SUMMARY:The Art of the Duo: Kathy Kosins & Adam Shulman
DESCRIPTION:Harmonious Jazz Collaboration \nKathy Kosins and Adam Shulman bring to the Poppy a musical conversation between voice\, piano\, and visual art\, presenting material from Kosins’ 5 internationally acclaimed CD’s\, including a few selections from her forthcoming soul infused jazz album\, to be released in Spring of 2015. Showcasing her talents as an abstract artist\, Kosins will also be painting live on stage\, an act of canvas improvisation\, inspired by the piano work of Shulman. The pieces created will then be auctioned off post-performance. Adam plays regularly with Marcus Shelby and Anton Schwartz\, and leads two of his own groups\, one featuring original compositions and the other dedicated to the music of Billy Strayhorn. Both groups have performed extensively in the Bay Area at major jazz venues including Yoshis\, Stanford Jazz Workshop Concert Series and the Hillside Club. \n  \nAdmission: $15-20. SUMMARY:Natalia Contesse CANCELED
DESCRIPTION:An Evening of Chilean Folklore and Song \nNatalia Contesse is a singer/songwriter who works in the tradition of Chilean “cantoras” – women who tell stories through song. Natalia weaves a variety of influences into the fabric of her music: the folklore of her native Chile\, the rhythms of the Cueca (a traditional style of folk music and dance)\, and the wisdom of Chilean proverbs. In her latest release\, Corra La Voz\, she pays particular homage to the iconic folk singer of the 1950s and 1960s\, Violetta Parra. With a dynamic guitar and vocal style that is at once dulcet and full of raw power\, Natalia sings of memory and identity\, of traveling through life and the knowledge that one gathers along the way. Her lyrics poetically convey an urgency and a sensitivity to the challenges that humanity faces\, but with a sense of wonder and gratitude that resides close behind. Natalia will be joined by members of Duamuxa\, a Chilean group based in the Bay Area\, whose original compositions are inspired by the diverse musical offerings of the Southern Cone and the United States. They will intersperse their own unique flavor into Natalia’s set for a vivacious evening of South American folklore and song. \nNatalia Contesse – vocals and guitar\nRicardo Valdivieso – vocals and guitar\nMarci Valdivieso – vocals and guitar \nCheck out Natalia’s website here.\nAlso\, check out Duamuxa’s website here.\nCheck out the Facebook event here. \n  \nAdmission: $10-15. Doors at 7:00pm Show at 7:30. \nTickets will not be sold in advance for this event. Please arrive at the Red Poppy when doors open to purchase tickets.

Across these 10 years\, the MAPP has featured thousands of artists\, helping to cross-pollinate ideas and launch careers of artists engaged in social issues. It is a kind of otherworldly art walk\, not centered on commercial corridors but within intimate spaces where the magic of genuine connectivity transpires among people across communities and art forms. \nMAPP stands as a testament to the possibility of horizontal organizing among artists intent on building social fabric within our respective communities\, as much to celebrate diversity and creativity as to counter the erosion of these qualities that occurs when development displaces artists and minority communities alike. \n MAPP Website \nAlways free and open to all ages! \n

SUMMARY:Prasant Radhakrishnan & Kavita Shah
DESCRIPTION:On this evening the Red Poppy Art House will present two full sets of music by different artists\, bridging the worlds of South Indian Classical music and Jazz. Two concerts in one\, the first being focused in traditional South Indian Carnatic music\, and the second in jazz. \nSET l \n\nPRASANT RADHAKRISHNAN & ROHAN KRISHNAMURTHY \nPrasant Radhakrishnan is a versatile saxophonist identified with both the South Indian Classical (Carnatic) and jazz disciplines. The unique vocal texture of his sound on saxophone\, noted for its expressive complexity and rhythmic ingenuity\, reflects Prasant’s continued study of tradition\, constant innovation\, and vast concert experience over the past fifteen years. \nThe foremost disciple of Carnatic saxophone pioneer\, “Padmashri” Dr. Kadri Gopalnath\, Prasant began developing his music over the course of nearly a decade of intensive musical training under his guru\, much of which took place in the traditional gurukulam format of complete immersion. Waking at 5am each morning in his teacher’s home and practicing through the day under his guidance\, Radhakrishnan was initiated into the world of Carnatic music in a format seldom available today in India\, much less in his native Arizona. The rigor of this training\, followed by the privilege of accompanying his teacher on stage in hundreds of concerts in subsequent years\, fostered a deep understanding of Carnatic music. \nAcclaimed an “international mridangam performer” by USA Today and “pride of India” by India’s leading newspaper\, The Times of India\, Dr. Rohan Krishnamurthy is considered a musical ambassador. Having initially received mridangam training with Damodaran Srinivasan over the telephone in the U.S.\, he continued advanced training from maestro\, Guruvayur Dorai\, in India. Rohan has performed hundreds of concerts internationally since the age of nine as a distinguished soloist and collaborator in diverse music and dance ensembles. \nPrasant Radhakrishnan – saxophone\nRohan Krishnamurthy – mridangam \nprasantmusic.com\nrohanrhythm.com \nSET II \nOn tour from NYC\, for one night only at the Poppy… \nKAVITA SHAH – VISIONS \nHailed by Downbeat Magazine as the “Best Graduate Jazz Vocalist” (2012) and winner of the ASCAP Herb Alpert Young Jazz Composers Award (2013)\, Kavita Shah is gaining a reputation as a visionary young singer\, composer\, and arranger. A native New Yorker of Indian origin fluent in Spanish\, Portuguese\, and French\, Ms. Shah incorporates elements of Indian\, Brazilian\, and Malian music into her jazz-based repertoire. Her debut CD “Visions” (Inner Circle Music)–produced by Benin-born jazz guitarist Lionel Loueke–combines the sounds of the traditional Indian tablas and West African kora with those of a jazz quintet. \n  \n“I haven’t been so excited about a project like this in a long time\,” states Loueke. “Kavita is a real\, true musician. She’s a great singer\, but the way she writes music\, she’s not really thinking just about the voice. It sounds like she could be a horn player\, a sax player.” – Lionel Loueke \n  \nShah has performed at Kennedy Center\, Joe’s Pub\, Vermont Jazz Center\, New Jersey Performing Arts Center\, Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Rubin Museum of Art\, and Paris’ Sunset/Sunside Club. She has had the pleasure of collaborating with Sheila Jordan\, Peter Eldridge\, Steve Wilson\, Lionel Loueke\, Samir Chatterjee\, Amir ElSaffar\, Linda Oh\, Rogerio Boccato\, and Yacouba Sissoko.Shah holds an M.M. in Jazz Voice from Manhattan School of Music and a Bachelor’s in Latin American Studies from Harvard. \nKavita Shah – vocals\nSteve Newcomb – piano\nGuilhem Flouzat – drums\nTBA – bass \nkavitashahmusic \nAdmission: $15-20.
