SUMMARY:SoupSF
DESCRIPTION:Come check out the first ever SoupSF… at the Red Poppy Art House! \nDesigned to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund new and emerging projects\, SoupSF is inspired by successful precursors such as Chicago INCUBATE’s Sunday Soup and Brooklyn’s FEAST. \nThe idea: 1) $15 donation gets you soup and a vote. 2) Three teams present projects to benefit the community. 3) Attendees vote to grant the proceeds from the meal to the most inspiring and promising project. \nMaybe you’re starting a community garden or farmer’s market. Or you’re a muralist with a vision for a decrepit wall. Or maybe you’re building an installation or pop-up art experience. If it makes the community a happier place\, it can get funded ($300-$500) at SOUP SF. \nSubmissions are judged for:\n1) creativity\n2) value to community\n3) ability to execute \nFor more information or to submit a proposal to be one of the projects considered\, please visit:\nhttp://soupsf.org/ \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Charming Hostess: An Homage to Radical Diva Adrienne Cooper
DESCRIPTION:Charming Hostess is a music ensemble at the intersection of voice\, text and Diaspora consciousness. Our mission is to make lovely noise about complex ideas. We draw sonically from the sounding body – voices and winds\, handclaps and heartbeats\, sex-breath and silence. Individual voices and experiences come together to create a dialogic\, multi-faceted whole. ChoHo’s music has been curated into the Prague Bienalle and the Museum of Peace in Uzbekistan\, as well as YBCA and the Contemporary Jewish Museum in SF.  Tonight we will be honoring the radical Yiddish hero Adrienne Cooper who passed on last month.  Teacher\, activist\, diva\, inspiration to many\, Adrienne’s work went\, in her words\, “from grit to grace.”  She was serious about music and text\, and she was also funny and fabulous.  We miss her. Tonight we will be honoring her spirit with Jewish music\, traditional and new.  We will be focusing on Jewish music from the Mediterranean\, but we will have some Yiddish ones in there too! \nJewlia Eisenberg-voice\nCynthia Taylor-voice\nJason Ditzian-clarinet\nMichael Pinkham-drums\nand special guests! \n“Charming Hostess makes music like no other… Thrown in with lively North African wedding songs and Eastern European folk songs are originals that display a proudly feminist\, radical-Jewish\, pro-sex sensibility. The blend lets listeners discover whether they can think and dance at the same time.”
- The New York Times \n“Thoroughly delightful…Ethereal melodies shift elegantly with precise rhythmic accompaniment\, and the overall effect encourages an urge to dance and drink vodka.”
- The New Yorker \nwww.charminghostess.us\nhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAppqYyH1PM&feature=related\nhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeQggYwIS0M&feature=related \n$10-$20 admission. Doors at 7:30 pm. Show at 8:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Daniel Masson Presents: George Méliès’ The Impossible Voyage
DESCRIPTION:Known for his musical contribution to the hugely popular compilations of Buddha Bar\, French artist Daniel Masson has made a career of crossing musical and technical boundaries\, establishing himself as one of the names in Electro World-chillout music. As an independent composer\, studio producer and guitarist\, he has generated his own unique style in the electronic scene. \nDuring summer 2011 Masson composed an original electronic score for George Méliès’ 1904 silent film “The Impossible Voyage\,” giving the classic new life in a new location. Presented by the French Embassy and the French Institute of Seoul\, South Korea\, Masson played the new composition live at the Busan International Film Festival this past fall. \nChannelling Méliès’ sense of innovation and experimentation with early cinema\, at the Red Poppy Art House Masson will begin with an electronic “chillout” mix of recent work and afterward provide a rendition of his Méliès “cinemix” with a screening of The Impossible Voyage. This original performance is not be missed! \nExcerpt of the Impossible Voyage:\nhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZvaT5hQeFZ8&feature=youtu.be \nPerformance\nhttp://vimeo.com/31248598\n\nhttp://www.danielmasson.net/ \n$10-$15 admission. SUMMARY:Prasant Radhakrishnan's VidyA: South Indian Classical Meets Jazz
DESCRIPTION:VidyA merges Jazz with the melodic and rhythmic nuance of South Indian Classical (Carnatic) music. Led by critically-acclaimed saxophonist\, Prasant Radhakrishnan along with David Ewell (bass)\, Sameer Gupta (drums) – Hamir Atwal performs as guest drummer at this performance. VidyA has emerged with a soulful\, penetrating sound that pushes the labels of “fusion” or “world music.” \nThese artists have an almost telepathic interplay\, incorporating the forward motion of both Indian Classical and Jazz rhythms while elaborating Carnatic ragas infused with melodic richness. The group weaves in and out of the two genres while all the time merging them into one. VidyA translates the language of Carnatic music into the idiom of Jazz. \nVidyA has been featured at venues such as SFJazz\, San Jose Jazz\, Yoshi’s\, Asian American Film Festival\, Recontraire Internationale in France and more. Radhakrishnan’s original compositions for VidyA have been commissioned by the De Young Museum via the Jazz at Intersection series and awarded the Zellerbach Family Fund grant among others in 2010. VidyA will release their second studio album of original compositions later this year. \nPrasant Radhakrishnan: Saxophone\nDavid Ewell: Bass\nDrums: TBA \n“…Pioneering trans-cultural terrain.” – San Francisco Chronicle \n“VidyA’s music breathes at the very center of a cultural crossroads between the North American jazz idiom and the Carnatic music of South India. VidyA’s music is a new vein of North American music… present tense\, present location\, new culture in the making.” – Todd Brown\, Red Poppy Art House \n“…when these patterns are played on saxophone\, violin\, string bass\, and jazz drums\, there is a build-up of emotional energy and intellectual complexity which seems to recreate the energy that was present at the birth of bebop in 1940s New York. In fact\, if Charlie Parker or Dizzie Gillespie had heard VidyA at that time\, I think it would have never have occurred to them that VidyA’s music was Indian. They would simply have wondered where these cats had found a sound that was so mercilessly free of the standard melodic and rhythmic clichés.” – Teed Rockwell\, India Currents \n“A style that’s madly percussive and sparkling… combines jazz’s sweet dreaminess with the Indian form’s insistent rhythmic and tonal changes.” – SF Weekly \n“Imagine ragas and American blues folded into a single moment. It’s a fusion of Indian classical and jazz\, and the leader\, Prasant Radhakrishnan\, 24\, points the way for a number of Bay Area improvisers.” – San Francisco Chronicle\, “Year in Jazz” (January 2007). \nhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hv9eW47W4A\nhttp://vidyamusic.com\n http://prasantmusic.com\nhttp://music.prasantmusic.com/album/vidya \n$15 admission.  Cash only.\nDoors at 7:30 pm.  Show at 8:00 pm.

DESCRIPTION:This award-winning indie harpist/singer-songwriter has sold out shows from Philadelphia’s Tin Angel to The Matador in Siberia. More Regina Spektor than Joanna Newsom\, Grassie has toured across Europe\, South America\, North America\, and Asia\, playing original Folk songs with pop structure and Jazz sensibilities that have earned her grants from the Thomas J. Watson Foundation and the U.S. State Department\, a slew of awards\, and the fervent support of her fans\, one of whom described her as “an awesome combination of Pippi Longstocking and the Mata Hari. Trust me\, you never saw anything like this.” Expect smart\, accessible songwriting strewn with literary allusions\, an innovative approach to the harp\, understatedly soulful vocals\, and funny stories of her travel (mis)adventures. \nGillian Grassie: harp\, vocals \n“After hearing only one song\, I became an instant Gillian Grassie fan. It’s rare to find a young singer with such control and understated soulfulness\, and even more rare to hear a harp provide such a deep percussive groove. I was immediately captivated by her sound.” – Grammy-award winner Marc Cohn. \nwww.gilliangrassie.com \nDoors at 6:30 pm. Show at 7:00 pm. Cash only.
