SUMMARY:Flying Under the Radar Presents: Ian Faquini ft. Sandy Cressman & Colin Hogan
DESCRIPTION:The Red Poppy Art House and Flying Under the Radar join together for a three-night co-production of artists from Brazil and the U.S.\, featuring Ian Faquini ft. Sandy Cressman & Colin Hogan (Thurs 1/7)\, Brazil Beat (Fri 1/8)\, and Ricardo Peixoto Quartet (Sat 1/9). \nIan Faquini is a Brazilian guitarist and singer who resides in Berkeley\, California. At the age of 15\, Ian became the mentoree of the legendary Brazilian guitar maestro Guinga. In a short amount of time\, Ian had become one of the most respected and exceptional guitar players in the San Francisco Bay Area\, demonstrating rare chordal technique and a special delicate touch on very difficult pieces. His last few summers have been spent in Brazil\, where he performed and studied with some of the country’s highest-level guitar players\, including Marcus Tardelli\, Guinga\, and others. Ian recently joined the faculty at California Brazil Camp\, is currently completing a degree at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley\, and has just released a new album of all original compositions with flutist Rebecca Kleinmann. Ian plays and sings originals\, as well as a large repertoire of sambas\, choros\, bossa novas\, and Brazilian classical guitar pieces. \nBorn in New York City and based in the SF Bay Area\, vocalist/composer Sandy Cressman began her career recording and performing with the vocal jazz group Pastiche before focusing on her passion for Brazilian jazz. She has toured the US\, Europe and Brazil performing with her group Homenagem Brasileira and collaborating with other Brazilian musicians and Brazilian music specialists. Most recently\, Sandy appeared as a special guest of SpokFrevo Orquestra on the Main Stage of Carnaval 2015 in Recife\, Brazil. She released two CDs of Brazilian jazz and will be releasing her third\, Entre Amigos\, in 2016. \nCurrently residing in Oakland\, CA\, Colin Hogan was a member of the world-renowned Berkeley High School Jazz Ensemble while also studying with the jazz school’s founder\, Susan Muscarella. He then attended Cal State East Bay (Hayward) where he earned a BA in piano performance. Colin has performed on five continents and has performed with many legendary jazz musicians including James Moody\, Peter Erskine\, Bob Brookmeyer\, Roy Ayers\, and Maria Schneider. In 2004\, he performed with electric bass revolutionary Larry Graham of Sly and the Family Stone at the California Music Awards. Colin is currently involved in many projects including The Tommy Igoe Groove Conspiracy\, Dynamic\, The Jazz Mafia\, Trio Zincalo and The Hogan Brothers with brothers Steve and Julian.\n \nFeaturing:\nIan Faquini – guitar\nSandy Cressman – vocals\nColin Hogan – accordion\n \nAbout Flying Under the Radar:\nLeading up to Flying Under the Radar’s 2017 Biennial Festival of the Arts\, FUTR is partnering with local SF/Bay Area organizations to present a vibrant and eclectic range of artists producing work across disciplines and aesthetics\, as well as to broaden and deepen relationships across artistic communities. \nThe first Flying Under the Radar Biennial will debut in San Francisco\, California over five days in April 2017. A second edition\, in 2019\, will occur in Rio de Janeiro. The event will feature thirty emerging or career artists with limited or no exposure outside their home countries. Participating artists will be from the metropolitan areas of Rio de Janeiro and San Francisco/Bay Area\, and will be known for working in the areas of Film and Video\, Music\, Dance and Performance\, Poetry\, and Visual Arts. \n \n\nAdmission: $15-20. Doors at 7:00pm. Show at 7:30pm. All ages welcome. \nTickets will not be sold in advance for this event.
