Six times at the Mission Cultural Center for Latino Arts\, and two times at the de Young Museum and one time at SOMArts. \nILLUSION is an amazing experience\, sharing the art\, the momentum\, the projects and ideas around us\, the creative process of individuals and groups. More information about ILLUSION project can be found here \nThe MINI-ILLUSION events marks the “10th ILLUSION show” after 5 years!  \nThis is a part of my “3 MINI-ILLUSION shows”\, an artist residency at Red Poppy Art House!  \n  \n\nABOUT THE CURATOR | RESIDENT ARTIST: ADRIAN ARIAS\n \nAdrian Arias (American born in Mochica Land in Peru) \nIs a visual artist\, poet\, performer\, curator\, activist\, art teacher and cultural promoter\, who brings together multidisciplinary artists to engage in community projects with messages of social justice\, racial equality\, climate change\, peace\, beauty\, health\, and hope in the San Francisco Bay Area. \nArias is one of the founders and creators of MAPP (Mission Arts Performance Project) and creator of festivals in the San Francisco Bay Area such as VideoFest\, Luna Negra\, and ILLUSION shows. \nAdrian uses his dreams as creative initiatives\, which he makes come true in performances and community projects. He has participated in international group exhibitions such as the Venice Biennale\, The Ibero-American Biennial\, The Contemporary Museum of Barcelona\, and art residencies at the de Young Museum\, Benamil Spain\, Google new Mountain View building and at the Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco. \nAdrian has been commissioned to do murals in SF Chinatown and Oakland Lakeshore\, in addition to the Black Lives Matter on the asphalt of the Petaluma Library\, and the giant altar for George Floyd at SOMArts. She is also a well-respected educator and presents nationally to music teachers. Chavez is the co-director of the Berkeley Poetry Festival\, co-curator of Lyrics & Dirges\, and teaches and supports writers at Ouroboros Writing Lab.\n \nChavez writes about identity\, human injustices\, environmental degradation\, horror films\, magic\, and ritual. \n \nChavez has received the Pen Oakland Josephine Miles award\, the San Francisco Foundation/Nomadic Press Literary Award\, and is at 2023 YBCA 100.  Their books are Dear Animal\, Mothermorphosis\, the lyric essay chapbook A Brief History of the Selfie\, and Virgin Eyes. \n \nYou can find her work among the trees in Golden Gate Park through the Voices of the Trees Project and many other places in print and in the virtual realm. \n  \nLIVE PAINTING\nLive painting during songs\, poems\, and music by: \n\nMaria Fernanda Valecillos aka “Mafi” (Expressive Calligraphy + Painting) and Adrian Arias \n \nVenezuelan artist Maria Fernanda uses expressive calligraphy to give life to symbols and sound shapes to phraseology. Her mostly black and white work explores the process of harmonizing images with letterforms that allows her to compositionally use space in a unique manner. Proof of vaccination is required.  \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTIST:  \n\n\nDuo Violão + One is a choro and samba trio with acclaimed guitar master Rogerio Souza on 7-string guitar (Paulinho da Viola\, Ney Matagrosso\, Baden Powell\, etc)\, Edinho Gerber (Som Brasil\, Renato Anesi Trio\, Ben Lamar-Gay\, etc\,) and percussionist Ami Molinelli (Grupo Falso Baiano\, Jovino Santos-Neto\, Kenny Washington\, etc.). \nDuo Violão Plus One started with two guitarists\, Rogério Souza and Edinho Gerber\, and the desire to explore and expand the musical possibilities of playing two violões\, or Brazilian guitars. During their first visit to the Bay Area in 2015\, they met percussionist Ami Molinelli and the musical connection was immediate.\nThe ensemble navigates 20th century Brazilian popular music\, emphasizing Brazil’s first original musical genre\, choro\, while also showcasing original works and inventive arrangements. The group’s first album\, “A História de Choro\,” was released in 2019 and featured as one of the best musical albums of the Bay Area by the San Jose Mercury News. \nIn 2020-21 they produced a project to further explore the intersections between choro and samba. “Raizes do Choro e Samba” (Roots of Choro and Samba) was an online concert presented during the pandemic that featured a blend of compositions to highlight these intersections.\nIn January 2021\, the trio was selected and featured at the Chamber Music America showcase\, cementing its place on the national circuit. Excentrik and the Siphr \nArab Soul and Genre Expansive Music \nNaima Shalhoub presents the music of Siphr featuring co-collaborator Excentrik and 5-piece band. Siphr\, Naima’s debut studio record\, was released in August of 2020 that is comprised of nine compositions\, each one representing various aspects of revolution and humanity’s need for liberation. Instrumentation includes oud\, cello\, guitars\, keys\, vocals\, drums\, percussion and bass. Please be advised that no concessions will be served during the event. \n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTIST:  \n\n\nNaima Shalhoub is a Lebanese-American vocalist\, composer\, performer\, guitarist\, pianist\, band leader and arranger who blends jazz\, blues\, Arab musicality and hip hop to create genre-bending and border-defying sounds. \nNaima has opened for scholars and musicians such as Angela Davis\, Cornel West\, Zap Mama\, and Les Nubians. Her music has been featured in the San Francisco Chronicle\, Al Jazeera\, The Mercury News\, KQED\, East Bay Express\, KALW\, Upworthy\, Pop Matters\, San Francisco Classical Voice\, Electronic Intifada and Arab News. \nNaima has risen to prominence in the global music scene as an interdisciplinary artist and restorative justice leader. \nExcentrik\, Born in California and raised between working class Detroit and the constantly evolving political and cultural landscape of Oakland\, Palestinian producer\, multi-instrumentalist and MC Tarik “Excentrik” Kazaleh is best known for his oud and percussion-driven beats\, political vitriol and passionate lyrics. Considered one of the early founders of Arab-American Hip-Hop\, his diverse discography includes the revolutionary Hip Hop group Arab Summit (alongside Omar Offendum\, Narcy and Ragtop)\, multiple film scores\, the experimental Jazz trio The 3 Mohammads\, and many more.
