Global jazz and Mediterranean future-folk

Drawing on her unique Adriatic heritage as well as her command of Brazilian music and jazz, Croatian vocalist Astrid Kuljanic will present a diverse evening of global music. With her critically acclaimed band featuring accordionist Ben Rosenblum and bassist Mat Muntz, Astrid will sing traditional, popular, and original songs in a range of styles and languages propelled by a focus on spontaneous interaction and interpretive flexibility. The group will also be presenting new material from Astrid’s 2023 Performance Plus project supported by Chamber Music America.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS: 

Astrid Kuljanic is a Croatian vocalist based in the Bay Area. Drawing on musical traditions from Eastern Europe to Brazil and the United States, she cultivates a global sound informed by her subtle interpretive skill.

Since moving to the US, Astrid has performed as a leader at Weill Hall (where she celebrated the release of her 2017 album Riva with a sold-out concert), the Kennedy Center, and legendary jazz venues like The Jazz Gallery and The Jazz Standard. An active collaborator, she contributed to the 2020 Grammy-nominated album ONA by Thana Alexa.

Recently, Astrid received awards from the Brooklyn Arts Council (2020) and NYC Artist Corps (2021) for her project Why Are You Gone?, a concert investigating the experience of Eastern European immigrants in Brooklyn through the lens of traditional music alongside new compositions.

Astrid holds degrees from the University of Zagreb, Croatia in chemical engineering, a B.M. from the Conservatory G. Tartini, Trieste, Italy, and an M.M. in Jazz Performance from the Manhattan School of Music.
