World Blues Band with Nezb & Mamadou Sidibe: Acoustic West African Caribbean Fusion

December 9, 2011 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

$10 – $15

12.9Born Ernesto Browne in Pt. Fortin, Trinidad, NezB has been singing since his youth when he sang onstage with Miriam Makeba. He has sung with OJ Ekemode, Lynn Taitt, Jackie Mittoo, One Love (Randy Jackson on bass), Obeah, Mystic Wariyah, Vision, DV8, Bass Culture, and more…

Mamadou Sidibe (Mali) played a groundbreaking role in transforming the music of Mali’s Wassalou region from its origins in hunters’ sacred melodies – played on six string donso ngoni (hunter’s harps) – to a music of philosophical observations, political commentary, women’s rights, and daily life. He was one of the first to expand the instrument’s range with two extra strings, creating the popular kamalengoni. He has recently enhanced the kamalengoni even further, by creating 10 and 12 string versions. Mamadou, with artists Coumba Sidibe, Oumou Sangare and Ramatu Diakite, spread the new sounds through recordings and performances in Europe, Africa and the United States. He has also performed with Toumani Diabate, Mamadou & Vanessa, & more…

NezB: lead vocals
Mamadou Sadie: kamalengoni, Bambara vocals, calabasse, guitar, bolon
Gary Nelson: acoustic guitars, vocals
Ollie Dudek: contrabass
Waahid: percussion, congas, tabla

“Led by dreadlocked singer/songwriter Ernesto Browne, DV8 evolved out of his previous Bay Area band VISION. Ernesto fronts the band with a vibrant stage presence, finely phrased grainy vocals and a strong set of message songs, the band is one of the strongest local reggae outfits in recent history.”
– Derk Richardson, San Francisco Bay Guardian.
