At the age of four\, he moved to San Martin de Los Llanos. It was there\, at the age of ten\, that he discovered the bandola guitar\, an instrument that has since become his life’s passion. While he is the only musician in his family\, his father\, who was the director of the house of culture at the time\, played a significant role in shaping his musical interests. \nAlejo quickly became a highly skilled bandola player and started participating in national festivals\, consistently achieving first place. His talent caught the attention of Carlos “Cuco” Rojas\, the director of the Cimarron band. From 2012 to 2016\, Alejo played the Cuatro Venezolano and the bandola in the band\, taking part in 11 international tours to France\, India\, the USA\, Mexico\, Nicaragua\, San Salvador\, Uruguay\, Argentina\, and Colombia. \nAfter his Cimarrón’s experience\, Alejo enrolled at the Francisco José de Caldas District University to study music at the ASAB arts faculty. During his academic program\, he obtained a second scholarship to study at Berklee Latino in Bogotá\, where he later won a third scholarship to attend the Summer Program Guitar Session at Berklee College of Music in Boston in 2019. In 2020\, Alejo took an admission exam to earn a Professional Diploma at Berklee College of Music and was awarded a $23\,000 scholarship. \nIn the same year\, Alejo collaborated on a song that received a nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album at the Latin Grammy Awards. This album (“Fonseca and Andres Cepeda\, Compadres.”) later won the Latin Grammy Award. Additionally\, in 2020\, he founded his own music school called Chamarreo\, which aims to train new bandola players with a more universal concept of the instrument\, preserving its native sound while exploring world music. \nAlejo Cordero is the author of the book “Acordes y Escalas para Bandola Llanera\,” which contains 1104 chord diagrams and 840 scale diagrams. \nAs a soloist\, Alejo Cordero drew inspiration from great guitarists such as Yamandu Costa and Tommy Emmanuel. With his dream of pursuing a solo career\, he relocated to California US\, where he currently resides. \nAlejo Cordero dedicates his days to developing new sounds and offering his listeners a world music experience. He incorporates various genres into his performances\, including classical and South American music. His style synthesizes a rich blend of Russian folk\, bluegrass\, Celtic\, and classical music while remaining true to Django’s innovative guitar technique. The Jimmy Grant Ensemble will bring together two guitars\, bass\, and violin in an intimate yet energy-charged performance. \nNelsen Hutchison grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area where he began playing guitar and developing an eclectic taste for music at a young age. He went on to pursue his musical education by studying jazz guitar at Berklee College of Music before transferring to the New School for Jazz where he received his BFA in guitar performance. Upon returning to the Bay Area Nelsen began his graduate studies as an MA student in Ethnomusicology at UC Santa Cruz. His MA Thesis explored the critical reception of soul jazz and the ways jazz organists of the 1960s signified conventional performance practices. After completing his MA\, Nelsen continued his studies at UC Santa Cruz where he is now a Ph.D. Candidate in Cross-Cultural Musicology. His PhD research employs ethnographic methods to analyze the political economy of the Bay Area jazz scene and the working lives of musicians. In addition to being a scholar and educator at UC Santa Cruz\, Nelsen also regularly performs in the region as a freelance jazz guitarist. As a performer\, Nelsen has toured with the viral Swedish multi-instrumentalist Gunhild Carling\, performed at the Monterey Jazz Festival\, and recorded mandola on Larry Polanksy’s New World Records album “These are the Generations.” \nDutch double bassist Simon Planting lives near San Francisco but studied Classical bass with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra and Jazz at the Sweelinck Conservatory in Amsterdam before embarking on a professional career. He has performed in concerts and festivals the world over and has compiled an impressive discography with artists like Mathilde Santing\, Fapy Lafertin\, Jimmy Rosenberg\, Stephane Wrembel\, and John Jorgenson. SUMMARY:Jazz in the neighborhood: Scott Foster & Sheldon Brown Duets
DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are available online. It is advised to purchase advance tickets for this event. If tickets sell out online\, tickets will not be available at the door. \n\n\n\n\nJazz in the neighborhood: Scott Foster & Sheldon Brown Duets\nGuitar and Saxophone Explorations\nThe evening will feature an Eclectic mix of jazz\, original and improvised music for guitar and saxophone in an intimate duo setting. Scott and Sheldon are reuniting after a long hiatus and look forward to sharing work from their collaboration 25 years ago and updating their work together with developments that have sprung up in the interim. This will be a concert full of surprises for both the audience and performers. \nFeaturing:\nScott Foster – Guitar\nSheldon Brown – Saxophones \n\n\n\nFriday\, August 10\, 2023\nTime: 7:00 pm doors\, 7:30 pm show\nAdmission: (Online) $15 – $30 / (Door) $35 general \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTIST:  \n\nComposer and woodwind instrumentalist Sheldon Brown has been active on the San Francisco Bay Area creative music scene and beyond for over 30 years. In addition to performing his original music with Sheldon Brown Group\, Brown has performed with a diverse array of people and groups including Anthony Braxton\, Ben Goldberg\, Omar Sosa\, Club Foot Orchestra\, Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra\, Clarinet Thing and Bobby Weir. His extended original composition Blood of the Air (funded by Chamber Music America and Inter Music) premiered at the 32nd Annual San Francisco Jazz Festival\, and was featured at the 16th Annual Outsound Festival. Most recently Brown performed and composed music for Club Foot Orchestra’s score for the classic silent film\, Pandora’s Box\, at the Paramount Theatre in Oakland. \nScott Foster has been a fixture on San Francisco jazz scene for over two decades. He can be heard performing regularly with his own group and as a sideman with the Americano Social Club\, B3B4 and multitude of the bay area’s finest musicians at wide variety of venues. Scott Foster’s CD’s “Basement Sinfonietta”\, “Go Small” and “Night Blooming Jazzmen” are currently available. Additionally Scott is the Performing Arts Chair and Jazz Band Director at the Urban School of San Francisco. \n\n\nJAZZ IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD: \nJazz in the Neighborhood works to improve the economics of jazz performance in the Bay Area by presenting affordable concerts\, paying musicians a guaranteed wage\, and supporting the work of established and aspiring jazz artists. \nArt • Equity • Access. \nART • Jazz is often called the one truly American art form. We honor that legacy while supporting exploration and new approaches to the genre. Jazz in the Neighborhood events provide a space for jazz musicians to be creative\, spontaneous\, and expressive in their interpretation of music. Our Emerging Artists program nurtures the upcoming generation of jazz musicians through mentoring and opportunities to learn on the bandstand. \nEQUITY • Jazz musicians have long been participants in the “gig” economy. Very few have the security of regular employment playing jazz\, especially with the decline of union representation. For many\, the economics of jazz performance has become a cut of ticket sales\, a tip jar\, maybe a free meal\, and often a day job. This kind of remuneration hardly seems fair given the knowledge\, skill\, and practice that’s required to become a jazz musician. So unlike many concert producers\, Jazz in the Neighborhood guarantees musicians a fair wage when they perform at our events. We encourage all venues to join us in paying a guaranteed fair wage to jazz musicians. \nACCESS • We believe that everyone should be able to enjoy live jazz in a comfortable\, acoustically appropriate setting at an affordable price. Many of our shows are free. When events have an admission charge\, we keep the price reasonable and never turn anyone away for lack of funds. Please take a look at our events blog and calendar page for upcoming concerts. \nhttps://jazzintheneighborhood.org/about/mission/\nhttps://sheldonbrownmusic.com/home \n\n\nPREVIEW THE MUSIC: \n\n\n\n\n \n\n \nEVENT DETAILS\nFriday\, August 10th\, 2023\nTime: 7:00 pm doors\, 7:30 pm show\nAdmission: (Online) $15 – $30 / (Door) $35 general \nNote: A limited quantity of additional tickets will be available for purchase at the door unless otherwise noted on the Facebook event page that the show is SOLD OUT. \nPurchase advance tickets for this event \nNote: Purchasing an advance ticket guarantees admission but does not guarantee a seat. On the first Saturday of every even month of the year\, the MAPP transforms ordinary spaces\, such as private garages\, gardens\, living rooms\, studios\, street corners\, and small businesses into pop-up performance and exhibition sites for a day/night of intimate-scale artistic and cultural exchange among a kaleidoscope of individuals and communities.  Due to COVID-19 we have temporarily changed this dynamic program from an onsite to an online series. Thanks to the mastery and innovation of the presenting artists and curatorial vision we are pleased that the kaleidoscope of cultural exchange continues to be an incredibly enriching experience for the presenter and the viewer. We look forward to the days that we can safely present at our neighborhood venue and we are grateful for everyone’s ingenuity in making the online presentations meaningful and unique experiences.   \nThis program is funded by California Arts Council Impact Project Grant and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Relief Fund and SF Art Reopening Fund.  \nWe will continue our work in presenting unique artistry to the communities that we serve. \n RED POPPY MAPP TEAM: \nCurator | Artistic Director | Managing director: Dina Zarif  \nPR and Digital Marketing: Jennie D. Legary \n“SOUL TEARS” INSTALLATION | INDIRA URRUTIA\n \nIndira Urrutia\nInstallation “Soul Tears” \nIndira Urrutia is a Chilean-born interdisciplinary artist of international projection with a very personal style defined by organic elements combined in a perfect harmony that prints beautiful emotions in her work\, allowing the audience to experience different sensations and movements while watching. \nThe Pandemia has kept her stock in Barcelona for three years\, where her work inhabits time\, silence\, and memory\, where weaving interacts to create a surface\, skin\, and little by little\, a presence manifest. \nWeaving is an organic and metaphorical expression and a meditation on the nature of life. We are all bound together\, interwoven and interconnected\, in ways that we overlook in our modern lives. \nHer work has been exhibited internationally in group and individual presentations\, including The de Young Museum\, Root Division\, Mission Cultural Center\, San Francisco Symphony\, San Francisco USA; National Council of Culture and the Arts\, Pablo Neruda House Museum\, Chile; Invited to the VII Biennial of Art and Design\, Valencia\, Spain\, Real Cercle Artistic de Barcelona\, El Borsí\, Barcelona\, Spain\, Fontecchio International Airport Gallery\, Italy. \nABOUT THE ARTISTS\n \nPHOTOGRAPHY\nMarc Hors\n“Nazavzhdy” Para Siempre / Forever \n \nThe escalation of the international armed conflict in Ukraine has caused civilian casualties and destruction of civilian infrastructure\, forcing people to flee their homes seeking safety\, protection\, and assistance. Millions of refugees from Ukraine have crossed borders into neighboring countries\, and many more have been forced to move inside the country.\n“The situation is disconcerting\, this is what several Ukrainian women I talk to are telling me. They agree in shrinking the importance of material belongings\, including the roof under which they raised the children who accompany them\, and which\, as they can learn from the news\, has now turned into ruins. The real heartbreaker has been to leave their husbands fighting with rudimentary resources against a Goliath armed outright. The two typical words in any farewell “see you soon” have been replaced by “love you forever”. The chances of surviving are swinging at the rhythm of the bombs and the decisions taken by political leaders coerced by economic interests.”\nThis series of photographs were taken at the Polish border of Medyka and the town of Przemyšl during the month of March 2022. Photographs that bring us closer to a reality that\, however distant it may seem to us geographically\, puts into perspective the fragility of the social fabric that led us to develop as a civilized species. \nFormat: Fine art prints on cotton paper Size: 13 x 19” – 17 x 22” \n  \nPERFORMANCES\nMy-Linh Le\nSolo dance performance \n\nMy-Linh Le is a second-generation Vietnamese American dancer\, award-winning choreographer\, multidisciplinary storyteller\, and former environmental attorney. She is the founding director of Mud Water Theatre\, a street dance performance collective featuring turfers. As a strutter/popper\, she is the first woman to represent Playboyz Inc. since its formation in 1981\, making it one of the Bay Area’s oldest dance crews. She has danced for artists including Sanford Biggers and Grammy-winning Kendrick Lamar.Acoustic Set. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nRafa Sarria Bustamante (la Gente) and Javier Navarrette\nGuitar and Cajon Duo \n\n\nJavier Navarrette is a professional percussionist\, musician\, composer\, arranger\, and educator living in Oakland\, California\, specializing in Afro-Caribbean music. Javier’s performance and recording career spans over three decades. He has played and studied with many of the greats in the Afro-Latin music tradition and has recorded on three Grammy-nominated albums with John Santos and the Machete Ensemble/ Folklorico Kindembo. \nRafael Sarria Bustamante is a Colombian-Nicaraguan singer-songwriter\, activist\, band leader of LA GENTE SF\, and voting member of the Recording Academy/Grammy’s. With his group\, he has created his own unique blend of Cumbia\, Reggae\, Salsa\, Champeta\, and Reggaeton. His original composition and live shows fuse together rhythms\, dances and cultural influences from all over Latino America and the Caribbean with a distinct San Francisco flavor\, to create an infectious\, high-energy dance party. From his new home base of Madrid Spain Rafa & LA GENTE SF has just released “Lotus Hotel” their first single and music video from their fifth studio album “Entre 2 Mundos”. The album and series of music videos were recorded and filmed in San Francisco\, Colombia\, Spain\, Mexico\, and Morocco. Produced by Rafael Sarria Bustamante\, Maya Finlay & Jordan Feinstein. He is currently on his 2023 world tour with dates in the US\, Spain\, Mexico & more. \n\nSol Tevél\nReggae and World music \n\n\n\nSan Francisco-based band Sol Tevél\, led by Jerusalem-born artist Lior Ben-Hur\, is redefining Reggae and World music with its uplifting melodies and unique approach. \nLior Ben-Hur & Sol Tevél released an eclectic World music album in 2012\, infusing contemporary interpretations of Jewish texts\, ideals\, and mysticism. The band’s passion for Reggae\, a key inspiration for their creativity is evident in their self-titled 2015 Reggae EP. \nTheir full-length album\, So I Wander\, was released in 2017\, debuting at #14 on Billboard’s Top Reggae Albums chart. A descendant of the Mochica culture of ancient Peru\, he embraces his culture’s use of dreams as a transformative catalyst between reality and imagination. This ancestral knowledge is used to connect artists and communities in collaborations that speak to equality\, liberation\, peace and beauty. Arias has created large-scale murals for public and private businesses such as Google and the Luggage Store. As co-founder of Mission Arts Performance Project MAPP\, he conceptualizes and creates multi-sensory art experiences such as\, VideoFest\, Luna Negra\, and ILLUSION. His most ambitious project to date is Tarot in Pandemic & Revolution\, a multifaceted collaboration conceived and orchestrated by Arias where he engaged sixty two visual artists and poets in the creation of a community tarot deck that speaks to historic events that transpired over the pandemic. His shows combine performance art with musical innovation in highly complex but universally enjoyable experience.  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n \nBARRIO MUNDIAL (members of Barrio Manouche) \nFounded by the Spanish guitarist and composer Javi Jiménez\, the group consists of a singular musical body that combines the instrumentation and signature of Jazz Manouche\, Modern Jazz\, Flamenco and Latin-American rhythms. \nBased in San Francisco\, CA the acoustic ensemble performs a repertoire of original compositions with an emotionally charged sound that is difficult to classify but instantly recognizable.\nBarrio’s international roots shine brightly in their music with members from Spain\, Quebec\, Colombia\, France\, Brazil and the United States. They are deeply influenced by a wide range of musical traditions\, and this is how the group’s unique sound is born. \nBarrio Manouche provides a tremendous live experience and transports its audience on a magical journey\, with a unique fusion of cultures and musical landscapes… an auditory and visual feast like no other. \nTAROT READING AND PAINTING\n \nJENNA FRISCH\n \nJenna started reading tarot with a mini-tarot deck on the kitchen counter in 2015 while studying massage therapy and astrology. They experience Tarot as an expression of rhythm and a medium for opening portals of experience towards greater awareness and deeper mystery. In addition\, he was selected to participate in the Kennedy Center’s artist residence program entitled Office Hours (scheduled for March 2022)\, in which he will begin workshopping the process for the sound installation project above. 2021 also saw his inclusion in the InStyle February issue\, which identified him as a member of the “Creative Class Making Atlanta the New Epicenter of American Arts.” He was also identified in Atlanta Magazine’s “Atlanta Rising Creative Class [that] Is Gaining New Recognition on the National Scene.” Finally\, a documentary he scored for the Atlanta Journal Constitution\, “Imperfect Alibi” won a regional Emmy\, he released his third studio project Beacon in September of 2021\, and in December\, he released a holiday album entitled\, An OkChristmas. \nIn 2020 Okorie was commissioned by Flux Projects to create improvisational work entitled “Stir Crazy” directly responding to the isolation that stemmed from the COVID19 quarantines. He then collaborated with visual artist Fahamu Pecou and poet Jon Goode to create a performance art piece entitled HUE+MEN that\, in response to the murders of George Floyd\, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor\, asserted through sound\, imagery\, and poetry the sanctity and power of Black humanity. He also went on to be selected by Emory University to participate in its inaugural Arts and Social Justice Fellowship program\, created by the Emory Center for Ethics. In that program\, he and 5 other Atlanta artists were commissioned to create in collaboration with Emory professors and their classes pieces of art that spoke to the racial reckoning that the US experienced that summer. \nIn 2019\, he had the honor of performing at SXSW for Choose ATL and the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau\, performing at the Oak Hill Stage of the Atlanta Jazz Festival\, opening for Grammy award winning artist Van Hunt\, being a featured artist on the Story2019 festival at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville\, opening for Grammy award winning recording artist Maxwell at the Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park\, and being invited to perform in Havana\, Cuba at the classical music festival Habana Classica\, which coincided with the 500th birthday of that capital city. \nHe is a recipient of the Alliance Theatre’s 2018 Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab grant\, and a 2018 Creative Loafing Readers’ Choice winner for Best Local Jazz Act.
