SUMMARY:Barrio Manouche & Mallar Bhattacharya Band: A Musical Journey from India to Spain
DESCRIPTION:The Red Poppy is proud to present an evening with Spanish guitarist/composer Javier Jimenez’s Barrio Manouche\, purveyors of original\, instrumental jazz manouche\, and the Mallar Bhattacharya Band\, a Bay Area-based traditional North Indian ensemble. Each band will perform a set and then play together\, merging both cultures to become one. \nFeaturing:\nJavier Jiménez – guitar\nAlex Zelnick – guitar\nLuis Jiménez – cajón\nMagali Sans-Cartier – violin\nCyril Guiraud – soprano saxophone\nSascha Jacobsen – bass\nMarcos Rodrigues – percussion \nMallar Bhattacharya – sarode\nNilan Chaudhuri – tablas\nSatish Pillai – guitar\, piano\n \nAcoustic\, San Francisco-based international septet Barrio Manouche is deeply influenced by a range of musical traditions\, from the swing of Louis Armstrong and Sidney Bechet and the hot jazz of Django Reinhardt and Stéphane Grappelli to the flamenco of Paco de Lucía and the avant-garde sounds of Miles Davis\, Ornette Coleman\, and John Coltrane.  \nMallar Bhattacharya\, a disciple of sarode legend Aashish Khan of the Senia Maihar Gharan\, plays the sarode\, a 25-stringed lute that is a major instrument of the North Indian classical style of solo performance. Mallar teaches and performs in the Bay Area and\, in recent years\, has been drawn to the sounds and rhythms of global music\, including collaborations with guitarist/pianist Satish Pillai and percussionist Nilan Chaudhuri.\n  \n \n  \nEVENT DETAILS\n \nTime: Doors 7:00PM / Show 7:30PM\nAdmission: $15-20 sliding scale\nTickets will not be sold in advance for this event – please arrive at the Red Poppy when doors open to purchase tickets.
