SUMMARY:Reuse\, Repurpose\, Reimagine: Interactive Mending Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join us to learn about mending clothes\, bags\, and fabric items\, and even work on your project with guidance and materials from Verda Bursal. You can bring your own item(s) in need of mending and/or work with scrap pieces from Verda’s stash. \nThread and tools will be provided\, including a sewing machine if you’re feeling brave! \nThe workshop will be entirely donation-based. No tickets\, no need to RSVP\, pay what you can for your alteration and/or lesson. \n \nVerda Bursal is the creator of Waste to Hip\, a project dedicated to mending and upcycling fabric goods as well as teaching others how to do the same. She is proud to carry on the millennia-old tradition of turning plant and animal fibers into useful three-dimensional objects\, and firmly believes that most fabric items have more life they can live. \nRead more about her project: https://www.wastetohip.com/ \n  \n	\n\n Waste to Hip by Verda Bursal\n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n Image 1 of 3

This free event invites children\, families\, and community members to dive into the magical world of shadow puppetry. Together\, we will explore the art of storytelling and puppet-making\, culminating in a collaborative shadow theater performance. \nFeaturing: \nJessica Nguyen – Puppeteer\nYa Wen Chien – Puppeteer\nSharon Shao- Puppeteer \n\n\n\nSunday\, February 9th 2025\nTime: 1:00 pm – 3:00 pm \nTHIS IS A FREE EVENT! \n  \n\n\n\n\nABOUT: \nShadowLight Productions was founded in 1972 by filmmaker/theatre director/shadow artist Larry Reed. We have served San Francisco as a nonprofit theater company for nearly 30 years. \nThe mission of ShadowLight Productions is to expose the general public to the art of Shadow Theater. The means of providing such exposure includes but is not limited to live theater\, film\, and other media. We strive to preserve indigenous shadow theater traditions and to explore and expand the possibilities of the shadow theater medium by creating innovative interdisciplinary\, multicultural works. \nFollow us on Facebook and Instagram! \n\nJessica Nguyen (shadow puppeteer/puppet fabricator/storyboard artist) is a science illustrator\, educator\, dancer\, and circus artist turned to the dark side. Her favorite medium is mischief and punnery but she confesses that a bit of paper and ink will always lift the spirits. She currently works and lurks in Alameda\, and loves waxing poetic about flora and fauna and bones and stones over a warm cup of tea. \n \nYa Wen Chien (co-lead designer-scenery and shadow performer) is an illustrator\, painter- trained in Chinese painting and watercolor\, a digital designer\, puppet maker\, and shadow-play artist born in Taiwan and currently lives and works in the San Francisco Bay Area. \n \nSharon Shao (she/her) is a Bay Area native actor and teaching artist. DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are available online. It is advised to purchase advance tickets for this event. If tickets sell out online\, tickets will not be available at the door.  \n\n\n\n\nCollision of classical\, jazz\, EDM\, reggae\, and funk with Live Sound Looping\, Improvisation and Storytelling \nOkCello is inspired by the exploration of African Diasporic melodies and narratives and their intersection with people’s perceptions and assumptions about the classical and European nature of the cello. As well\, his work with improvisation attempts to embody the phenomenon of wordless prayer. \nFeaturing Artists:\nOkorie Johnson – cello \nSaturday\, May 20th\, 2023\nTime: 6:30 pm doors\, 7:00 pm show\nAdmission: (Online) $20-30 / (Door) $35 general \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE ARTIST:  \n\n\nOkorie “OkCello” Johnson is an American cellist-songwriter whose artistry integrates cello performance\, live-sound-looping\, improvisation\, and storytelling – all culminating in original compositions that collide classical with jazz\, EDM\, reggae\, and funk. \nIn 2021\, Okorie OkCello Johnson was selected to be one of the presenters at the Democratic Republic of the Congo Biennale (Scheduled for September 2022) for his proposal of a sound installation project entitled “Vessel of Breath\,” a meditative cello composition comprised of harvested sound\, collaborative compositions\, and community interviews. In addition\, he was selected to participate in the Kennedy Center’s artist residence program entitled Office Hours (scheduled for March 2022)\, in which he will begin workshopping the process for the sound installation project above. 2021 also saw his inclusion in the InStyle February issue\, which identified him as a member of the “Creative Class Making Atlanta the New Epicenter of American Arts.” He was also identified in Atlanta Magazine’s “Atlanta Rising Creative Class [that] Is Gaining New Recognition on the National Scene.” Finally\, a documentary he scored for the Atlanta Journal Constitution\, “Imperfect Alibi” won a regional Emmy\, he released his third studio project Beacon in September of 2021\, and in December\, he released a holiday album entitled\, An OkChristmas. \nIn 2020 Okorie was commissioned by Flux Projects to create improvisational work entitled “Stir Crazy” directly responding to the isolation that stemmed from the COVID19 quarantines. He then collaborated with visual artist Fahamu Pecou and poet Jon Goode to create a performance art piece entitled HUE+MEN that\, in response to the murders of George Floyd\, Ahmaud Arbery and Breonna Taylor\, asserted through sound\, imagery\, and poetry the sanctity and power of Black humanity. He also went on to be selected by Emory University to participate in its inaugural Arts and Social Justice Fellowship program\, created by the Emory Center for Ethics. In that program\, he and 5 other Atlanta artists were commissioned to create in collaboration with Emory professors and their classes pieces of art that spoke to the racial reckoning that the US experienced that summer. \nIn 2019\, he had the honor of performing at SXSW for Choose ATL and the Atlanta Convention and Visitors Bureau\, performing at the Oak Hill Stage of the Atlanta Jazz Festival\, opening for Grammy award winning artist Van Hunt\, being a featured artist on the Story2019 festival at the Schermerhorn Symphony Center in Nashville\, opening for Grammy award winning recording artist Maxwell at the Cadence Bank Amphitheatre at Chastain Park\, and being invited to perform in Havana\, Cuba at the classical music festival Habana Classica\, which coincided with the 500th birthday of that capital city. \nHe is a recipient of the Alliance Theatre’s 2018 Reiser Atlanta Artists Lab grant\, and a 2018 Creative Loafing Readers’ Choice winner for Best Local Jazz Act. His sophomore album Resolve was named one of ArtsATL’s top local albums of 2018. \nFurthermore\, over his career\, Okorie has had the opportunity to perform and/or record with India.Arie\, De La Soul\, and Big Boi of OutKast\, amongst many others. \nhttps://www.okcello.com\nhttps://myriadartists.com/okcello \n\n\n\n \n\n \nEVENT DETAILS\nSaturday\, May 20th\, 2023\nTime: 6:30 pm doors\, 7:00 pm show\nAdmission: (Online) $20-30 / (Door) $35 general \nNote: A limited quantity of additional tickets will be available for purchase at the door unless otherwise noted on the Facebook event page that the show is SOLD OUT. \nPurchase advance tickets for this event \nNote: Purchasing an advance ticket guarantees admission but does not guarantee a seat.
