ANDREA WOLPER / HAFEZ MODIRZADEH AND FRIENDS
September 27, 2012 @ 6:30 pm - 9:00 pm
$12 – $15
“An audacious artist [with] an inventive, thrilling, appealing musical vision,” New York singer and songwriter Andrea Wolper celebrates her recent CD release, “Parallel Lives,” with her first appearance at Red Poppy. Mixing genres, crossing boundaries, as at home with the Great American songbook as she is with spontaneous improvisations, she presents her intriguing arrangements of everything from Pop to poetry. Andrea approaches everything she sings with an irrepressible spirit and an open heart. Acclaimed Bay Area saxophonist Hafez Modirzadeh will open with a short set, then join Andrea’s group for some East-West musical explorations that will run the gamut from light-hearted and humorous to thought provoking and moving.
Andrea Wolper: voice
Ken Fiiano: acoustic bass
Dave MacNab: guitar
Hafez Modirzadeh: saxophone, flutes
Drummer: Vijay Anderson
“Still not as well-known as she should be, Wolper is a singer who brings songs to life, whatever their source, working in a milieu that begins with Jazz and reaches out to embrace an expressive area uniquely her own.” – Don Heckman, International Review of Music
“A superb singer. . . a highly original performer with a sultry, late-night sound.” – Andrew Gilbert, Contra Costa Times
“Each selection has a life of its own that can exist only through the honesty of Wolper’s expression. . . [she] delivers each sound-world with total artistic commitment.” Francis Lo Kee, NYC Jazz Record
“Andrea Wolper just mesmerizes . . . more than a giant singer she’s an actress to reckon with.” Dan Singer, In Tune International
