SUMMARY:Gonzalo Bergara Quartet
DESCRIPTION:Playing a modern variant of 1930s Reinhardt inspired gypsy jazz\, composer and lead guitarist Bergara mixes a cascade of arpeggios with the sounds of Paris and his native Argentina. Influenced by the Hot Club of France\, his new CD Porteña Soledad was editor’s Pick on Guitar Player Magazine\, and Vintage Guitar Magazine called it a Masterpiece. Lavishing care on every phrase\, he builds “each arrangement with such lapidary precision and pared away anything extraneous\, the music becomes sculpture.” \n  \nGonzalo Bergara (Guitar and Bandoneon)\nRob Hardt (Tenor Sax and Clarinet)\nBrian netzley (Double Bass)\nJeffrey Radaich (Guitar and Vocals) \n  \nwww.gonzalobergara.com \n  \n$15 admission. SUMMARY:SCOTT AMENDOLA QUARTET W/ BEN GOLDBERG\, JOSH SMITH\, AND JOHN SHIFFLETT
DESCRIPTION:Playing The Music Of Scott Amendola And More! \n  \nThis quartet is a more traditional “Jazz” type setting for Amendola’s music but lacks a chordal instrument. This frees up Ben\, Josh\, and John to move around in ways that only 3 super deep harmonic and swinging improvisers know how. And what’s guaranteed is a non-traditional evening of improvised music. The quartet will be interpreting Scott’s music from his recent record “Lift”\, as well as music from past releases. Ben Goldberg and Scott Amendola have a long history of playing music together starting in the 90s. Ben is one of the most creative musicians on the planet. He knows how to own the music. Josh Smith is one of the few horn players who knows how to make texture\, space\, and energy elevate a band\, but also has his own unique way of playing melody. John Shifflett is the anchor that propels the music in creative ways. How does an anchor move things forward you ask? Well listen to Shifflett on Amendola’s last two releases (Lift and Believe). Or better yet come and hear it in person. Nothing is sacred with this band\, except the idea to keep the music deep and real. \n  \nScott Amendola : drums\nBen Goldberg: clarinet\nJosh Smith: saxophones\nJohn Shifflett: bass \n  \n“Drawing on blues\, hymns\, spirituals\, and compositional tactics employed by Wayne Shorter and Charles Mingus\, Amendola engages his players fully so that each piece develops its own particular chemistry\, growing from the drummers elaborate but well-defined beats.” – Andrew Gilbert\, East Bay Express \n  \nwww.scottamendola.com \n  \n$12-$20 admission. Doors at 8:30 pm. Show at 9:00 pm. \n  \nCash only. No advanced tickets. All ages welcome!

SUMMARY:JOSEH GARCIA: BICHO DO MATO
DESCRIPTION:Joseh Garcia Bicho do Mato 5.27.12\nAfraid of people and tired of empty social interactions he runs into the jungle. He carries with him an acoustic guitar and a computer. He longs to find comfort in the sounds of the forest. He feels like a Bicho do Mato. He is hurt. He is looking for healing and self-acceptance.\n* Bicho do Mato: Portuguese expression used to describe an extremely shy person. \nIn Bicho do Mato\, the singer/songwriter Joseh Garcia takes us on a journey in which electronic and acoustic sounds meet popular music and afro-indigenous spiritual songs from Brazil. Introspection\, wild life\, and magic deities of Amazonian life are the themes of the show. Joseh sings\, plays acoustic guitar\, creates electronic sounds\, and wonderful guest musicians collaborate with their talents. This is his last performance in the Bay Area for 2012. Next stop is Canada\, and then Joseh is ready to take this new show to other corners of the world. In 2010 he released his first Ep Bossa a Trois\, recorded in France and produced by Daniel Masson. In the Bay Area he has performed in respected venues and has created innovative projects: last Feb. he did an unusual and successful concert for dogs. \n“Joseh Garcia’s serene voice and heartbreaking stage presence embody the new wave of Bossa Nova. He composes his own songs and sings them intimately into your ears while you melt. Watch him! Listen to Him! He may well shake the boundaries of Brazilian music and cool Jazz in decades to come.” – Silvia Nakkach\, award-winning composer\, voice-culturist\, music educator. \n\nJoseh Garcia: Voice\, Acoustic Guitar & Music Programming\nDan Magay: Flute\nAlan Medeiros: Acoustic Guitar\, Vocals \n\nDave Salvator: Piano & Flute\nJim e Sparkle Pants: Vocals\nSilvia Nakkach: Vocals & Percussion\n& Guest musicians

SUMMARY:Contemporary Landscape Traditions in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Artist Salon linked to photographic exhibit titled Steam and Ice\, by artist Hiroyo Kaneko\, currently on view at the Poppy. \nContemporary Landscape Traditions in Japan \nPlease join us for an evening with Bay Area artist Hiroyo Kaneko in conversation with Lisa Sutcliffe\, assistant curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art . They will be discussing Kaneko’s first solo exhibition at the Red Poppy: Steam and Ice. \n  \nThe exhibition presents two series\, both examining human rituals and  complex relationships to the landscape. In Sentimental Education\, the artist photographed herself and her family relaxing in the hot springs on the outskirts of Tokyo. These intimate photographs\, soft in color and rich in atmosphere\, quietly examine a time-honored ritual of renewal. \n  \nMore recently\, the artist returned to her hometown of Aomori\, in northern Japan to record the everyday activities associated with a harsh winter climate. The third in a series of pictures exploring human rituals associated with seasons\, this work emphasizes her interest in a deep understanding of the complex ways in which we are shaped by nature even as we attempt to control it. \n  \nTracing the thread of landscape photography in Japan\, the discussion will offer a historical context for Kaneko’s work followed by a conversation with the artist. Sutcliffe and Kaneko will discuss various approaches in contemporary Japanese photography\, from the analytic examinations of Naoya Hatakeyama to the more formal explorations of Toshio Shibata and attempt to draw out the themes these artists share.

SUMMARY:DAMADA
DESCRIPTION:East West Spirit Music\n\nDaMaDa is a trio of musicians based in San Francisco: Luo Dana\, a native Chinese-born singer\, actress and dancer\, Marc Schmitz\, guitarist and composer\, and singer and Dave Mihaly\, multi-instrumentalist\, percussionist\, composer and singer. Together\, they play music from throughout China in Folk\, Jazz\, Beijing Opera and Pop styles\, along with unique improvisation. DaMaDa’s music is compelling\, and bridges the cultures of China with those of the United States in ways that point toward a harmonization of the two worlds of East and West. Most of their songs are sung in Mandarin. Vocalist and dancer\, Luo Danna\, grew up and was trained in China as a singer/dancer/actress and worked as part of a cadre that traveled throughout Guangxi and Guangdong provinces of China performing. Her singing style incorporates the ethnic dance language to express the meaning of the music. Guitarist Marc Schmitz and drummer Dave Mihaly are experienced San Francisco free jazz performers and composers who feel “at home” interpreting this music. DaMaDa’s music is a fascinating Chinese/American collaboration/collision/communion. \n  \nLuo Danna: vocals\, percussion\nMarc Schmitz: guitar\, vocals\nDave Mihaly: drums\, percussion\, vocals \n  \n“This is raw\, cutting edge music\, with a punky attitude….. Luo Danna’s voice switches with\nnatural ease between that of a Chinese opera diva and a punky lolita……. DaMaDa: something\ncompletely different.” – Karla’s Wereldmuziek\, Karla De Greeve — Belgium \n  \nhttp://www.damada.net/ \nhttp://www.jango.com/music/DaMaDa?l=0 \n \n \n \n \n \n  \n$10 – $15 admission. SUMMARY:William Lowe & Kenneth Nash with Hafez Modirzadeh
DESCRIPTION:  \nSIGNIFYING SOUNDS!\nHISTORICAL TRIO OF CREATIVE MUSIC ORIGINALS \n  \nThis evening marks an historical meeting between three leading voices in original and creative music: William Lowe (bass trombone)\, Kenneth Nash (percussion)\, and Hafez Modirzadeh (saxophones). For decades\, all three have been a driving force in the music world as performers\, composers\, producers\, and educators. A true pioneer\, KENNETH NASH has performed with the likes of Herbie Hancock\, BB King\, Cannonball Adderley\, Ahmad Jamal\, Freddie Hubbard\, John Lee Hooker\, composed for the Joffrey Ballet\, and authored a one-of-a-kind teaching concept that has taken him across the US\, Europe\, and South Pacific. Professor of World Cultures in Music at SF State\, NEA Jazz Fellow and Senior Fulbright Scholar\, HAFEZ MODIRZADEH’s original cross-cultural concepts have been documented on dozens of recordings\, including the upcoming “Post-Chromodal Out!” on Pi Records; his most recently published work appears in Critical Studies in Improvisation (http://www.criticalimprov.com/issue/view/127). Boston-based BILL LOWE makes a rare Bay Area appearance\, revealing his brilliance for encompassing all genres that has led to work with Dizzy Gillespie\, Eartha Kitt\, Clark Terry\, as well as Muhal Richard Abrams\, Henry Threadgill\, and Cecil Taylor. Lowe co-leads the Boston Jazz Repertory Orchestra and co-produces Boston’s annual John Coltrane Memorial Concert\, mentoring countless young musicians along the way. \nWilliam Lowe: bass trombone\nKenneth Nash: percussion\nHafez Modirzadeh: saxophones\, winds \nModirzadeh:  Click here for more info\nNash: http://www.kennethnash.com/\nLowe: http://destination-out.com/?p=3384 \n$12-15 admission.  Doors at 6:30 PM.  Show at 7 PM \n(Cash only.  Tickets at door only\, sorry!) \n  \n  \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:FARED SHAFINURY: Fared Shafinury In The Moment
DESCRIPTION:Award winning artist – Fared Shafinury – unearths and explores the world of classical Persian music. From a small sleepy beach town along the Gulf of Mexico\, Shafinury’s musical sense crosses barriers with mutual cultural ease. His compositions thus move against the current\, by retracing the arc from West to East. This is what makes the sound of Fared Shafinury and his Austin-based band\, Tehranosaurus\, stand out from his contemporaries. \n  \nFared Shafinury: setar\, vocals \nKrikor Andonian on Electronics \nJason Ditzian on Clarinet\, \nJason McKenzie on Tabla/Drumset \nRoberto Paolo Riggio on Violin\, \nMichael Shiono on stand up Bass and \nKamran Thunder on Ney \n“In his hands\, the setar\, an Eastern cousin of the guitar\, and Fared’s virtuoso specialty\, yearns not for a departure from Iranian form nor the emulation of Western genres\, but arrival at the point where binaries and boundaries bleed and blend until they dissolve completely. ” -PBS Tehran Bureau \nwww.FaredShafinury.com \nhttp://soundcloud.com/fared-shafinury/barafshan \nhttp://soundcloud.com/fared-shafinury/skies-within-your-eyes \n$12-$20 admission.  Doors at 7:30 pm.  Show at 8:00 pm.

SUMMARY:LULACRUZA: Rooted Luminous Songs Unfolding In Sonic Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:LULACRUZA is an electronic folk duo operating at the junction of the hypermodern and the ancient. Their music weaves together hypnotic female singing\, South American instruments\, found sound objects\, field recordings and electronic manipulation. Lulacruza is made up of Alejandra Ortiz (Colombia) and Luis Maurette (Argentina). Alejandra is an extraordinary songbird and plays the Colombian cuatro\, shruti box\, tar and kalimba\, while Luis Maurette complements with electronic processing and sequencing\, as well as percussion\, charango and Amazonian flutes. \nBand Members:\nLuis Maurette\nAlejandra Ortiz \n“For Luis Maurette and Alejandra Ortiz\, music is a test of the human spirit\, of nature\, and of ephemeral concepts of reality. Through live drumming and digitally altered hooks\, the group manages to create a\nsound that challenges what we expect from contemporary music.” – SF Bay Guardian \n“Now that the novelty phase of Electrolatino fusion has passed and most of the faux-ethnic\, cut-and-paste Snoozedelica can safely be moved to the recycle bin\, a new generation of artists is finding newer\,\nsubtler ways of merging traditional Latin American songwriting with subtly electronic production.” Phillip Sherburne – Earplug \nhttp://communikey.us/esperando/esperando.cc/LULACRUZA_EPK/LULACRUZA%20STAGE%20PLOT%202012.jpg \nhttp://communikey.us/esperando/esperando.cc/LULACRUZA_EPK/LULACRUZA_INPUT_LIST.pdf \nlulacruza.com\nmusic.lulacruza.com\nfacebook.com/lulacruza\ntwitter.com/lulacruza \n$12 – $20 admission.  Doors at 7:30 pm.  Show at 8:00 pm.
