The band is excited to return to the Red Poppy with talented friends Joe Rosato on bass and Zina Pozen on accordion\, along with the delightful dancer Nicole Maria. \nFeaturing: \nLeah Sirkin – violin\, vocals\nTano Brock – clarinet\, laouto\, vocals\nZina Pozen – accordion\, vocals\nJoe Rosato – Double Bass\nSteven Brock – tabla\, kanjira\, frame drum\nNicole Maria – dance\, Middle Eastern percussion \n\n\n\nSaturday\, April 26th\, 2025\nTime: 7:00 pm doors\, 7:30 pm show\nAdmission: (Online) $20-30 (Students/low income: $20) / (Door) $30-$35 general \n  \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTISTS: \nDiaspora Ensemble plays music from Greece\, Turkey\, the Balkans\, and Afghanistan\, and songs in Ladino from the Sefardic repertoire. The soulful and lively melodies in varied meters transport the listener to exotic lands and are often vehicles for improvisation. Leah Sirkin\, Tano Brock\, and Steven Brock are the core members of this family band from San Francisco.  \nLeah Sirkin has studied with master musicians and singers from Greece\, the Balkans\, and the Middle East for over two decades. She has performed with the Aswat Arabic Orchestra\, the Silk Road Caravan\, and Helm\, in addition to her family band\, Diaspora. \nTano Brock is a multi-instrumentalist who has studied and performed with master musicians from the Balkans\, Turkey\, and the Middle East. He leads the Sarma Brass Band in NYC\, among other projects\, performs regularly with Inspector Gadje and La Doña\, and is on staff teaching and leading the brass band and kids’ band at the Mendocino Balkan Camp. \nSteven Brock has been playing tabla for over thirty years\, studying with the master Swapan Chaudhury at the Ali Akbar College of Music. He has been playing and studying kanjira with two South Indian master musicians for the last decade. \nOriginally from Ukraine\, Zina Pozen grew up in a family of classical musicians\, playing piano from a young age. Zina plays klezmer\, Moldovan\, Ukrainian\, Turkish\, Armenian\, and Greek rebetiko with many Bay Area bands\, including the Saul Goodman Klezmer Band\, Orchestra Euphonos\, and Metanastys. \nJoe Rosato Jr. is a Bay Area upright bassist who has played with numerous musical luminaries\, including Lowell Fulson\, Ron Thompson\, Sugar Pie DeSanto\, Tim Weed\, and the Turkish band Lars and In Charge. In a career spanning four decades\, he’s proven himself a versatile sideman adeptly playing everything from bluegrass to jazz to Balkan. \nNicole Maria has been studying\, teaching\, and performing contemporary and traditional forms of Arabic dance for over a decade. A multiple award-winning dancer\, Nicole is known for being an engaging and charismatic entertainer\, for elevating the level of the art form\, and for her elegance and grace.
