DESCRIPTION:A native New Yorker of Indian origin fluent in Spanish\, Portuguese\, and French\, acclaimed composer/jazz vocalist Kavita Shah incorporates her ethnographic research on Brazilian\, West African\, and Indian musical traditions into her original repertoire. At her first Red Poppy show since 2014\, expect to hear songs from her discography\, as well as selections from her upcoming album of duets with bassist François Moutin. \nFeaturing:\nKavita Shah – vocals\nJulian Shore – piano\nFrançois Moutin – bass\nFerenc Nemeth – drums \nHailed by NPR for possessing an “amazing dexterity for musical languages\,” Kavita Shah makes work in deep engagement with the jazz idiom while addressing and advancing its global sensibilities. She has sung her music at notable festivals and concert halls throughout North America\, Europe\, and Australia\, and she has worked with such artists as Lionel Loueke\, François Moutin\, Sheila Jordan\, Martial Solal\, Greg Osby\, Steve Wilson\, and Yacouba Sissoko. Named by DownBeat as Best Graduate Jazz Vocalist (2012)\, and recipient of ASCAP’s Young Jazz Composers Award (2013)\, Shah holds a master’s in jazz voice from Manhattan School of Music and a bachelor’s in Latin American studies from Harvard. Her album Visions\, co-produced by guitar virtuoso Lionel Loueke (Herbie Hancock\, Dave Holland)\, was dubbed a “sparkling debut” (Boston Globe)\, “daring and ambitious” (Jazzwise)\, and Best Vocal & Debut Album of 2014 (Will Hermes\, Rolling Stone).
