FARED SHAFINURY: Fared Shafinury In The Moment

Award winning artist – Fared Shafinury – unearths and explores the world of classical Persian music. From a small sleepy beach town along the Gulf of Mexico, Shafinury’s musical sense crosses barriers with mutual cultural ease. His compositions thus move against the current, by retracing the arc from West to East. This is what makes the sound of Fared Shafinury and his Austin-based band, Tehranosaurus, stand out from his contemporaries.

Fared Shafinury: setar, vocals

Krikor Andonian on Electronics

Jason Ditzian on Clarinet,

Jason McKenzie on Tabla/Drumset

Roberto Paolo Riggio on Violin,

Michael Shiono on stand up Bass and

Kamran Thunder on Ney

“In his hands, the setar, an Eastern cousin of the guitar, and Fared’s virtuoso specialty, yearns not for a departure from Iranian form nor the emulation of Western genres, but arrival at the point where binaries and boundaries bleed and blend until they dissolve completely. ” -PBS Tehran Bureau

LULACRUZA: Rooted Luminous Songs Unfolding In Sonic Landscapes

LULACRUZA is an electronic folk duo operating at the junction of the hypermodern and the ancient. Their music weaves together hypnotic female singing, South American instruments, found sound objects, field recordings and electronic manipulation. Lulacruza is made up of Alejandra Ortiz (Colombia) and Luis Maurette (Argentina). Alejandra is an extraordinary songbird and plays the Colombian cuatro, shruti box, tar and kalimba, while Luis Maurette complements with electronic processing and sequencing, as well as percussion, charango and Amazonian flutes.

Band Members:
Luis Maurette
Alejandra Ortiz

“For Luis Maurette and Alejandra Ortiz, music is a test of the human spirit, of nature, and of ephemeral concepts of reality. Through live drumming and digitally altered hooks, the group manages to create a
sound that challenges what we expect from contemporary music.” – SF Bay Guardian

“Now that the novelty phase of Electrolatino fusion has passed and most of the faux-ethnic, cut-and-paste Snoozedelica can safely be moved to the recycle bin, a new generation of artists is finding newer,
subtler ways of merging traditional Latin American songwriting with subtly electronic production.” Phillip Sherburne – Earplug

The Broken Shadows & Special Guest Kasey Knudsen

A complete departure from his previous work, trumpet/composer Darren Johnston (The Nice Guy Trio, The Darren Johnston Quintet), has formed the Broken Shadows, an earthy, rootsy ensemble, although the roots from which they stem are difficult to pin down. They feature Johnston on vocals over danceable grooves, horn solos, the intensely rhythmic and adventurous bass work of David Ewell, and the boom and the clack of Marco Peris’ tupan drum.  This concert will also feature the unmistakably unique melodic approach of local sax innovator Kasey Knudsen.  One part jazz, one part Balkan music, one part country, and more… this is guaranteed to be an exciting evening of soulful songs, story-telling, and a new organic fusion of music that defies category.

Agapi Mou: Music of the Eastern Mediterranean

Agapi Mou, quite simply, is a group of four musicians drawn together by their common love of Greek traditional music. They chose the name “Agapi Mou” (meaning “my love” in Greek) to symbolize the love they feel for the music and the passion with which they play it. Formed three years ago, in Berkeley, CA, and led by the young half-Japanese duo of Aya Davidson and Gregory Masaki Jenkins, the group assembles many decades worth of experience in Greek musical genres (odd, yes, but true).

Using violin, voice, clarinet, Greek lute (laouto), and percussion, the group takes you on a listening tour of the surprisingly diverse regional styles found in Greek music. Stops on the itinerary include the islands of Crete, Rhodes, Amorgos, Ikaria, Mytillini, as well as the mainland regions of Thrace, Macedonia, Epirus, and the Peloponnese. And lastly, because love and songs respect no boundaries, don’t be surprised by a cross-border stopover in Albania, Turkey, or perhaps Armenia.

Quijeremá: The African Roots of Andean Music

To understand the music of Quijerema is similar to learning the meaning of the name of the group itself.  At first glance, the name might seem to be a locale, or a meaningful word in another language, but it is really the abbreviated combination of the names of the three founders of the group; “Qui” is for guitarist/flutist/singer Quique Cruz. “Jere” stands for Jeremy Allen the bassist/percussionist of the group, and “Ma” is percussionist/cuatro/vocalist Maria Fernanda. The layering of different names to create a new word is an apt metaphor for the Quijerema creates their music.

Quijerema often borrows rhythms, instruments, and sounds from far ranging folk traditions throughout South America and finds intriguing ways of mixing these folk traditions of different areas throughout South America together. But what is a Joropo? What is a bandola? Most audiences are unfortunately unaccustomed to hearing and knowing the myriad of distinct instruments, rhythms, and songs within the South American folk canon that Quijerema uses in their music, until now.

In this very special evening performance/workshop on March 31, the audience will be able to witness Quijerema deconstructing many of their songs, explaining the vital folk traditions that their music is based on and how they creatively layer these musical traditions into a new musical entity. When audiences learn the intricate layers behind the music of Quijerema, it will only enhance a listener’s experience. This will be a “behind the scenes” look into the music, a unique experience for anyone who is interested in knowing how and why Quijerema creates their music.

Quique Cruz: strings, winds and percussion
Jeremy Allen: bass and percussion
Maria Fernanda Acuña: percussion and Venezuelan cuatro
Henry Hung: trumpet & flugelhorn

“Using various methods of artistic expression, Quijeremá is more than just a band. They are poets and multi-media designers. Combining sounds from almost all over Latin America, their music contains a multicultural vibe that is guaranteed to impress anyone.” – SFReMezcla

Miguelito Martinez & Corazon Sur Quartet: Del Corazon Al Son

Corazón Sur’s director, Miguel Martínez (Mexico), has brought together the innovative sounds of Latin Jazz and traditional Cuban and Mexican Son with the distinctive Jarocho style of Veracruz. In the process, Martinez has formed a collaboration with some of the best musicians in the Bay Area. Tonight they will produce an evening filled with original compositions and musical arrangements that promise to create a coastal ambiance. The flute and percussions of Corazón Sur create a costal ambiance, impregnated by scents and breezes of the Caribbean, the scents of the ocean, of fruit, and of humid earth. Corazón Sur promotes and creates awareness about the musical richness and diversity of Mexico, widening the narrow view that the world has of Latin America.

La Ruya: An Evening Of Near East Flamenco

La Ruya  – Andalusia meets the Near East and Black Sea, sprinkled lightly with a hint of Piazzolla and Kafka – or something like that.  Newcomer Bay Area septet La Ruya strives to capture a sound so obvious that it has yet to be heard.  A meeting of flamenco modes and Arabic makam, darbuka and cajon, 12/8, 10/8 and 9/8… rhythms, chants and tonalities far flung in space and time that still somehow recognize each other.  Who can accurately trace the gypsy music of East and West back to their common source?  At worst this is a scholarly past time, at best it’s something approaching a new, as yet uncharted style.   La Ruya makes no pretense of tradition or authenticity – not minding the sense so long as the sounds take care of themselves.  And La Ruya’s sound depends as much on the dance as the strings, and in the dance it truly lives – hypnotic, almost ritual, it’s the final expression of the spirits summoned in the song.

David Páez – guitar
Gary Haggerty – oud
Briana Di Mara – violin
Melissa Cruz – baile and palmas
Fanny Ara – baile and palmas
Murat Bayhan – darbuka, deff

Charming Hostess: An Homage to Radical Diva Adrienne Cooper

Charming Hostess is a music ensemble at the intersection of voice, text and Diaspora consciousness. Our mission is to make lovely noise about complex ideas. We draw sonically from the sounding body – voices and winds, handclaps and heartbeats, sex-breath and silence. Individual voices and experiences come together to create a dialogic, multi-faceted whole. ChoHo’s music has been curated into the Prague Bienalle and the Museum of Peace in Uzbekistan, as well as YBCA and the Contemporary Jewish Museum in SF.  Tonight we will be honoring the radical Yiddish hero Adrienne Cooper who passed on last month.  Teacher, activist, diva, inspiration to many, Adrienne’s work went, in her words, “from grit to grace.”  She was serious about music and text, and she was also funny and fabulous.  We miss her. Tonight we will be honoring her spirit with Jewish music, traditional and new.  We will be focusing on Jewish music from the Mediterranean, but we will have some Yiddish ones in there too!

“Charming Hostess makes music like no other… Thrown in with lively North African wedding songs and Eastern European folk songs are originals that display a proudly feminist, radical-Jewish, pro-sex sensibility. The blend lets listeners discover whether they can think and dance at the same time.”
- The New York Times

“Thoroughly delightful…Ethereal melodies shift elegantly with precise rhythmic accompaniment, and the overall effect encourages an urge to dance and drink vodka.”
