festivals and recordings in the Dominican Republic\, Puerto Rico\, Cuba\, the United States\, Honduras and Mexico \n  \nFernandito Ferrer On ReverbNation \n  \n$10 admission. Doors at 7:30 pm. Show at 8:00 pm. \n

SUMMARY:Red Reels Premiere: Throw Down Your Heart and Scott Mickelson
DESCRIPTION:  \nAnnouncing the launch of the Red Poppy Art House’s new monthly film series\, Red Reels! \n  \nRed Reels films will highlight the work of local and emerging filmmakers and expose audiences to diverse global traditions. Screenings will explore a unique interdisciplinary approach by incorporating real-time collaborations with artists from varying mediums like dance\, painting\, and live music. It’s a boundary-breaking musical adventure that celebrates the beauty and complexity of Africa – an Africa that is very different from what is often seen in the media today. \n “[Throw Down Your Heart] demonstrates that no other language is needed when two people sit down with their instruments and make them sing.” – San Francisco Chronicle \n  \nFebruary’s screening with feature a solo performance by Scott Mickelson of Fat Opie following the film. \n  \nScott Mickelson is the singer/songwriter for San Francisco band Fat Opie. His narrative style continues to paint both musical and lyrical portraits of contemporary life as an American. The critically acclaimed new release Victoryville (2013) features his unique approach to the banjo in songs like “Crying In Spanish”. He first integrated the banjo on their CD “Hipsters\, Freaks\, Fags & Homeboys” (1995). The song “Bullets In My Briefcase” (1999) also written on the banjo\, won a national band search sponsored by 7UP/(MTV). This included a prize of $15\,000 \n  \n  \n  \nScott Mickelson– banjo & vox \n  \n “It’s American folk-Rock with a post punk edge\, rustic but scarred.” – Alternative Press Magazine \n  \nMore info on Throw Down Your Heart\nWatch the Trailer\nListen to Scott Mickleson with Fat Opie on Soundcloud \n  \n$5-$15 admission. SUMMARY:Sangati Center Presents: Gautam Tejas Ganeshan
DESCRIPTION:  \nGautam Tejas Ganeshan \nCarnatic music with distinction and an inimitable style \n  \nGautam Tejas Ganeshan sings classical Carnatic music with distinction\, innovation\, and an inimitable personal style. Dubbed a “local treasure” by SF Classical Voice\, and “a magnet for local Indian classical musicians” by the SF Chronicle\, Gautam has galvanized the local scene\, his compelling musicality and unique approach enabling him to inflect a tradition through himself so that listeners feel it speaks directly to them\, and that its subtle beauty has grown new roots. Gautam’s music expresses authenticity more than ethnicity\, immediacy more than nostalgia – it is “new music from an old tradition” (SFJAZZ Festival)\, representing the “ecstatic edge of contemporary Indian classical music” (SF International Arts Festival). \n  \nHis performances feature original compositions rendered with the extensive vocal improvisation and traditional rhythmic rapport within the ensemble for which South Indian music is known. Fundamentally committed to musicianship\, his concerts also give place to the art of the song\, wherein prosody and rhyme feature as musical elements\, and melody is jointly narrative with meaning. His texts in his native tongue – born in Texas with the middle name to show for it – allow his listeners an unprecedented experience of the structure of Carnatic music\, and a natural purchase on its elaborate song forms. \n  \nGautam Tejas Ganeshan – song\nAjay Narasimha – violin\nKarthik Gopalratnam – mridangam\nGanesh Ramanarayanan – kanjira\nChristina Boyd – tambura \n  \nRead about Gautam Tejas Ganeshan  \n  \n$12-20 Admission. SUMMARY:Last Night
DESCRIPTION:Paintings by Patrick St. Clair\n  \nMonday January 13th – Thursday 31st 2013 \n  \nArtist Reception Thursday January 24th\, 6-9pm \n  \nThe Red Poppy Art House is pleased to present Last Night\, an exhibit of paintings by San Francisco artist Patrick St. Clair. In this collection\, semi-abandoned spaces allow for a netherworld where structures and remnants left by people have been partially reclaimed yet still retain a human presence\, seen and unseen at the same time. \n  \nPatrick St. Clair juxtaposes the man-made and nature as elements at once in conflict and in harmony. His use of dilapidated and graffitied structures represents a hidden world of interlopers where nature reclaims the manmade and wanderers explore it as they would a garden. The juxtapositions create narratives that veer into territory that may be surreal or magical-realistic. St. Clair risks this for the sake of attempting to recreate a subjective experience of urban walkabout. In depicting scenes that not only exist in the margins between the urban and natural but are also abandoned of all life and shrouded in an eerie darkness\, St. Clair creates a world that is unreal and seems only to exist in hazy\, youthful memories of last night. \n

SUMMARY:Double Bill: Chives + Sturdy
DESCRIPTION:West Coast CD Release Celebration for CHIVES’ sophomore release\, Dads. \n \n  \nCHIVES represents the collective musical output of bassist Matthew Wohl\, multi-reedist Steven Lugerner and drummer Max Jaffe. Their music is a continuation of the jazz trio continuum – yet CHIVES’ repertoire is heavily influenced by the world of songwriting. Their third recording\, Dads\, was released on Primary Records in August 2012 to critical acclaim. \n  \nCHIVES is not only a platform for fluid improvisation and composition but a story of common experiences\, aesthetic intentions\, and beginnings. Born between 1987 & ’88\, CHIVES each have Jewish roots from their fathers with Australian (Wohl)\, Mexican (Lugerner) & Korean (Jaffe) roots from their mothers. They grew up together in Burlingame\, California surrounded by peers and teachers that nourished their musical sensibilities\, and have collaborated together in various settings since middle school for a total of thirteen years – more than half their lives. After recording their debut self-released album Arnold\, CHIVES collectively relocated to Brooklyn\, NY. During their first two years in New York\, CHIVES produced and released For Brian Wilson\, a dedication to Major League Baseball’s Brian Wilson – closing pitcher for the San Francisco Giants. Dads is yet another dedication\, this time to the men who introduced them to the beautiful game of baseball; Steve Wohl\, Jeffrey Lugerner & Mark Jaffe. \n  \n“Chives are a limber group –  the rhythm section (Jaffe & Wohl) bring elasticity and bounce to the alternately airy and driving grooves as Lugerner tangles with the themes\, sometimes playing inside them and sometimes soaring far afield.” – Peter Margasak (Chicago Reader) \nSteven Lugerner – Bass Clarinet\, Alto/Soprano Saxophones \n Matthew Wohl – Bass \n Max Jaffe – Drumset \n  \nSTURDY : sound in design and execution \n  \nChris Sullivan – Alto Saxophone \nHenry Moser – Guitar \nTommy O’Mahony – Bass \nNick de Ryss – Drums \n  \nwww.chivesmusic.com \n  \nAdmission $10 – 15. SUMMARY:Film Screening: Oh Friend\, This Waiting! Free!
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Red Poppy Art House will be hosting an affordable film screening the first Sunday of every month. The first film\, O Friend\, This Waiting! features India’s temple courtesans and most cherished love songs. \n  \nABOUT THE FILM \n  \nCould a song be full of love\, and yet banal and trifling? Such were the padams of Kshetrayya. A wandering poet-musician\, Kshetrayya wrote for devadasis\, the dancing courtesans at the courts of the 17th century Nayaka rulers. His padams became the most cherished of her songs of love. O Friend\, This Waiting! reflects on the entwined fortunes of the padams and the women they were written for\, from the 17th to the 20th century\, while dwelling in the performance spaces of temples and courts of the Nayaka period. \n  \nABOUT THE FILMMAKERS \n  \nSandhya Kumar is an independent filmmaker and editor. She has been making documentaries and experimental shorts since 2007. All her films are rooted in the non-fiction\, and inspired by the desire to make visible the poetry of everyday life. Sandhya holds an MFA in Film from San Francisco Art Institute\, and an MA in Mass Communication from Jamia Millia University\, New Delhi. She lives and works in Bangalore. \n  \nJustin McCarthy is a musician and a dancer. As a musician he plays both the piano and the harpsichord. On the piano\, apart from solo recitals\, he has worked with many vocalists and instrumentalists. On the harpsichord\, he has played solo programs as well as duo recitals with harpsichordist Douglas Amrine. As a dancer he teaches and performs Bharatanatyam\, sometimes as a soloist and sometimes in works he has choreographed for his group of dancers. Justin lives and works in New Delhi. \n  \nThe filmmakers will be present for a discussion and Q&A after the film. \n  \nFind out more about the movie on the Facebook page for “Oh Friend\, This Waiting!” \n  \nNo admission. Doors at 5:30pm\, showtime 6:00pm
