Anaís Azul presents “Simp’ashani: Canciones Trenzadas”
Experimental Andean Musical Storytelling of Migration
The album “Simp’ashani: Canciones Trenzadas” is the result of the research Anaís Azul conducted while on their Fulbright U.S. Student Scholarship, which gave them the opportunity to travel to Perú to study Charango (from Ayacucho and Cusco) and Quechua (Chanka and Collao) for 9 months. “Simp’ashani” began as a project compiling Andean music to create an album of multilingual (Quechua, Spanish, and English) reinterpretations of said songs using experimental production. Now, the album also includes field recordings, interviews, and original compositions about the journey Anaís has been on re-connecting to their Indigenous ancestry. In this project, Anaís braids their Andean heritage and music with their diasporic longing in a heartfelt way.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Anais Azul (they/them) is a Peruvian-born, California-grown, composer, vocalist, and charango player. Since immigrating to the U.S. at age 4, they have longed to connect to their Andean roots. Having produced 3 EPs, in September 2024 they released their debut album “Simp’ashani: Canciones Trenzadas” with tracks ranging from sound bath-like experimental versions of Andean songs to original singer-songwriter style compositions. Whether they are writing, performing, or teaching music, Anaís is committed to decolonization and honoring Indigenous practices. Described as “stunningly honest and vulnerable,” Anaís’ artistry engages music as a tool for community building and collective healing.
