PAINTING WORKSHOPS 2009

for children & adults

Pre-payment is necessary to secure your space in the workshop. Payments cannot be made the day of the workshop. Payments are non-refundable. This is because there is often a waiting list for the workshop and some people cancel last minute when we have already turned others away. We hope you understand.

Family Art Activities

Every Saturday, 1pm - 4pm FREE!

Every Saturday from 1 - 4pm you can find the corner of 23rd and Folsom bursting with  color and vibrance as children and families exercise their creative freedom in an open outdoor forum. All are welcome. Come by if you can!

If you are interested in volunteering to keep this program thriving, please contact ada@redpoppyarthouse.org

The Family Art Program was established to encourage creative and educational experiences in an open, outdoor forum, while promoting greater dialog among community members.

The project aspires to bring the community’s children and families together to partake in artistic endeavors that include diverse artistic and educational perspectives.

Family Art is Every Saturday
Family Art is a free space where anyone can drop in and jump into the fun.
Family Art is a free form space for young people and parents to explore their creative impulses with no limitations. Here we are more focused on the artistic process than the artistic product.

Parents can enjoy painting and drawing with their children on our collaborative group mural. Or they can sit down on our bench and make collages with our recycled materials.

WORKSHOPS 2009

THE ART OF NOT KNOWING: PART I - Painting Mixed Media & Collage
Instructed by Todd T. Brown

Finally, we have scheduled another Art of Not Knowing Workshop. We know a lot of you have been asking bout this. Due to all of the demands at the Art House over the last year we have had to schedule less workshops.

This all-day workshop is aimed at undoing the cultural assumptions we hold around creating art in order to free ourselves of our self-censor and critic. Each participant will work on a large canvas.

We will cover a number of techniques as a starting point (collage, charcoal, transparencies, layering, and wet-on-wet blending), but the focus of the workshop will remain on “not-knowing”; not knowing how to paint, or draw, or explain. We will explore how by relaxing into this space we can make spontaneous discoveries wherein our own individual process can develop.

Required Materials:

3'x4' (36x48) stretched canvas (please wire the back if you are able to)
charcoal, items for creating collage, and rags.
All other painting materials provided (brushes, paints, etc.).

Date: SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 15TH, 2009
All-day Intensive: 10am-6pm.
Instructor: Todd T. Brown (www.artist-toddbrown.com)
Cost: $95
Class size limited to 12 students.

MAKING MASTERFUL MISTAKES IN MIXED MEDIA: All-Day Workshop

Instructed by Todd T. Brown

In this workshop you will learn how to mess-up your painting repeatedly, and in multiple ways. We will explore techniques that will help you to make mistakes, and love doing so. It is a workshop that pushes students to explore what can happen when they release themselves from their internal dialogue when engaging the painting process. We will explore the use of charcoal, gesso, color, text, and collage, using brush and palette knife application techniques. Exercises are intended to increase “accidents” and thereby maximize the possibility of unanticipated discoveries. Participants can expect to learn multiple ways of using mixed media and, above all, the possibility of engaging their creative process in an entirely new way. All levels welcome. This workshop serves as an excellent introduction to painting in mixed media for beginner students, as well serving more advanced students as a helpful way to free oneself of creative blocks that can inhibit continued work.

THE ART OF NOT KNOWING: PART II - An Exploration of Color

Instructed by Todd T. Brown

This workshop follows a similar method as the Art of Not Knowing workshop in mixed media. In this class, however, we will focus primarily on the exploration of color, how to develop our own personal palette through mixing paints and layering. We will be giving particular attention to the contrast of light to dark and the relationship of muted/earth tones to brilliant pure colors.

THE ART OF NOT KNOWING: PART III - COMPOSITION DEVELOPMENT

Instructed by Todd T. Brown

Recommended for intermediate and advanced students, this workshop explores numerous ways of developing composition in painting. While the focus of Art of Not-Knowing workshop series is aimed at exploring painting techniques while maintaining a mind of “not-knowing”, free of agenda or specific concept, this workshop assists students who are at the stage of developing concepts and/or themes that they seek to express within the 2-dimensional plane of a painting. Here students discover the movement between intentionality and letting go, construction and deconstruction. In the process of developing their own unique compositions, students will discover how to engage the space of a painting through the juxtaposition of color, form, and line.

STREET LEVEL CURATING: The intersection of art, communities and cultures

Instructed by Todd T. Brown and Meklit Hadero

This 12-week class is being offered as a means of inspiring individuals and organizations to develop direct and simple ways of facilitating creative cultural exchange within neighborhoods and urban communities. With an emphasis on cultural diversity and developing neighborhood rapport, this workshop will explore some of the complex issues that surround cultural development in diverse and disparate communities as well as teach practical techniques for transforming ordinary spaces (i.e. garages, cafes, etc.) overnight into unique vibrant performance/exhibition centers.

At the end of the twelve weeks, participants will have an opportunity to put their skills into practice by co-curating one of the exhibit-performance spaces for the Mission Arts & Performance Project (MAPP) event. All levels of experience are welcome.

Todd Brown is a visual artist, musician, and community arts educator dedicated to exploring innovative approaches to cultural development in residential urban communities. He has 20 years experience in music and painting, and 10 years teaching experience. He is the Founder/Director of the Red Poppy Art house and spearheaded the initiation/development of the MAPP: Mission Arts & Performance Project.
