SUMMARY:Abbos Kosimov & Sirojiddin Juraev: Instrumental Masterworks of Tajikistan and Uzbekistan
DESCRIPTION:Master percussionist Abbos Kosimov is joined by dutar and tanbur virtuoso Sirojiddin Juraev for a rare performance of instrumental masterworks of folk and classic traditions. Spanning musical geographies from the remote mountain highlands of Tajikistan\, to the ancient urban centers of Bukhara and Samarkand in Uzbekistan\, this special evening will highlight the musicians’ technical mastery and innovative virtuosity in the rhythms of timeless Central Asian music. \nFeaturing:\nAbbos Kosimov – doira drum\nSirojiddin Juraev – dutar\, tanbur \nAbbos Kosimov is widely acknowledged as an international percussion phenomenon\, particularly for his many innovative techniques of the Uzbek doira\, an ancient frame drum. Having recognized his percussive talents at a young age\, he studied under doira masters Mamurjon Vahbov\, Tuychi Inogomov\, and the Brothers Islamov. Abbos went on to establish his own school of doira playing in Uzbekistan and later taught at the Tashkent State Institute of Culture. Among his many accolades\, he was given the prestigious title of Honored Artist of Uzbekistan by the country’s president in 2001. Currently residing in Sacramento\, CA\, Abbos continues to tour and explore the boundaries of tradition and innovation in rhythmic cross-cultural collaborations worldwide. \nA prominent virtuoso of the dutar and tanbur (traditional stringed instruments)\, Sirojiddin Juraev is considered among the top masters of both the folk and classic tradition of shashmaqom. He comes from a lineage of dutar players in his native region of northern Tajikistan. In addition to performing at many prestigious concert halls\, he has participated in various cross-cultural collaborations with other world-class masters of traditional music including Wu Man\, Humayoun Sakhi\, Mukhtar Muborakqadamov\, Abduvali Abdurashidov\, and Abbos Kosimov. Sirojiddin is currently an artist-in-residence in Harvard University’s music department where he teaches dutar and tanbur performance. \n\nAdmission: $15-20. Doors at 7:00pm. Show at 7:30pm.
