SUMMARY:The Supplicants: Songs of the Universe and Void
DESCRIPTION:The Supplicants believe wholeheartedly in the metaphysical spiritual qualities of music. Their music reflects the continuum of this music from a global orientation\, embracing the tones and textures of Africa\, India\, the Caribbean and Eastern Europe. It is a music that’s firmly rooted in the past while pointing to the future using the moments of now to express what is truly happening. This is where jazz and the people of earth are headed. The only question is are you ready to go? \nThe Supplicants is: \nDavid Boyce – sax\nSameer Gupta – drums\nDavid Ewell – bass\nSameer Gupta is known as one of the few percussionists simultaneously representing the traditions of American jazz on drumset\, and Indian classical music on tabla. He has held workshops on Indian music and cross over drumming styles\, at Carnegie Hall Global Encounters\, The Jazzschool in Berkeley and Berklee College of Music in Boston. By combining traditional and modern improvisational styles drawing from his Indian heritage and American roots\, Sameer has already established himself as an original musical voice in jazz\, world\, and fusion music. From bebop to avant-garde jazz\, and European classical percussion to North Indian classical tabla\, Gupta continues to compose and perform music from a true multi-cultural perspective that now bridges several continents. \n“The Supplicants has left me radiant\, fulfilled in the way only the most profound spiritual encounters can. Composed of some of the Bay Area’s most accomplished jazz musicians…the band soars with the fiery grace of A Love Supreme-era Coltrane.” – Jonathan Zwickel\, SF Bay Guardian  \n“The level of emotion with which they play is so deep\, so personal\, and the energy so pure that it is almost as if existence\, or being itself\, creeps most surprisingly yet receptively into our souls.” —Drew Foxman\, All About Jazz \nLearn more about Sameer here. \nAdmission: $15-20. Doors at 7:00pm. Show at 7:30pm. All ages welcome.\nTickets will not be sold in advance for this event. Please arrive at the Red Poppy when doors open to purchase tickets. \nJoin the conversation at the Poppy – volunteer with us! Click here.
