SUMMARY:Film Screening: Oh Friend\, This Waiting! Free!
DESCRIPTION:  \nThe Red Poppy Art House will be hosting an affordable film screening the first Sunday of every month. The first film\, O Friend\, This Waiting! features India’s temple courtesans and most cherished love songs. \n  \nABOUT THE FILM \n  \nCould a song be full of love\, and yet banal and trifling? Such were the padams of Kshetrayya. A wandering poet-musician\, Kshetrayya wrote for devadasis\, the dancing courtesans at the courts of the 17th century Nayaka rulers. His padams became the most cherished of her songs of love. O Friend\, This Waiting! reflects on the entwined fortunes of the padams and the women they were written for\, from the 17th to the 20th century\, while dwelling in the performance spaces of temples and courts of the Nayaka period. \n  \nABOUT THE FILMMAKERS \n  \nSandhya Kumar is an independent filmmaker and editor. She has been making documentaries and experimental shorts since 2007. All her films are rooted in the non-fiction\, and inspired by the desire to make visible the poetry of everyday life. Sandhya holds an MFA in Film from San Francisco Art Institute\, and an MA in Mass Communication from Jamia Millia University\, New Delhi. She lives and works in Bangalore. \n  \nJustin McCarthy is a musician and a dancer. As a musician he plays both the piano and the harpsichord. On the piano\, apart from solo recitals\, he has worked with many vocalists and instrumentalists. On the harpsichord\, he has played solo programs as well as duo recitals with harpsichordist Douglas Amrine. As a dancer he teaches and performs Bharatanatyam\, sometimes as a soloist and sometimes in works he has choreographed for his group of dancers. Justin lives and works in New Delhi. \n  \nThe filmmakers will be present for a discussion and Q&A after the film. \n  \nFind out more about the movie on the Facebook page for “Oh Friend\, This Waiting!” \n  \nNo admission. Doors at 5:30pm\, showtime 6:00pm

SUMMARY:Erik Jekabson String-tet
DESCRIPTION:  \nReview of the String-tet’s new CD “Anti-Mass”: Much like a smaller version of the Gil Evans Orchestra with Miles Davis\, Jekabson seamlessly interweaves his string arrangements with the rhythm section to create a kind of harmonic bed over which he and (a) saxophonist can lay down their precise improvisational lines. The results blur the lines between Jazz and Classical in the most pleasing way\,turning fans of either into fans of both. \n  \nErik Jekabson: trumpet\nMike Zilber: sax\nAnthony Blea: violin\nCharith Premawardhana:viola\nJohn Wiitala: bass\nSmith Dobson: drums and vibes \n  \n$10-$15 admission. SUMMARY:John-Carlos Perea Trio\, Live at the Red Poppy Art House
DESCRIPTION:  \nOn Friday\, August 9th the John-Carlos Perea Trio will perform works in progress from Perea’s forthcoming winter 2013 CD release “Creation Story” at the Red Poppy Art House in San Francisco\, CA. Musically\, the ensemble explores the intersections between American Indian\, jazz\, and improvised musics. This performance marks the first time that these musicians will perform collectively in a trio format. The group features John-Carlos Perea (electric bass\, Native American flute\, voice)\, Jimmy Biala (drums\, percussion\, voice)\, and Karl Evangelista (electric guitar). \n  \nTICKET INFORMATION: \n  \nThis performance is free to the public. However\, in order to respect space considerations at the venue\, attendees are strongly encouraged to RSVP and obtain free tickets through brownpapertickets.com. \n  \nBIOGRAPHIES: \n  \nGRAMMY award winner John-Carlos Perea (Mescalero Apache\, Irish\, German\, Chicano) maintains an active career as a performer and recording artist in San Francisco’s Jazz and World music scenes. First Dance (Aerep Music\, 2001)\, his debut recording as a leader\, featured Perea’s original musical compositions and performances on electric bass\, Native American flute\, and pow-wow singing. Thom Jurek noted that First Dance “feels like the late Jim Pepper’s Comin’ and Goin'” (allmusic.com). In addition to his musical activities\, Perea holds a PhD in Music from UC Berkeley (2009) and serves as an assistant professor in the Department of American Indian Studies\, College of Ethnic Studies\, at San Francisco State University. More about him at johncarlosperea.com. \n  \nPercussionist Jimmy Biala is a long time collaborator with John-Carlos Perea. They have performed and recorded together in many diverse settings\, including the Asian American Jazz Festivals in San Francisco and Chicago\, concerts at the historical Paramount Theater in Oakland\, and the Villa Montalvo Center for the Arts in Saratoga\, California. As a professional educator\, Jimmy leads workshops on American Jazz\, Cuban and Brazilian percussion across North America\, Europe\, and Asia. \n  \nGuitarist Karl Evangelista ranks among a new wave of creative musicians grounded in jazz\, 20th century experimentalism\, popular song\, and the exploration of the place of multiculturalism and ethnic co-existence in an increasingly post-cultural\, trans-idiomatic cultural space. As the creative force behind boundary breaking group Grex\, Evangelista has been called “essential current-and-future listening\, his music “a near-seamless blend of modern jazz\, contemporary structuralist composition\, indie rock\, and blues rock” (Tiny Mix Tapes). Via Asian Improv aRts\, Evangelista was awarded a 2011 Zellerbach Grant for the composition of Taglish\, a suite centered on Filipino-American culture; an album of the composition was successfully funded via Kickstarter and released in late 2012. Evangelista holds a BA in Interdisciplinary Studies from UC Berkeley (2006) and an MFA in Improvised Music from Mills College (2009). \n  \nShow is free.  RSVP and tickets available at brownpapertickets.com  Doors at 7:00 pm\, show at 7:30 pm. \n  \n

Together with her ensemble\, Ramya creates an immersive musical language where traditions\, improvisation\, poetry\, and lived human emotion meet. \n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n	\n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n\n \n	\n [Show thumbnails]\n	\n\n\n \n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nArtist Links\n \nWebsites: https://www.facebook.com/ramyashankarInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/ramyashankarmusic/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/ramyashankarYouTube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D9y4Mod3XSM\n \n \nEVENT DETAILS\nSaturday October 17\, 2026Time: 7:00 pm doors\, 7:30 pm showAdmission: (Online) $25 Students & Seniors – $29 Early Bird – $35 General / $40 Door \nNote: A limited quantity of additional tickets will be available for purchase at the door unless otherwise noted on the Facebook event page that the show is SOLD OUT. \nPurchase advance tickets for this event \nNote: Purchasing an advance ticket guarantees admission but does not guarantee a seat.
