SUMMARY:ARGENTINE ART SONGS
DESCRIPTION:Argentine Rhythms By Classical Composers \n  \nDiscovering the Argentine Classical repertoire with Margaret Fabrizio is a wonderfull experience. We started exploring German repertoire\, Schumann\, Schubert\, in Opera\, Puccini\, Verdi until we arrived at this style of South American art song. We fall in love with them\, new music from a new culture. Music that loves its Native American roots. Carnavalitos from Bolivia\, Tristes from Peruvian Incas\, Milongas from the Pampas\, and Tango Nuevo from Buenos Aires. The composers are Alberto Ginastera\, Carlos Guastavino\, Julian Aguirre\, and Astor Piazzolla. The music is inspired by the Folk\, Farm and Gauchos culture until we arrive at Piazzolla’s Preludio para el aÑo 3001\, a futuristic story of a soul that want to be reborn in Buenos Aires again in the year 3001. \n  \nwww.margaretfabrizio.com\n www.claudiosantome.com \n  \n$15-$25 admission. SUMMARY:Jascha Sings Caetano: Tribute to Brazilian Song
DESCRIPTION:  \nJascha Hoffman is a songwriter and science journalist in San Francisco. His debut album A Cure for Sleep was praised for “deceptively simple\, deeply weird Pop songs” that earned comparisons to Sufjan Stevens and Leonard Cohen. He is currently working on songs based on obituaries and science-fiction films. \nCaetano Veloso is a songwriter and singer who has deeply influenced Brazilian culture since coming to prominence in the Tropicalismo movement of the 1960s alongside performers such as Maria Bethania\, Gal Costa\, Gilberto Gil and Tom Ze. SUMMARY:Amendola vs. Blades: The Musical Tussle Continues!
DESCRIPTION:  \nWil Blades and Scott Amendola conjure various sonic deities though only a duo. Their live shows have been generating a buzz around the Bay Area. The two got their start as a group when Scott had the vision of performing Duke Ellington’s “Far East Suite” in duo with Wil. While quite a daunting task translating a suite (originally written for a big band) into duo\, the Hammond organ had previously been used in the 1940s and 1950s to emulate the sound of big bands. With Wil’s knowledge of this tradition and Scott’s desire to push boundaries\, they were able to pull it off in an explorative\, yet cohesive manner. The duo continues to perform the Ellington suite in their live performances\, while also developing their original material. In performance\, Amendola and Blades cover everything from Avant Garde to Funk\, Bebop to Rock. \n  \nScott Amendola: drums\nWil Blades: Hammond B3 organ \n  \n“Lean and mean\, the ‘Amendola vs Blades’ duo has firmly established itself as one of the liveliest acts in the Bay Area”- Jazz Observer \n  \n  \nwww.scottamendola.com\nwww.wilblades.com\nhttp://www.facebook.com/pages/Amendola-Vs-Blades \n  \n  \n$12-$20 admission. SUMMARY:Kabile: Music From Bulgaria
DESCRIPTION:  \nKabile was formed in 1978 and became one of the most popular bands in Thrace. Based in the city of Yambol\, the group took its name from the village of Kabile\, where they performed one of their earliest gigs. The group specializes in performing native music on traditional village instruments\, an acoustic experience quite different from that played on Western instruments influenced by American Jazz. This form of Bulgarian wedding music has attracted worldwide attention and scholarship for its incredible virtuosity and musicianship. SUMMARY:Shifting Margins - October Exhibition at the Poppy
DESCRIPTION:September 27 – November 10 \n  \nCuratorial Discussion: November 7 @ 6:00 pm \n  \nShifting Margins is a two-part exhibition curated by Bay Area curatorial organization OFF- Space running concurrently at The Red Poppy Art House and Aggregate Space in West Oakland. This two-part group exhibition brings together a variety of works that inspire deliberation\, consideration and argument in order to grapple with the location\, meaning and use of the edge\, outsider-ness\, privilege and what it means to be “on the margin” whether by choice or by force of circumstance. Shifting Margins will embrace the center\, the periphery and the bridge between those concepts through the use of two locations “The City” (San Francisco) the perceived cultural and social center and its “marginal” sister city (Oakland) noted center of racial and social upheaval.

In keeping with this spirit\, the music and concepts are original (penned by Hoff) and strive to push the principle of liberation through music always one step further.\nDevin Ray Hoff: acoustic bass\, voice\nHoward Wiley: tenor saxophone\nNick Mazzarella: alto saxophone\nDarrell Green: drums\nDevin Hoff: bass \n  \nhttp://devinhoff.tumblr.com/ \n  \n$5 admission.
