Led by drummer Brian Andres, The Afro-Cuban Jazz Cartel was formed in 2007 with its roots in Latin jazz, a tradition which has thrived historically in the San Francisco Bay Area. Over the past decade, the Cartel has earned a sterling reputation as a turbo-charged vehicle for interpreting challenging material with confidence, poise, and rhythmic imagination. Their latest recording, This Could Be That, includes compositions and arrangements by top-shelf writing talent from within and outside the band’s rank. Featuring a core octet comprised of prominent local players, the album includes guest appearances by Cuban-American vocalist Venissa Santi, Fania All-Stars timbalero Louie Romero, bata master Michael Spiro, Peruvian percussionist Alex Acuña, and percussion maestro John Santos.
Sandra Garcia Rivera has captured audiences throughout the U.S., Caribbean, and Europe as a spoken word poet, vocalist and percussionist. She has published two chapbooks, Divination of the Mistress and Shoulder High, and her work has been printed in numerous anthologies and journals. As a vocalist, she has performed and recorded with international Latin jazz and Caribbean roots music artists and ensembles in NY, Puerto Rico, and the Bay Area. Sandra is currently Host & Curator of Lunada Literary Lounge, a monthly literary series at Galeria de la Raza, and is a teaching artist of creative writing and performance with WritersCorps and SFJAZZ Center in San Francisco.
