DESCRIPTION:  \nOn Friday\, August 9th the John-Carlos Perea Trio will perform works in progress from Perea’s forthcoming winter 2013 CD release “Creation Story” at the Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco\, CA. Musically\, the ensemble explores the intersections between American Indian\, jazz\, and improvised musics. This performance marks the first time that these musicians will perform collectively in a trio format. The group features John-Carlos Perea (electric bass\, Native American flute\, voice)\, Jimmy Biala (drums\, percussion\, voice)\, and Karl Evangelista (electric guitar). \n  \nTICKET INFORMATION: \n  \nThis performance is free to the public. However\, in order to respect space considerations at the venue\, attendees are strongly encouraged to RSVP and obtain free tickets through brownpapertickets.com. \n  \nBIOGRAPHIES: \n  \nGRAMMY award winner John-Carlos Perea (Mescalero Apache\, Irish\, German\, Chicano) maintains an active career as a performer and recording artist in San Francisco’s Jazz and World music scenes. First Dance (Aerep Music\, 2001)\, his debut recording as a leader\, featured Perea’s original musical compositions and performances on electric bass\, Native American flute\, and pow-wow singing. Thom Jurek noted that First Dance “feels like the late Jim Pepper’s Comin’ and Goin'” (allmusic.com). In addition to his musical activities\, Perea holds a PhD in Music from UC Berkeley (2009) and serves as an assistant professor in the Department of American Indian Studies\, College of Ethnic Studies\, at San Francisco State University. More about him at johncarlosperea.com. \n  \nPercussionist Jimmy Biala is a long time collaborator with John-Carlos Perea. They have performed and recorded together in many diverse settings\, including the Asian American Jazz Festivals in San Francisco and Chicago\, concerts at the historical Paramount Theater in Oakland\, and the Villa Montalvo Center for the Arts in Saratoga\, California. As a professional educator\, Jimmy leads workshops on American Jazz\, Cuban and Brazilian percussion across North America\, Europe\, and Asia. \n  \nGuitarist Karl Evangelista ranks among a new wave of creative musicians grounded in jazz\, 20th century experimentalism\, popular song\, and the exploration of the place of multiculturalism and ethnic co-existence in an increasingly post-cultural\, trans-idiomatic cultural space. As the creative force behind boundary breaking group Grex\, Evangelista has been called “essential current-and-future listening\, his music “a near-seamless blend of modern jazz\, contemporary structuralist composition\, indie rock\, and blues rock” (Tiny Mix Tapes). Via Asian Improv aRts\, Evangelista was awarded a 2011 Zellerbach Grant for the composition of Taglish\, a suite centered on Filipino-American culture; an album of the composition was successfully funded via Kickstarter and released in late 2012. Evangelista holds a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from UC Berkeley (2006) and an MFA in Improvised Music from Mills College (2009). \n  \nShow is free.  RSVP and tickets available at brownpapertickets.com  Doors at 7:00 pm\, show at 7:30 pm. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Scott Amendola Quartet
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis quartet is a more traditional “jazz” type setting for Amendola’s music but lacks a chordal instrument. This frees up Ben\, Josh\, and John to move around in ways that only 3 super deep harmonic and swinging improvisors know how. And what’s guaranteed is a non-traditional evening of improvised music. The quartet will be interpreting Scott’s music from his recent record “Lift”\, as well as music from past releases\, as well as some new things\, and probably some music written by others. \n  \nBen Goldberg and Scott Amendola have a long history of playing music together starting in the 90’s. Ben is one of the most creative musicians on the planet. He knows how to own the music. Josh Smith is one of the few horn players who knows how to make texture\, space\, and energy elevate a band\, but also has is own unique way of playing melody. John Shifflett is the anchor that propels the music in creative ways. How does an anchor move things forward you ask? We’ll listen to Shifflett on Amendola’s last two releases (Lift and Believe) as a leader and you will understand. Or better yet come and hear it in person. Nothing is sacred with this band\, except the idea to keep the music deep and real. \n  \nBen Goldberg-clarinet\nJosh Smith-tenor saxophone\nJohn Shifflett-bass\nScott Amendola-drums \n  \n“If Scott Amendola didn’t exist\, the San Francisco music scene would have to invent him.” – Derk Richardson\, San Francisco Bay Guardian \n  \nScott Amendola.com\nScott Amendola on Facebook \n  \nAdmission: $12-20. Doors at 7:30 pm. SUMMARY:Red Reels and CounterCorp Present: RIP! A Remix Manifesto and officerfishdumplings
DESCRIPTION:  \nJoin CounterCorp and Red Reels Thursday\, April 25th at 7pm as they present an evening of film and live music including remix DJ officerfishdumplings and a screening of music the documentary RIP! A Remix Manifesto. \n  \nofficerfishdumplings recorded works from world musicians and integrated them into an interactive remix platform that allows users to create audio-visual remixes on the fly. He will perform an improvised remix using his platform and allow audience members to give it a try. This technology is part of officerfishdumplings’ larger project called remix ←→ culture\, committed to creating a fair trade remix music where anyone can have fun making audio-visual remixes and learn about source musicians through access to interviews\, lyrics\, and instrument descriptions. \n  \nRIP! explores the notion of copyright in the Digital Information Age\, as technology shatters the traditional wall between producers and consumers. The film’s protagonist is a “mash-up” DJ known as Girl Talk who performs by chopping up and re-assembling other musicians’ songs. This participatory media experiment sounds an urgent alarm to save our culture and right to creative expression from corporate control and commodification. \n  \nCounterCorp seeks to spotlight and ultimately prevent the corrosive economic\, political\, and social effects of corporate impunity around the world by raising public and media awareness and encouraging informed discussion and debate about how corporations actually operate\, and what they add to — and subtract from — humanity’s “bottom line.” CounterCorp presents the annual Anti-Corporate Film Festival\, a three-day series of film screenings\, panel discussions\, and related events held every year in San Francisco. \n  \nRed Reels films highlight the work of local and emerging filmmakers and expose audiences to diverse global traditions. Screenings explore a unique interdisciplinary approach by incorporating real-time collaborations with artists from varying mediums like dance\, painting\, and live music. Future events in 2013 will feature co-presentations with local Bay Area film festivals like the San Francisco International LGBT Film Festival and the United Nations Association Film Festival. \n  \nWatch the film trailer here\nLearn more about officerfishdumplings and remix ←→ culture here \n  \n$5-$15 admission.
