DESCRIPTION:Advance tickets are available online for both shows. It is advised to purchase advance tickets for this event. If tickets sell out online\, tickets will not be available at the door. \nFreedom Sounds for the Liberated \nThis music is celebratory\, exultant\, joyous\, urgent. In the moment compositions\, as rarefied as air or the thoughts of those in communion with spirits up above. Listen to your life reflected in color frequency vibrations\, low end theoretics and multi-directional polyrhythms. \nFEATURING: \nSameer Gupta – Drumset\, Tabla\nDavid Boyce – Sax\, Bass Clarinet\nDavid Ewell – Acoustic Bass\nRichard Howell – Sax\, Percussion\, Woodwinds \n\n\n\n\n\nABOUT THE PROJECT: \nFeaturing talented and experienced Bay Area improvisers (David Boyce\, Richard Howell\, David Ewell and Sameer Gupta) impressively\, everything in the music is uncharted each time The Supplicants perform. They preconceive nothing\, except their collective approach to making music. The music of The Supplicants is entirely accessible and rhythmically swinging. Although the ensemble does not have a designated leader\, their musical explorations\, passing from one musician to another and through the entire ensemble\, develop ideas collectively and are expressed through group interplay\, rather than only in the lead instrument. \nPreview the music:  \n \nLearn more: Website | YouTube  \n  \nCOVID-19 PRECAUTIONS\n\nWe are requiring proof of full vaccination and a photo ID at the door. First Dance (Aerep Music\, 2001)\, his debut recording as a leader\, featured Perea’s original musical compositions and performances on electric bass\, Native American flute\, and pow-wow singing. SUMMARY:St. Tropez + Yesway
DESCRIPTION:Eclectic Indie Rock \n  \nSt .Tropez is an eclectic indie rock band based in Oakland\, California. Band members Sanjay Vora (vocals\, guitar\, keys)\, Akiyoshi Ehara (bass\, also of The Seshen)\, Jeremy Fisch (drums) and special guest member Lalin St. Juste (vocals\, also of the Seshen) make music that explores memories and the simultaneous joy and melancholy we experience contemplating passing moments which are gone forever. \n  \nSt. Tropez on Facebook\nListen to St. Tropez on Soundcloud \n \nYesway has been called a “floating\, flowing faucet of magical unification” and “the hottest new supergroup in San Francisco”. Supergroup isn’t often a term used to describe duos\, but in this case it works. Live\, their voices literally melt together and their performances are intimate yet expansive. The budding project is a collaboration between best friends\, Kacey Johansing and Emily Ritz. \n  \nThe two have been involved in the Bay Area music scene for years. Kacey\, other than having quite the solo career has lent her talents to projects such as Geographer and The Blank Tapes while Emily is a part of the bands Devotionals and DRMS. Three years ago\, the two began playing music together in the experimental folk ensemble Honeycomb and have since grown and woven their creative song writing and soulful expression into a power duo. Live and in recordings they are often backed by Vibraphone man about town\, Andrew Maguire who also plays with Will Sprott and Thao and Mirah. Yesway is an exquisite illustration of a rare and powerful connection shared by two potent songwriters. \n  \nYesway on Facebook \n  \n$10-$15 admission. Doors at 7:30 pm. Show at 8:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Shifting Margins - October Exhibition at the Poppy
DESCRIPTION:September 27 – November 10 \n  \nCuratorial Discussion: November 7 @ 6:00 pm \n  \nShifting Margins is a two-part exhibition curated by Bay Area curatorial organization OFF- Space running concurrently at The Red Poppy Art House and Aggregate Space in West Oakland. This two-part group exhibition brings together a variety of works that inspire deliberation\, consideration and argument in order to grapple with the location\, meaning and use of the edge\, outsider-ness\, privilege and what it means to be “on the margin” whether by choice or by force of circumstance. Shifting Margins will embrace the center\, the periphery and the bridge between those concepts through the use of two locations “The City” (San Francisco) the perceived cultural and social center and its “marginal” sister city (Oakland) noted center of racial and social upheaval.

SUMMARY:Janam: Transcendent Balkan & Near Eastern Blend
DESCRIPTION:  \nJanam (“my soul”) creates a compelling mix of Balkan\, Turkish\, Sephardic and American Roots music & originals. Led by golden throated Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble veteran Juliana Graffagna\, Janam proves that the foothills of the Balkans and the Appalachians lie in Oakland. Janam’s funky meters\, bittersweet modes\, driving tunes\, and sultry ballads invoke the nightingales and dark eyes\, the hot love and cold hollows of Europe and America’s most musical mountains. Janam unites the Bay Area’s most imaginative and devoted practitioners of Balkan & Near Eastern music\, to follow the universal threads of folk songs of disparate traditions. The resulting music is transcendent\, sensuous and irresistible.\nJuliana Graffagna: vocals\, percussion\nDan Auvil: percussion\, vocals\nTom Farris: laouto\, guitar\, accordion\nGari Hegedus: violin\, oud\, saz\, mandocello\nPeter Jaques: clarinet\, ney\, vocals\n“An innovative ensemble that explores a dizzying range of styles\, from Appalachia and Asia Minor to Eastern Europe. The quintet plays swirling\, hard-driving music that always seems to end up in unexpected places.” – San Francisco Chronicle \n  \n“This fine group goes on a world tour of Eastern Europe…with no cultural jet lag.” -Santa Barbara Independent \n  \n“They’re a band to watch\, with some sterling musicianship and a real sense of fervour about them.” – Sing Out!\nhttp://www.janamband.com \n  \nhttp://www.facebook.com/janamband \n  \nhttp://cdbaby.com/cd/janam \n  \nhttp://soundcloud.com/peterjaques/janam-poulaki-xeno \n  \nhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yTSC7BENkME&feature=channel&list=UL \n  \nDoors at 7:30 pm.
