SUMMARY:Molly Holm and Her Trio: Extended Jazz & Improvised Music
DESCRIPTION:Vocalist/composer Molly Holm\, with her all-star jazz trio\, makes her Red Poppy debut exploring the multicultural crossroads of improvised music through original compositions\, straight-ahead and modal jazz tunes\, and traditional folk songs. Molly’s music\, often intertwined with the elements of North Indian raga\, experimental vocals\, or playful free-form improvisation\, also reveals the rhythmic and note-bending influences inherited from the music of the African diaspora. \nFeaturing:\nFrank Martin – piano/arrangements\nJeff Chambers – bass\nDeszon Claiborne – drums \nMolly Holm is an unconventional singer/composer who blends jazz\, improvisation\, and North Indian raga\, reflecting her studies with master vocalist Pandit Pran Nath. Singing with Bobby McFerrin’s original Voicestra\, Molly has also performed with composer Terry Riley\, tabla virtuoso Zakir Hussain\, choreographer June Watanabe\, and George Coates Performance Works. Other projects include collaborations with African-American roots-music vocalist Linda Tillery and Indo-fusion saxophonist George Brooks. Molly has also composed music for Marcus Gardley’s plays\, most notably “This World in a Woman’s Hands.” Her 2013 CD\, Permission\, described as “musically left-leaning\,” was produced by pianist/arranger Frank Martin and features Famoudou Don Moye\, Jeff Chambers\, Larry Schneider\, Deszon Claiborne\, and Wayne Wallace. \nLearn more: Website\n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: Doors 7:00PM / Show 7:30PM\nAdmission: $20-25 sliding scale\nTickets will not be sold in advance for this event – please arrive at the Red Poppy when doors open to purchase tickets.
