ABOUT THE PROJECT:
Three artists with over 25 years experience come together to create a unique artistic experience where Latin American Music, Venezuelan Joropo, Tambores and Flamenco set the ground for a creative performance beyond music and dance genres. Contemporary and Afro-Venezuelan Dancer Juliana Mendonca, Multi-Instrumentalist Jackie Rago and Guitarist Carlos Caminos open up a space where sound is embodied and movement is translated into sound.
Juliana Mendonca is a Venezuelan Contemporary Dance performer, choreographer and teacher. Powerful, rhythmic and sublime, her dance crosses the boundaries of style with an eloquent sense of improvisation. Juliana co-founded Raíz de Agua, a music and dance company and has performed mostly as a solo artist with the Company and through dance has found a way to connect her creativity to spirit and nature, compounded with a unique feminine and artistic self-awareness. She has drawn influences from contemporary and popular dance styles such as Butoh, Latin Traditional Dances, Contact Dance Improvisation and Physical Theater, to find a unique language with which she can express and create powerful works of art and healing.
Jackeline Rago is the artistic and musical director of the “”Venezuelan Music Project”” (Venezuelan Folk music, www.venezuelanmusicproject.com) and a founding member of the””VNote Ensemble”” (formerly The Snake Trio, www.vnotensemble.com), bands which she travels and performs with in an ongoing basis. She was also a founding member of “Altazor” (Nueva Canción ensemble),” Wild Mango” (world beat music), “Keith Terry & Crosspulse” (world percussion) and “Trio Altamira” (contemporary Latin American music).
Just recently, Rago received the “Award of Excellence in Music“ given by the Mission Cultural Center for the Latino Arts in its 30th Anniversary, in San Francisco, CA. Additionally, Jackeline is a recipient of awards and grants from the Rockefeller Foundation, California Arts Council, Meet the Composer/Readers Digest Commissioning Program, The National Endowment for the Arts, the Lila Wallace Readers Digest Foundation and AIM (Adventures in Music program sponsored by the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra). Furthermore, Rago was an Artist in Residence of the State of California from 1989 to 2001.
