SUMMARY:AMALGAMATION: A Project about Systems\, Networks and Communities
DESCRIPTION:This project seeks to integrate the residence of artist Ralph Vázquez-Concepción at the Red Poppy Art House\, the Family Arts Program\, local residents and artists as well as invited artists from abroad to participate in a dialogue about what the terms “networks”\, “systems”\, and “community” mean to them. The result will be an installation that will express\, if in a conceptual manner\, the continuum of significance and the way these terms integrate in culture. Everyone has an idea of what the central motifs for this installation are\, and it is that intuitive understanding which will take center stage and become the content of the final collaborative work. \nCost: Free by RVSP at johanna@redpoppyarthouse.org

SUMMARY:Contemporary Landscape Traditions in Japan
DESCRIPTION:Artist Salon linked to photographic exhibit titled Steam and Ice\, by artist Hiroyo Kaneko\, currently on view at the Poppy. \nContemporary Landscape Traditions in Japan \nPlease join us for an evening with Bay Area artist Hiroyo Kaneko in conversation with Lisa Sutcliffe\, assistant curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art . They will be discussing Kaneko’s first solo exhibition at the Red Poppy: Steam and Ice. \n  \nThe exhibition presents two series\, both examining human rituals and  complex relationships to the landscape. In Sentimental Education\, the artist photographed herself and her family relaxing in the hot springs on the outskirts of Tokyo. These intimate photographs\, soft in color and rich in atmosphere\, quietly examine a time-honored ritual of renewal. \n  \nMore recently\, the artist returned to her hometown of Aomori\, in northern Japan to record the everyday activities associated with a harsh winter climate. The third in a series of pictures exploring human rituals associated with seasons\, this work emphasizes her interest in a deep understanding of the complex ways in which we are shaped by nature even as we attempt to control it. \n  \nTracing the thread of landscape photography in Japan\, the discussion will offer a historical context for Kaneko’s work followed by a conversation with the artist. Sutcliffe and Kaneko will discuss various approaches in contemporary Japanese photography\, from the analytic examinations of Naoya Hatakeyama to the more formal explorations of Toshio Shibata and attempt to draw out the themes these artists share.

SUMMARY:SoupSF
DESCRIPTION:Come check out the first ever SoupSF… at the Red Poppy Art House! \nDesigned to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund new and emerging projects\, SoupSF is inspired by successful precursors such as Chicago INCUBATE’s Sunday Soup and Brooklyn’s FEAST. \nThe idea: 1) $15 donation gets you soup and a vote. 2) Three teams present projects to benefit the community. 3) Attendees vote to grant the proceeds from the meal to the most inspiring and promising project. \nMaybe you’re starting a community garden or farmer’s market. Or you’re a muralist with a vision for a decrepit wall. Or maybe you’re building an installation or pop-up art experience. If it makes the community a happier place\, it can get funded ($300-$500) at SOUP SF. \nSubmissions are judged for:\n1) creativity\n2) value to community\n3) ability to execute \nFor more information or to submit a proposal to be one of the projects considered\, please visit:\nhttp://soupsf.org/ \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Volunteer Orientation and Artist Salon\, hosted by the Family Art Program Featuring Jeremy Mintz
DESCRIPTION:  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nSinger Song Writer pursuing his Doctorate in Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Small discussion and Q&A on the Role of music as communal expression after performance. \n  \nAlong with playing strings and providing back-up vocals for the contemporary Afro-Latino group – YeYe – Jeremy also performs a wide array of his own original music and unique covers. With a remarkable ability to absorb and incorporate music from seemingly any source\, Jeremy uses his own voice to tell the story of the places he’s been and the people he’s known. Through his travels in Asia and the Americas\, he has learned to play over a dozen instruments\, which allows him to draw upon an impressively eclectic mix of influences. For this intimate evening\, he will be taking the audience through a retrospective of his life through song. In doing so\, Jeremy hopes to convey the richness of traditional song forms\, presented with a modern sensibility. The evening will also shed light upon the ever-important role music has in bringing forth communal expression. \n  \nInstruments will include: \nguitar\, charango\, sikus/zamponas (panpipes)\, bansuri (Indian flute)\, \nNepali Sarangi\, and South Asian jaw harps

SUMMARY:Occupy Everywhere Tour Returns to SF
DESCRIPTION:As part of the Red Poppy’s Artist Salon series\, on November 9th Rupa & the April Fishes will be joining us with Mona Caron. \nArtist Salons are an intergal part of the Red Poppy Art House’s programming\, offering a casual\, accessible\, and experimental environment for artists and members of the community to share work and develop dialog around creative initiatives as well as social\, cultural and political issues. These bimonthly events began essentially as “Open Studio” nights\, where artists-in-residence at the Red Poppy and other local people of varying backgrounds and disciplines would gather. Artist Salons now take on a range of formats\, including but not limited to: film screenings\, poetry readings\, one night exhibitions\, critique sessions\, workshops\, musical performances\, lectures\, etc. \nWednesday November 9th 7-9pm \nOccupy Everywhere Tour Returns to SF\nRupa & the April Fishes with Mona Caron\nIn October 2011\, SF-based global mashup artists Rupa & the April Fishes together with muralist Mona Caron embarked on one of their most profound tours yet\, playing in places where the global struggle for the end of capitalism and the beginning of another way is felt with striking impact–in Greece and in India\, for kings and beggars\, in castles\, in social centers and in the slums. Strangely timed with the Occupy Wall Street movement which has been spreading around the world\, this group of artists exchanged ideas and artwork with local folks in these faraway places\, strengthening ties through inquiry into and articulation of a common struggle. Please come join them for an informal evening of stories from the road\, a slideshow documenting their experiences of the group and an opportunity to ask questions and share your own thoughts about occupying everywhere. This will be a free and open event with potluck dinner\, so please feel free to bring food to share.\n
