The Medea Cycle
Imagine Fiona Apple and Sting wrote a rock opera based on ancient Greek tragedy: this is the sound of Kate Kilbane & The Cellar Doors. A bassist, singer and self-ascribed literary geek, kate
and her band use Jazz and Soul-infused Rock to retell stories of Philomela, Procne, Medea—ancient Greek women whose narratives still captivate audiences today.
Kate Kilbane & The Cellar Doors are currently in the studio recording The Medea Cycle, a twelve song Rock Opera that tells the story of the ancient Greek heroine, Medea. Their second
Opera, called Weightless, tells the story of Philomela and Procne, and is slated to premiere at the San Francisco Fringe Festival in September. The band recently received a Zellerbach grant
that will establish them as residents at the Brava Theater in the Mission during the months of November and December 2012.
