Currently on view at the Red Poppy Art House is a collection of recent paintings by Maykel Vargas (b. 1977, Cuba) which explores the arcane language of the primitive and the shamanistic. His works are of an Expressionist nature, which explores themes of the mystical and ancestral forces in nature as were represented and worshiped by our indigenous ancestry, or even the African deities, also carried over by our ancestry, which laid the laws that governed the natural world. The paintings are a window into the tribal, and express a dynamic sense of order and balance. You are more than welcome to come by and see, as well as share impressions on, the work of this emerging artist.

The paintings will remain on view until April 7, 2012, so make sure you enjoy them during your next visit to the Poppy

Alexis Amann: Meanwhile . . .

Exhibition of paintings at The Red Poppy Art House

Artist reception: Thursday, September 29, 6-9pm

The Red Poppy Art House is excited to present Meanwhile. . ., an exhibition of Alexis Amann’s recent paintings exploring monster women, demons, Ophelia, witches, baby belugas, fish-headed persons, and the complications of having too many or not enough eyes. Amann’s acrylic gouache paintings and installations on cut paper contain layers of worlds populated by creatures, human and otherwise, driven by the forces of love and water. She combines characters and stories from literature, pop culture, mythology, natural history and personal narrative to create new stories, worlds, and meaning within her paintings.

Amann was raised on the Oregon Coast and received her BA in Drawing/Painting/Printmaking from Portland State University in 2002 and her MFA in Painting from San Francisco Art Institute in 2006. Her work has been shown at New Image Gallery in Los Angeles, Johansson Projects in Oakland, Dust Gallery in Las Vegas, and has been included in numerous exhibitions in the Bay Area as well as Portland, Seattle, Miami and New York.
