SUMMARY:Prasant Radhakrishnan's VidyA
DESCRIPTION:  \nSouth Indian Classical Meets Jazz \n  \n  \nVidyA merges Jazz with the melodic and rhythmic nuance of South Indian Classical (Carnatic) music. Led by critically-acclaimed saxophonist\, Prasant Radhakrishnan\, VidyA has emerged with a soulful\, penetrating sound that pushes the labels of “Fusion” or “World Music.” These three artists have an almost telepathic interplay\, incorporating the forward motion of both Indian Classical and Jazz rhythms while elaborating Carnatic ragas infused with melodic richness. The group weaves in and out of the two genres while all the time merging them into one. VidyA translates the language of Carnatic music into the idiom of Jazz. \n  \n  \nPrasant Radhakrishnan: saxophone\nDavid Ewell: bass\nSameer Gupta: drums \n  \n  \n“…Pioneering trans-cultural terrain.” – San Francisco Chronicle \n  \n  \n  \nVidyA’s music breathes at the very center of a cultural crossroads between the North American Jazz idiom and the Carnatic music of South India. VidyA’s music is a new vein of North American music… present tense\, present location\, new culture in the making.” -Todd Brown\, Red Poppy Art House \n  \n  \n“…when these patterns are played on saxophone\, violin\, string bass\, and jazz drums\, there is abuild-up of emotional energy and intellectual complexity which seems to recreate the energy that was present at the birth of bebop in 1940s New York. In fact\, if Charlie Parker or Dizzie Gillespie had heard VidyA at that time\, I think it would have never have occurred to them that VidyA’s music was Indian. They would simply have wondered where these cats had found a sound that was so mercilessly free of the standard melodic and rhythmic clichés.” -Teed Rockwell\, India Currents \n  \n  \nA style that’s madly percussive and sparkling… combines Jazz’s sweet dreaminess with the Indian form’s insistent rhythmic and tonal changes.” – SF Weekly \n  \n  \nImagine ragas and American Blues folded into a single moment. It’s a fusion of Indian Classical and Jazz\, and the leader\, Prasant Radhakrishnan\, 24\, points the way for a number of Bay Area improvisers.” – San Francisco Chronicle\, “Year in Jazz” (January 2007). \n  \n \n  \nhttp://vidyamusic.com/ \n  \nhttp://prasantmusic.com/ \n  \nhttp://music.prasantmusic.com/album/vidya (audio link to album) \n  \nAll ages welcome!

SUMMARY:JOSH BERMAN’S OLD IDEA IN SAN FRANCISCO
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nCreative Jazz from Chicago\, Los Angeles and the Bay \n  \nFor this performance at the Red Poppy\, Chicago based cornetist Josh Berman has arranged music for a west coast version of his group Old Idea featuring Aram Shelton\, Devin Hoff\, Mark Clifford and Sam Ospovat. Devin Hoff will be visitng from LA. Writer Peter Margasak said in describing the music; “Old Idea also speaks to some influences that Berman doesn’t necessarily share with his peers: while they rarely look back further than the late 50s\, he draws on prewar idioms\, especially the early-jazz language of horn men like Ruby Braff and Rex Stewart.” \n  \n“Mr. Berman’s playing merges the textural style of Bill Dixon with old-fashioned melodic trumpeters in jazz from as far back as the ’20s. It’s a record with generous learning but no big attitude. There’s space in it\, as well as harmonic mobility and gentle humor.” – Ben Raitliff\, New York Times \n  \nJosh Berman:  cornet\nAram Shelton:  alto saxophone\nMark Clifford:  vibraphone\nDevin Hoff:  bass\nSam Ospovat:  drums. \nwww.joshberman.net\nwww.aramshelton.com \nhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=guI9qbm3DzU\nhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jSliwj6TB8s&feature=relmfu \n  \n$10-$20 admission. SUMMARY:KATA-VENTO
DESCRIPTION:Brazilian Jazz Originals \n \nWith a unique instrumentation of three flutes\, two guitars and percussion\, Kata-Vento introduces a new sound. This captivating ensemble plays music by renowned composer and guitarist\, Carlos Oliveira\, written from 2010-2012. Oliveira is continually inspired by the music of his homeland\, northeastern Brazil. Often evocative of musicof the piano flute\, a rustic bamboo instrument from this area\, Oliveira’s compositions also delve into realms of Jazz\, Samba\, Maracatu\, Choro\, and “Cholypso.” \n  \nKata-Vento\, (Pinwheel or “Wind-Catcher” in Portuguese)\, has audiences catching their breath at its lyrical sound\, dynamic rhythms and playful improvisations. The three vibrant young flutists\, all soloists and experts in South American music in their own right\, bring a wonderful collaborative spirit to the project. They feel honored to work with such a prolific composer as Oliveira who constantly expands the repertoire and explores new textures of the instrumentation with his characteristic rich harmonies and diverse Brazilian rhythms. SUMMARY:SCOTT AMENDOLA QUARTET W/ BEN GOLDBERG\, JOSH SMITH\, AND JOHN SHIFFLETT
DESCRIPTION:Playing The Music Of Scott Amendola And More! \n  \nThis quartet is a more traditional “Jazz” type setting for Amendola’s music but lacks a chordal instrument. This frees up Ben\, Josh\, and John to move around in ways that only 3 super deep harmonic and swinging improvisers know how. And what’s guaranteed is a non-traditional evening of improvised music. The quartet will be interpreting Scott’s music from his recent record “Lift”\, as well as music from past releases. Ben Goldberg and Scott Amendola have a long history of playing music together starting in the 90s. Ben is one of the most creative musicians on the planet. He knows how to own the music. Josh Smith is one of the few horn players who knows how to make texture\, space\, and energy elevate a band\, but also has his own unique way of playing melody. John Shifflett is the anchor that propels the music in creative ways. How does an anchor move things forward you ask? Well listen to Shifflett on Amendola’s last two releases (Lift and Believe). Or better yet come and hear it in person. Nothing is sacred with this band\, except the idea to keep the music deep and real. \n  \nScott Amendola : drums\nBen Goldberg: clarinet\nJosh Smith: saxophones\nJohn Shifflett: bass \n  \n“Drawing on blues\, hymns\, spirituals\, and compositional tactics employed by Wayne Shorter and Charles Mingus\, Amendola engages his players fully so that each piece develops its own particular chemistry\, growing from the drummers elaborate but well-defined beats.” – Andrew Gilbert\, East Bay Express \n  \nwww.scottamendola.com \n  \n$12-$20 admission. Doors at 8:30 pm. Show at 9:00 pm. \n  \nCash only. No advanced tickets. All ages welcome!

SUMMARY:JOSEH GARCIA: BICHO DO MATO
DESCRIPTION:Joseh Garcia Bicho do Mato 5.27.12\nAfraid of people and tired of empty social interactions he runs into the jungle. He carries with him an acoustic guitar and a computer. He longs to find comfort in the sounds of the forest. He feels like a Bicho do Mato. He is hurt. He is looking for healing and self-acceptance.\n* Bicho do Mato: Portuguese expression used to describe an extremely shy person. \nIn Bicho do Mato\, the singer/songwriter Joseh Garcia takes us on a journey in which electronic and acoustic sounds meet popular music and afro-indigenous spiritual songs from Brazil. Introspection\, wild life\, and magic deities of Amazonian life are the themes of the show. Joseh sings\, plays acoustic guitar\, creates electronic sounds\, and wonderful guest musicians collaborate with their talents. This is his last performance in the Bay Area for 2012. Next stop is Canada\, and then Joseh is ready to take this new show to other corners of the world. In 2010 he released his first Ep Bossa a Trois\, recorded in France and produced by Daniel Masson. In the Bay Area he has performed in respected venues and has created innovative projects: last Feb. he did an unusual and successful concert for dogs. \n“Joseh Garcia’s serene voice and heartbreaking stage presence embody the new wave of Bossa Nova. He composes his own songs and sings them intimately into your ears while you melt. Watch him! Listen to Him! He may well shake the boundaries of Brazilian music and cool Jazz in decades to come.” – Silvia Nakkach\, award-winning composer\, voice-culturist\, music educator. \n\nJoseh Garcia: Voice\, Acoustic Guitar & Music Programming\nDan Magay: Flute\nAlan Medeiros: Acoustic Guitar\, Vocals \n\nDave Salvator: Piano & Flute\nJim e Sparkle Pants: Vocals\nSilvia Nakkach: Vocals & Percussion\n& Guest musicians
