SUMMARY:Duo Moldova & Mahala: An Evening of Moldavian & Romanian Lautari Music
DESCRIPTION:Moldavian and Romanian traditional music is known for swift\, complex rhythms\, musical improvisation\, and rich melodic ornamentation. Traditionally performed by Romani musicians\, the Lautari musical style encompasses soul-wrenching ballads\, high-energy wedding dances\, and village-style tunes. Hailing straight from the source and having been steeped in this tradition from birth\, Duo Moldova passionately embodies these traditions\, transporting the audience back to the weddings and the summer nights on the porches where the duo grew up. Opening the evening and making its world debut is new San Francisco-based group Mahala with special guest guitarist Alex Hand.\n \nFEATURING:\nDuo Moldova\nSergei – accordion\nValera – violin \nMahala\nAndrew Cohen – accordion\nBalder ten Cate – cimbalom\nMarika Dvorak – violin\nTravis Hendrix – upright bass\nAlex Hand – guitar\n \nABOUT THE ARTISTS:\nDuo Moldova performs traditional Lautari music from Moldova\, Romania\, and beyond. Raised in Chisinau\, Moldova\, accordionist Sergei and violinist Valera are some of the best musicians in this tradition. \nMahala is a new collaborative project bringing together some of the finest musicians from the local Bay Area Balkan music scene. The group performs both traditional as well as original music in the Romanian and Moldavian Lautari style. \n  \n \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: 7:00pm doors / 7:30pm show\nAdmission: $20-25 sliding scale.
