SUMMARY:Janam: Transcendent Balkan & Near Eastern Blend
DESCRIPTION:  \nJanam (“my soul”) creates a compelling mix of Balkan\, Turkish\, Sephardic and American Roots music & originals. Led by golden throated Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble veteran Juliana Graffagna\, Janam proves that the foothills of the Balkans and the Appalachians lie in Oakland. Janam’s funky meters\, bittersweet modes\, driving tunes\, and sultry ballads invoke the nightingales and dark eyes\, the hot love and cold hollows of Europe and America’s most musical mountains. Janam unites the Bay Area’s most imaginative and devoted practitioners of Balkan & Near Eastern music\, to follow the universal threads of folk songs of disparate traditions. The resulting music is transcendent\, sensuous and irresistible.\nJuliana Graffagna: vocals\, percussion\nDan Auvil: percussion\, vocals\nTom Farris: laouto\, guitar\, accordion\nGari Hegedus: violin\, oud\, saz\, mandocello\nPeter Jaques: clarinet\, ney\, vocals\n“An innovative ensemble that explores a dizzying range of styles\, from Appalachia and Asia Minor to Eastern Europe. SUMMARY:Devin Ray Hoff
DESCRIPTION:  \nFolkvangr And Broken Shadows \n  \nDevin Hoff is a bassist and composer who has written music for and played in Punk\, Jazz and Country ensembles throughout the Americas\, Europe\, Asia and composed and played on hundreds of records\, film and stage scores. Tonight he presents his two main creative acoustic music projects: Folkvangr and Broken Shadows. \n  \nFolkvangr is a one-man band of acoustic bass and voice\, focusing on repertoire of the Folk music Hoff grew up on in Kansas and Colorado and the roots of that music in European peasant songs\, synthesizing these strains by amplifying the shared instinct of rebellion and freedom that underlies much of this music. \n  \nBroken Shadows is a new band\, built on old friendships\, marching proudly in the tradition of the pioneers of “free jazz”. In keeping with this spirit\, the music and concepts are original (penned by Hoff) and strive to push the principle of liberation through music always one step further.\nDevin Ray Hoff: acoustic bass\, voice\nHoward Wiley: tenor saxophone\nNick Mazzarella: alto saxophone\nDarrell Green: drums\nDevin Hoff: bass \n  \nhttp://devinhoff.tumblr.com/ \n  \n$5 admission. SUMMARY:Shifting Margins - October Exhibition at the Poppy
DESCRIPTION:September 27 – November 10 \n  \nCuratorial Discussion: November 7 @ 6:00 pm \n  \nShifting Margins is a two-part exhibition curated by Bay Area curatorial organization OFF- Space running concurrently at The Red Poppy Art House and Aggregate Space in West Oakland. This two-part group exhibition brings together a variety of works that inspire deliberation\, consideration and argument in order to grapple with the location\, meaning and use of the edge\, outsider-ness\, privilege and what it means to be “on the margin” whether by choice or by force of circumstance. Shifting Margins will embrace the center\, the periphery and the bridge between those concepts through the use of two locations “The City” (San Francisco) the perceived cultural and social center and its “marginal” sister city (Oakland) noted center of racial and social upheaval.
