Blum, Johnston, and Glenn: 21st Century Chamber Jazz
March 4, 2017 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
$15 – $20Influenced by the contemporary and free jazz canons, the classical avant-garde, and beyond, this Bay Area trio will explore the boundaries between jazz and their own highly refined and individualized forms of expression. Each member of the trio has built a diverse and prolific musical life in the Bay Area, and in this new ensemble they will delve into probing the extremes of music: the ambient and the wild, the minimal and the expressive, the consonant and discordant, and everything in between.
Featuring:
Steve Blum – piano
Darren Johnston – trumpet
Jordan Glenn – drums
Steve Blum, a versatile pianist, composer, improviser, and music director, has studied and performed with artists such as Charlie Haden, Wadada Leo Smith, Joe LaBarbera, Vinny Golia, and Tony Clifton. He plays with several Bay Area bands, including the Dirty Snacks Ensemble, the Electric Squeezebox Orchestra, Disappear Incompletely, Junior Reggae, Aram Shelton’s Marches, and Bells Atlas. Blum released his most recent effort, Keyboarchestra Vol. 2: Martian Moon Music and 35 Other Short Pieces, in 2016.
