Pezhham Akhavass & Navid Kandelousi: Persian Classical Duet(TWO SHOWS)

This collaboration between two world-class musicians from Iran brings their lifetime experience in music and art through their heart and friendship. Pezhham Akhavass and Navid Kandelousi will create moments and flow of traditional, folk, and modern Persian music rooted in radif—a collection of Iranian melodies in the modal system—and poetry based on circle rhythmic patterns.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Pezhham Akhavass is a world-class percussionist and modern-day virtuoso of Persian percussive instruments tombak and daf. His studies in youth music theory and tombak began at the age of five, and with the support of his father, he studied tombak with Naser Farhang Far and Saeid Roudbary. Akhavass worked professionally in his 20s with the renowned Persian vocalist Shahram Nazeri from 2000-2007. He has since recorded and performed with many master world-class musicians such as Hossein Alizadeh, Aliakbar Moradi, and cellist Yo-Yo Ma. In addition to tombak and daf, Akhavass is knowledgeable about Persian instruments setar, tambour, and oud, and has studied Indian tabla under the guidance of Ostad Zakir Hussain. Currently residing in San Francisco, he works on different productions and projects, teaches private lessons, and gives lectures and demonstrations in Persian music and performances.

Navid Kandelousi began studying music on the violin at the age of six. He studied Western classical music in Italy (Verdi Conservatory) and Moscow. Since 1999, he has performed as a soloist in the Iranian National Orchestra and has been invited as an international violinist in many symphonies around Europe. Kandelousi has played the main violin repertoire of Paganini, Beethoven, Sibelius, Mozart, and Tchaikovsky. A winner of several violin competitions and music awards in Iran, he has also performed in numerous concerts at Carnegie Hall (New York City) as the first violin with GateWay Symphony, Kennedy Center with maestro Yo-Yo Ma, as well as Walt Disney Concert Hall.
