SUMMARY:Red Reels: Sita Sings The Blues (Film)
DESCRIPTION:Sita is a Hindu goddess\, the leading lady of India’s epic the Ramayana and a dutiful wife who follows her husband Rama on a 14 year exile to a forest\, only to be kidnapped by an evil king from Sri Lanka. Despite remaining faithful to her husband\, Sita is put through many tests. Nina (the filmmaker Nina Paley herself) is an artist who finds parallels in Sita’s life when her husband – in India on a work project – decides to break up their marriage and dump her via email. Three hilarious Indonesian shadow puppets with Indian accents – linking the popularity of the Ramayana from India all the way to the Far East – narrate both the ancient tragedy and modern comedy in this beautifully animated interpretation of the epic. \n  \nIn her first feature length film\, Paley juxtaposes multiple narrative and visual styles to create a highly entertaining yet moving vision of the Ramayana. Musical numbers choreographed to the 1920’s jazz vocals of Annette Hanshaw feature a cast of hundreds: flying monkeys\, evil monsters\, gods\, goddesses\, warriors\, sages\, and winged eyeballs. A tale of truth\, justice and a woman’s cry for equal treatment. Sita Sings the Blues earns its tagline as “The Greatest Break-Up Story Ever Told.” \n  \nAdmission: $5-10. Doors at 7:00 Show at 7:30. \n  \nTickets will not be sold in advance for this event. Please arrive at the Red Poppy when doors open to purchase tickets. \n

SUMMARY:Scott Amendola Quartet
DESCRIPTION:  \nThis quartet is a more traditional “jazz” type setting for Amendola’s music but lacks a chordal instrument. This frees up Ben\, Josh\, and John to move around in ways that only 3 super deep harmonic and swinging improvisors know how. And what’s guaranteed is a non-traditional evening of improvised music. The quartet will be interpreting Scott’s music from his recent record “Lift”\, as well as music from past releases\, as well as some new things\, and probably some music written by others. \n  \nBen Goldberg and Scott Amendola have a long history of playing music together starting in the 90’s. Ben is one of the most creative musicians on the planet. He knows how to own the music. Josh Smith is one of the few horn players who knows how to make texture\, space\, and energy elevate a band\, but also has is own unique way of playing melody. John Shifflett is the anchor that propels the music in creative ways. How does an anchor move things forward you ask? We’ll listen to Shifflett on Amendola’s last two releases (Lift and Believe) as a leader and you will understand. Or better yet come and hear it in person. Nothing is sacred with this band\, except the idea to keep the music deep and real. \n  \nBen Goldberg-clarinet\nJosh Smith-tenor saxophone\nJohn Shifflett-bass\nScott Amendola-drums \n  \n“If Scott Amendola didn’t exist\, the San Francisco music scene would have to invent him.” – Derk Richardson\, San Francisco Bay Guardian \n  \nScott Amendola.com\nScott Amendola on Facebook \n  \nAdmission: $12-20. Doors at 7:30 pm.
