Yoga Society of San Francisco Presents: Mark Deutsch & Cornelius Boots
November 2, 2018 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
$15 – $20Visionary musician, composer, and inventor of the bazantar—a 39-string upright bass—Mark Deutsch presents his long-awaited magnum opus, The Picasso Tunings, a box set of epic, otherworldly bazantar compositions. Maestro Deutsch will be joined by master bamboo bluesman Cornelius Boots playing the shakuhachi, the Zen Buddhist bamboo flute. Boots will start the evening off with a solo set of both traditional and original compositions, as well as his own provocative take on certain well-chosen covers before joining forces with Maestro Deutsch for some final musical alchemy.
FEATURING:
Mark Deutsch – bazantar
Cornelius Boots – shakuhachi
ABOUT THE ARTISTS:
Mark Deutsch is a visionary artist with a background in nonlinear mathematics, sacred systems, and cosmology. His work as a musician, inventor, and philosopher of sound have put him in rare company. In 1999, he was awarded a patent for his creation, the bazantar. Audiences are consistently amazed by what at times sounds like a group of violins or an analog synthesizer or an otherworldly Tibetan choir coming out of what looks like a decked-out upright bass.

Shakuhachi composer-performer Cornelius Boots is the world’s only full-time bamboo bluesman. A master of lost techniques, his breath-defying compositions weave together threads from rock, blues, heavy metal, and the traditional Zen Buddhist repertoire honkyoku. Boots’ experience as a jazz saxophonist, funk bandleader, orchestral clarinetist, and founder/composer of the renowned bass clarinet quartet Edmund Welles have made him a sought-after composer for bold woodwind soloists and chamber groups.
