SUMMARY:Erik Jekabson String-tet
DESCRIPTION:  \nReview of the String-tet’s new CD “Anti-Mass”: Much like a smaller version of the Gil Evans Orchestra with Miles Davis\, Jekabson seamlessly interweaves his string arrangements with the rhythm section to create a kind of harmonic bed over which he and (a) saxophonist can lay down their precise improvisational lines. The results blur the lines between Jazz and Classical in the most pleasing way\,turning fans of either into fans of both. \n  \nErik Jekabson: trumpet\nMike Zilber: sax\nAnthony Blea: violin\nCharith Premawardhana:viola\nJohn Wiitala: bass\nSmith Dobson: drums and vibes \n  \n$10-$15 admission. She plays contemporary and world music in different projects as a percussionist\, multi-instrumentalist and composer. She authors and performs music for theater\, dance performances\, exhibitions as well as soundtracks for movies with internationally acclaimed musicians. \n  \nFor many years she has been involved in the artistic direction of multi-disciplinary performances in Europe and in the US. GAIA MOBILIJ Calabrian lyre and accordion\, MARCO GHEZZO violin\, LUCA RUSSO acoustic guitar\, PEPPINO LEONE percussions and traditional Southern Italian frame drums are the means of this mental\, spatial and musical voyage – between gipsy and sephardic sounds\, Balcans syncopated rhythms and the obsessed tarantella. \n  \nGaia Mobilij: vocals\, accordion\, lyra\nGiuseppe Leone: vocals\, percussions\nMarco Ghezzo: violin\nLuca Russo: guitar \n  \nTaluna on the web\n Tauluna on ReverbNation\nTaluna “Pecora Nera”on YouTube \n  \n$10-15 Admission. SUMMARY:Film Screening: Oh Friend\, This Waiting! Free!
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Red Poppy Art House will be hosting an affordable film screening the first Sunday of every month. The first film\, O Friend\, This Waiting! features India’s temple courtesans and most cherished love songs. \n  \nABOUT THE FILM \n  \nCould a song be full of love\, and yet banal and trifling? Such were the padams of Kshetrayya. A wandering poet-musician\, Kshetrayya wrote for devadasis\, the dancing courtesans at the courts of the 17th century Nayaka rulers. His padams became the most cherished of her songs of love. O Friend\, This Waiting! reflects on the entwined fortunes of the padams and the women they were written for\, from the 17th to the 20th century\, while dwelling in the performance spaces of temples and courts of the Nayaka period. \n  \nABOUT THE FILMMAKERS \n  \nSandhya Kumar is an independent filmmaker and editor. She has been making documentaries and experimental shorts since 2007. All her films are rooted in the non-fiction\, and inspired by the desire to make visible the poetry of everyday life. Sandhya holds an MFA in Film from San Francisco Art Institute\, and an MA in Mass Communication from Jamia Millia University\, New Delhi. She lives and works in Bangalore. \n  \nJustin McCarthy is a musician and a dancer. As a musician he plays both the piano and the harpsichord. On the piano\, apart from solo recitals\, he has worked with many vocalists and instrumentalists. On the harpsichord\, he has played solo programs as well as duo recitals with harpsichordist Douglas Amrine. As a dancer he teaches and performs Bharatanatyam\, sometimes as a soloist and sometimes in works he has choreographed for his group of dancers. Justin lives and works in New Delhi. \n  \nThe filmmakers will be present for a discussion and Q&A after the film. \n  \nFind out more about the movie on the Facebook page for “Oh Friend\, This Waiting!” \n  \nNo admission. Doors at 5:30pm\, showtime 6:00pm

SUMMARY:Foxtails Brigade
DESCRIPTION:Time is Passed CD Release Show \n  \nFor every innocent child eagerly awaiting the season of Christmas lights\, ornaments\, and candy canes there is at least one jaded soul dreading the dirge of shopping lines\, forced family gatherings and the same mind-numbing songs on constant repeat. Cynics feeling the latter will likely find a lot to identify with on Foxtails Brigade’s Time Is Passed. It’s not a holiday album per se\, but the sardonic tone of yuletide bemoaners “Unfairness Awareness” and “I’m Not Really In The Christmas Mood This Year” is a theme that runs throughout almost every other song. \n“I used to genuinely look forward to the holidays”\, says front-girl Laura Weinbach\, “but when you see the seemingly endless shelves at Walgreens and Rite Aid change to “Christmas” on cue every November 1st it just kind of kills it for me.\n  \nThis isn’t to say that Time Is Passed won’t appeal to happy people as well. Any indie music fan will find a lot to like in the dreamy textures of songs such as “The Unloved” and “Afterglow”\, thanks in part to the lush production by band-member Anton Patzner\, a multi-instrumentalist who has worked with the likes of Bright Eyes\, Mates of State\, and Pinback. Fans of classic American jazz standards will also undoubtedly turn their heads on tracks like “We’ll Always Have The Moon” and “Lost”.\n  \n“Jazz tapes were my punishments growing up”\, says Weinbach who’s father\, cult filmmaker Robert Weinbach (Freakmaker\, Shiver) would force her to learn songs whenever she would get in trouble. “I didn’t really appreciate it at the time but now all those singers (Billie Holiday\, Blossom Dearie\, June Christie\, Edith Piaf) are undeniably a part of my musical psyche and for that\, I am thankful.”\n  \nWhether or not you’re “in the Christmas mood this year”\, Foxtails Brigade will certainly put some kind of a smile on your face. Bay Area music fans are already widely familiar with the bands eclectic “chamber-pop” live shows which include violin\, vibraphone and a kitchenware drum kit. Fans on Youtube have a lot to keep them busy as well\, including the already-released music video for “I’m Not Really In The Christmas Mood This Year” and the quirky\, animated Kickstarter video that helped the band release Time Is Passed on their own\, newly-formed label Actual Independent Records. The band’s best videos are conveniently on display at Foxtailsbrigade.com.

SUMMARY:“POP!”
DESCRIPTION:Photo by Jack Androvich\n  \n“POP!”\nThursday November 15th 2012 – Saturday January 12th 2013\n  \nThe Red Poppy Art House is pleased to present POP!\, our latest exhibit in partnership with Bay Area Photographers Collective (BAPC). “POP!” is a group exhibition of photographs from the members of BAPC that evokes both a startling and invigorating energy. This exhibit is a curated selection of bold and dynamic works from BAPC members who employ diverse photographic methods to express both the emotional and the abstract uncanny. \n  \nLike the audible POP! of a balloon expiring\, these works have in common a strong emotional resonance that intends to jolt the viewer to question the artifice of our popular culture. Through bold imagery\, high color and movement\, “POP!” unites these intellectual ideas and further examines the role of artifice as a photographic element by juxtaposing straight photography and constructed images. This show invites the viewer to a celebration of the unsettling and uncertainty that lies beneath the surface of modern\, glittering beauty. \n  \nArtist Reception and Holiday Sale: Thursday December 13th\, 6-9pm. \nArtists’ Talk and Afternoon Sale: Sunday December 16th\, 12-4pm.

SUMMARY:St. Tropez + Yesway
DESCRIPTION:Eclectic Indie Rock \n  \nSt .Tropez is an eclectic indie rock band based in Oakland\, California. Band members Sanjay Vora (vocals\, guitar\, keys)\, Akiyoshi Ehara (bass\, also of The Seshen)\, Jeremy Fisch (drums) and special guest member Lalin St. Juste (vocals\, also of the Seshen) make music that explores memories and the simultaneous joy and melancholy we experience contemplating passing moments which are gone forever. \n  \nSt. Tropez on Facebook\nListen to St. Tropez on Soundcloud \n \nYesway has been called a “floating\, flowing faucet of magical unification” and “the hottest new supergroup in San Francisco”. Supergroup isn’t often a term used to describe duos\, but in this case it works. Live\, their voices literally melt together and their performances are intimate yet expansive. The budding project is a collaboration between best friends\, Kacey Johansing and Emily Ritz. \n  \nThe two have been involved in the Bay Area music scene for years. Kacey\, other than having quite the solo career has lent her talents to projects such as Geographer and The Blank Tapes while Emily is a part of the bands Devotionals and DRMS. Three years ago\, the two began playing music together in the experimental folk ensemble Honeycomb and have since grown and woven their creative song writing and soulful expression into a power duo. Live and in recordings they are often backed by Vibraphone man about town\, Andrew Maguire who also plays with Will Sprott and Thao and Mirah. Yesway is an exquisite illustration of a rare and powerful connection shared by two potent songwriters. \n  \nYesway on Facebook \n  \n$10-$15 admission. Doors at 7:30 pm. Show at 8:00 pm.
