DESCRIPTION:The Poppy invites you to join the artist and curators behind its second exhibition of 2017\, Spectrums & Prisms\, Bodies & Realms\, on view until June 24. For her first exhibition at the Red Poppy Art House\, Lise Silva Gomes has created a fiber art installation that serves as a metaphysical exploration where woven knots of various shapes and colors invade the Red Poppy’s performative space\, creating an ambiance of other-worldliness that evokes wonder\, deep mystery\, possibility\, fantasy\, and curiosity. \nABOUT THE ARTIST:\nLise Silva lives in Oakland and works from her studio in Berkeley. Her artistic practice is strongly influenced by meditation\, mysticism\, classic film\, psychedelic illustration\, Surrealism\, and Art Deco design. She explores the power of symbols through her Sacred Knots line of fiber jewelry and wall hangings. \nABOUT THE CURATORS:\nMusician\, composer\, and visual artist Zena Carlota is the executive artistic director of the Red Poppy; Elena Mencarelli\, a visual artist\, is currently collaborating with the Poppy as a lead host and art curator. DESCRIPTION:Kristine Barrett presents an evening of experimental folk melodies exploring the concept of refuge: a place that nurtures\, extends\, bridges; that asks us to appeal to our highest selves\, to seek deeply the difficult questions and to be brave in the face of them. Her setlist: traditional music and ritual song from Norway\, Iran\, Estonia\, Ireland\, Sephardic Spain\, Hungary\, Brazil\, and the Republic of Georgia. \nFeaturing:\nKristine Barrett – vocals\, harmonium\, piano\nDavid Robert Johnson – guitar\nTemple of Light Georgian Community Choir – vocals \nKristine Barrett is a transmedia artist\, composer\, and vocalist specializing in traditional music and ritual song from the Republic of Georgia\, the Caucasus\, Scandinavia\, the Baltics\, Eastern Europe\, Ireland\, and the Americas. Balanced between conservation and experimentation\, Barrett acts as both monk and medium\, honoring tradition while concurrently allowing the music to be alive in present bodies\, reflecting the shape of the living.
