SUMMARY:Contemporary Landscape Traditions in Japan
DESCRIPTION: Artist Salon linked to photographic exhibit titled Steam and Ice\, by artist Hiroyo Kaneko\, currently on view at the Poppy. Contemporary Landscape Traditions in Japan Please join us for an evening with Bay Area artist Hiroyo Kaneko in conversation with Lisa Sutcliffe\, assistant curator of photography at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art . They will be discussing Kaneko’s first solo exhibition at the Red Poppy: Steam and Ice. The exhibition presents two series\, both examining human rituals and complex relationships to the landscape. In Sentimental Education\, the artist photographed herself and her family relaxing in the hot springs on the outskirts of Tokyo. These intimate photographs\, soft in color and rich in atmosphere\, quietly examine a time-honored ritual of renewal. More recently\, the artist returned to her hometown of Aomori\, in northern Japan to record the everyday activities associated with a harsh winter climate. The third in a series of pictures exploring human rituals associated with seasons\, this work emphasizes her interest in a deep understanding of the complex ways in which we are shaped by nature even as we attempt to control it. Tracing the thread of landscape photography in Japan\, the discussion will offer a historical context for Kaneko’s work followed by a conversation with the artist. Sutcliffe and Kaneko will discuss various approaches in contemporary Japanese photography\, from the analytic examinations of Naoya Hatakeyama to the more formal explorations of Toshio Shibata and attempt to draw out the themes these artists share.

SUMMARY:JOSEH GARCIA: BICHO DO MATO
DESCRIPTION:[caption id="attachment_2022" align="alignleft" width="231" caption="Joseh Garcia Bicho do Mato 5.27.12"][/caption] Afraid of people and tired of empty social interactions he runs into the jungle. He carries with him an acoustic guitar and a computer. He longs to find comfort in the sounds of the forest. He feels like a Bicho do Mato. He is hurt. He is looking for healing and self-acceptance. * Bicho do Mato: Portuguese expression used to describe an extremely shy person. In Bicho do Mato\, the singer/songwriter Joseh Garcia takes us on a journey in which electronic and acoustic sounds meet popular music and afro-indigenous spiritual songs from Brazil. Introspection\, wild life\, and magic deities of Amazonian life are the themes of the show. Joseh sings\, plays acoustic guitar\, creates electronic sounds\, and wonderful guest musicians collaborate with their talents. This is his last performance in the Bay Area for 2012. Next stop is Canada\, and then Joseh is ready to take this new show to other corners of the world. In 2010 he released his first Ep Bossa a Trois\, recorded in France and produced by Daniel Masson. In the Bay Area he has performed in respected venues and has created innovative projects: last Feb. he did an unusual and successful concert for dogs. "Joseh Garcia's serene voice and heartbreaking stage presence embody the new wave of Bossa Nova. He composes his own songs and sings them intimately into your ears while you melt. Watch him! Listen to Him! He may well shake the boundaries of Brazilian music and cool Jazz in decades to come." - Silvia Nakkach\, award-winning composer\, voice-culturist\, music educator. SUMMARY:DAMADA
DESCRIPTION:East West Spirit Music DaMaDa is a trio of musicians based in San Francisco: Luo Dana\, a native Chinese-born singer\, actress and dancer\, Marc Schmitz\, guitarist and composer\, and singer and Dave Mihaly\, multi-instrumentalist\, percussionist\, composer and singer. Together\, they play music from throughout China in Folk\, Jazz\, Beijing Opera and Pop styles\, along with unique improvisation. DaMaDa's music is compelling\, and bridges the cultures of China with those of the United States in ways that point toward a harmonization of the two worlds of East and West. Most of their songs are sung in Mandarin. Vocalist and dancer\, Luo Danna\, grew up and was trained in China as a singer/dancer/actress and worked as part of a cadre that traveled throughout Guangxi and Guangdong provinces of China performing. Her singing style incorporates the ethnic dance language to express the meaning of the music. Guitarist Marc Schmitz and drummer Dave Mihaly are experienced San Francisco free jazz performers and composers who feel “at home” interpreting this music. DaMaDa's music is a fascinating Chinese/American collaboration/collision/communion. Luo Danna: vocals\, percussion Marc Schmitz: guitar\, vocals Dave Mihaly: drums\, percussion\, vocals “This is raw\, cutting edge music\, with a punky attitude..... Luo Danna’s voice switches with natural ease between that of a Chinese opera diva and a punky lolita....... DaMaDa: something completely different.” - Karla's Wereldmuziek\, Karla De Greeve -- Belgium http://www.damada.net/ http://www.jango.com/music/DaMaDa?l=0 http://youtu.be/3MMKR7fm1po http://youtu.be/63omy8SLnoE http://youtu.be/9Y9MHvCp1QQ http://youtu.be/5cH8zGAsyUE http://youtu.be/EdK8MiCtGKA $10 - $15 admission. SUMMARY:The Broken Shadows & Special Guest Kasey Knudsen
DESCRIPTION:A complete departure from his previous work\, trumpet/composer Darren Johnston (The Nice Guy Trio\, The Darren Johnston Quintet)\, has formed the Broken Shadows\, an earthy\, rootsy ensemble\, although the roots from which they stem are difficult to pin down. SUMMARY:Agapi Mou: Music of the Eastern Mediterranean
DESCRIPTION:Agapi Mou\, quite simply\, is a group of four musicians drawn together by their common love of Greek traditional music. They chose the name "Agapi Mou" (meaning "my love" in Greek) to symbolize the love they feel for the music and the passion with which they play it. Formed three years ago\, in Berkeley\, CA\, and led by the young half-Japanese duo of Aya Davidson and Gregory Masaki Jenkins\, the group assembles many decades worth of experience in Greek musical genres (odd\, yes\, but true). Using violin\, voice\, clarinet\, Greek lute (laouto)\, and percussion\, the group takes you on a listening tour of the surprisingly diverse regional styles found in Greek music. Stops on the itinerary include the islands of Crete\, Rhodes\, Amorgos\, Ikaria\, Mytillini\, as well as the mainland regions of Thrace\, Macedonia\, Epirus\, and the Peloponnese. And lastly\, because love and songs respect no boundaries\, don't be surprised by a cross-border stopover in Albania\, Turkey\, or perhaps Armenia. SUMMARY:FARED SHAFINURY: Fared Shafinury In The Moment
DESCRIPTION:Award winning artist - Fared Shafinury - unearths and explores the world of classical Persian music. From a small sleepy beach town along the Gulf of Mexico\, Shafinury's musical sense crosses barriers with mutual cultural ease. His compositions thus move against the current\, by retracing the arc from West to East. This is what makes the sound of Fared Shafinury and his Austin-based band\, Tehranosaurus\, stand out from his contemporaries. Fared Shafinury: setar\, vocals Krikor Andonian on Electronics Jason Ditzian on Clarinet\, Jason McKenzie on Tabla/Drumset Roberto Paolo Riggio on Violin\, Michael Shiono on stand up Bass and Kamran Thunder on Ney "In his hands\, the setar\, an Eastern cousin of the guitar\, and Fared's virtuoso specialty\, yearns not for a departure from Iranian form nor the emulation of Western genres\, but arrival at the point where binaries and boundaries bleed and blend until they dissolve completely. SUMMARY:LULACRUZA: Rooted Luminous Songs Unfolding In Sonic Landscapes
DESCRIPTION:LULACRUZA is an electronic folk duo operating at the junction of the hypermodern and the ancient. Their music weaves together hypnotic female singing\, South American instruments\, found sound objects\, field recordings and electronic manipulation. Lulacruza is made up of Alejandra Ortiz (Colombia) and Luis Maurette (Argentina). Alejandra is an extraordinary songbird and plays the Colombian cuatro\, shruti box\, tar and kalimba\, while Luis Maurette complements with electronic processing and sequencing\, as well as percussion\, charango and Amazonian flutes. Band Members: Luis Maurette Alejandra Ortiz “For Luis Maurette and Alejandra Ortiz\, music is a test of the human spirit\, of nature\, and of ephemeral concepts of reality. Through live drumming and digitally altered hooks\, the group manages to create a sound that challenges what we expect from contemporary music.” - SF Bay Guardian “Now that the novelty phase of Electrolatino fusion has passed and most of the faux-ethnic\, cut-and-paste Snoozedelica can safely be moved to the recycle bin\, a new generation of artists is finding newer\, subtler ways of merging traditional Latin American songwriting with subtly electronic production.” Phillip Sherburne - Earplug http://communikey.us/esperando/esperando.cc/LULACRUZA_EPK/LULACRUZA%20STAGE%20PLOT%202012.jpg http://communikey.us/esperando/esperando.cc/LULACRUZA_EPK/LULACRUZA_INPUT_LIST.pdf lulacruza.com music.lulacruza.com facebook.com/lulacruza twitter.com/lulacruza $12 - $20 admission. Doors at 7:30 pm. Show at 8:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Charming Hostess: An Homage to Radical Diva Adrienne Cooper
DESCRIPTION:Charming Hostess is a music ensemble at the intersection of voice\, text and Diaspora consciousness. Our mission is to make lovely noise about complex ideas. We draw sonically from the sounding body – voices and winds\, handclaps and heartbeats\, sex-breath and silence. Individual voices and experiences come together to create a dialogic\, multi-faceted whole. ChoHo’s music has been curated into the Prague Bienalle and the Museum of Peace in Uzbekistan\, as well as YBCA and the Contemporary Jewish Museum in SF. Tonight we will be honoring the radical Yiddish hero Adrienne Cooper who passed on last month. Teacher\, activist\, diva\, inspiration to many\, Adrienne's work went\, in her words\, "from grit to grace." She was serious about music and text\, and she was also funny and fabulous. We miss her. Tonight we will be honoring her spirit with Jewish music\, traditional and new. We will be focusing on Jewish music from the Mediterranean\, but we will have some Yiddish ones in there too! Jewlia Eisenberg-voice Cynthia Taylor-voice Jason Ditzian-clarinet Michael Pinkham-drums and special guests! “Charming Hostess makes music like no other... Thrown in with lively North African wedding songs and Eastern European folk songs are originals that display a proudly feminist\, radical-Jewish\, pro-sex sensibility. The blend lets listeners discover whether they can think and dance at the same time.”
- The New York Times “Thoroughly delightful...Ethereal melodies shift elegantly with precise rhythmic accompaniment\, and the overall effect encourages an urge to dance and drink vodka.”
- The New Yorker www.charminghostess.us http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZAppqYyH1PM&feature=related http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeQggYwIS0M&feature=related $10-$20 admission. SUMMARY:Quijeremá: The African Roots of Andean Music
DESCRIPTION: To understand the music of Quijerema is similar to learning the meaning of the name of the group itself. At first glance\, the name might seem to be a locale\, or a meaningful word in another language\, but it is really the abbreviated combination of the names of the three founders of the group; “Qui” is for guitarist/flutist/singer Quique Cruz. “Jere” stands for Jeremy Allen the bassist/percussionist of the group\, and “Ma” is percussionist/cuatro/vocalist Maria Fernanda. The layering of different names to create a new word is an apt metaphor for the Quijerema creates their music. Quijerema often borrows rhythms\, instruments\, and sounds from far ranging folk traditions throughout South America and finds intriguing ways of mixing these folk traditions of different areas throughout South America together. But what is a Joropo? What is a bandola? Most audiences are unfortunately unaccustomed to hearing and knowing the myriad of distinct instruments\, rhythms\, and songs within the South American folk canon that Quijerema uses in their music\, until now. In this very special evening performance/workshop on March 31\, the audience will be able to witness Quijerema deconstructing many of their songs\, explaining the vital folk traditions that their music is based on and how they creatively layer these musical traditions into a new musical entity. When audiences learn the intricate layers behind the music of Quijerema\, it will only enhance a listener’s experience. This will be a “behind the scenes” look into the music\, a unique experience for anyone who is interested in knowing how and why Quijerema creates their music. Quique Cruz: strings\, winds and percussion Jeremy Allen: bass and percussion Maria Fernanda Acuña: percussion and Venezuelan cuatro Henry Hung: trumpet & flugelhorn Plus special invited guests "Using various methods of artistic expression\, Quijeremá is more than just a band. They are poets and multi-media designers. Combining sounds from almost all over Latin America\, their music contains a multicultural vibe that is guaranteed to impress anyone." - SFReMezcla www.quijerema.com $12-$20 admission. SUMMARY:MOYURBANDO - Paintings by Maykel Vargas
DESCRIPTION:Moyurbando references the Afro-Cuban religious mythology and practices\, that inspire this new collection of oil-paintings by Cuban-born artist Maykel Vargas. Vargasʼs paintings call on ancient symbolism to express a spiritual path unique to todayʼs uncertain times. Out of the darkness\, imagery appears from a base of abstract shape and color to reveal both the symbolic\, as well as\, the everyday in his recollections of life in the streets of Havana\, Oakland and beyond. Maykel Vargas was born in Havana\, Cuba in 1977. Upon moving to the Unites States in 2008\, he began showing his work at Art Spaces such as Good Bye Blue Monday in Brooklyn\, New York. Additionally\, Vargas has worked extensively in the Bay Area as both a teacher and activist in the “Viva El Espanol Program” and “Growing Great Families Project”\, for HIV and substance abuse prevention. SUMMARY:La Ruya: An Evening Of Near East Flamenco
DESCRIPTION:La Ruya - Andalusia meets the Near East and Black Sea\, sprinkled lightly with a hint of Piazzolla and Kafka - or something like that. Newcomer Bay Area septet La Ruya strives to capture a sound so obvious that it has yet to be heard. A meeting of flamenco modes and Arabic makam\, darbuka and cajon\, 12/8\, 10/8 and 9/8… rhythms\, chants and tonalities far flung in space and time that still somehow recognize each other. Who can accurately trace the gypsy music of East and West back to their common source? At worst this is a scholarly past time\, at best it’s something approaching a new\, as yet uncharted style. La Ruya makes no pretense of tradition or authenticity – not minding the sense so long as the sounds take care of themselves. And La Ruya’s sound depends as much on the dance as the strings\, and in the dance it truly lives – hypnotic\, almost ritual\, it’s the final expression of the spirits summoned in the song. David Páez - guitar Gary Haggerty – oud Briana Di Mara - violin Melissa Cruz – baile and palmas Fanny Ara – baile and palmas Murat Bayhan – darbuka\, deff Samuel Joseph – cajon\, darbuka\, riqq\, deff http://melissacruz.weebly.com/index.html http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rGfdnrQqSyU&hd=1 http://www.fannyara.com/ $10-$12 admission. Doors at 7:30 pm. Show at 8:00 pm.

SUMMARY:THE LISA ENGELKEN BAND: Anima Explorations, Pt. II
DESCRIPTION:Extraordinary singer\, songwriter and arranger Lisa Engelken is a Kansas-born\, straight-shooter\, known for a fearless stage presence that has garnered her comparisons to Evel Kneivel\, Janis Joplin and a roaring Harley Davidson motorbike. Classically and theatrically trained\, Engelken has shared the stage with greats such as Yo La Tengo\, John Cameron Mitchell\, Stephen Trask\, Greg Brown\, T-Bone Burnett and Tom Waits. Equal parts freight train\, junkyard trombone and tumbleweed\, Engelken alternately locomotes and floats through tunes. Lisa returns to the Red Poppy after last Spring’s sold-out event that premiered her new project Anima Explorations. Lisa performs with a new band that features some of the most daring and innovative in the Bay Area. Together they will embark on the new adventure: Part II of Anima Explorations\, debuts Lisa's new compositions and arrangements as a continued exploration through voice and harmony of the opposing forces that wrestle inside each of us. Lisa plans to record the Anima Project in Spring 2012\, in follow up to Caravan 2010). Produced and arranged by Engelken\, Caravan features 10 fresh takes on Jazz standards and Brazilian tunes\, while boldly adapting songs by Billy Idol and Joni Mitchell into the Jazz idiom. The album also includes “From the Earth” a new lyric version of Freddie Hubbard’s Jazz-Funk classic “Red Clay.” The album was named among the “Best of 2010” by the Jazz Journalists Association. Lisa Engelken: vocals Gerry Grosz: vibraphone & piano Dan Feiszli: bass Matt Swindells: drums Special Guest Rob Reich: accordian “She is an utter original. Blessed with superlative power\, control and range\, Engelken can\, as mood requires\, be as soft as dew or as intense as a sleet storm; her interpretive instincts are astounding.” - Christopher Loudon\, Jazz Times “Caravan is the work of an artist with her own sound and concept\, a daring improviser with the technique to express even her most unorthodox ideas. More than a song stylist\, she’s a dramatic force.” - Andrew Gilbert\, San Jose Mercury “The title cut Caravan is indeed a revamp of the harmonies and arrangements of Debussy and the British alt-pop band Radiohead. Only Lisa E. could conspire to combine those two influences so effectively. Add singer\, composer and producer Lisa Engelken to that pantheon of great jazz artists. Caravan will stand the test of time and is a harbinger of more great music to come.” - Eric Smith\, Arts & Entertainment Editor\, BeyondChron.org “Caravan is exceptional by any standard. A winning display of imagination and freedom\, her radical interpretation is what jazz is supposed to be about.” - Ink Magazine “Bold\, lush\, exotic and just a little bit dangerous\, like waves of sound and heat: Evel Knievel and Janis Joplin. Like Evel\, she is a fearless daredevil\, but never reckless\, knowing exactly whether her voice can jump through a ring of fire and over 30 elephants--or whether it can go 31. And like Janis\, she gives every ounce of herself onstage.” - Erin Gray\, columnist for The Monterey Herald “This is a winner\, pure and simple. Savor it all.” - Ken Franckling\, Jazz Notes “You have not heard this voice\, trust me.” - Roger Atkinson\, JAM Magazine http://www.lisaengelken.com http://daily-songs.com/2011/11/18/white-wedding-by-lisa-engelken/

  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqtqaqGYjoQ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kvj3UhJ1ETo $12-$20 admission. Doors at 7:30 pm. Show at 8:00 pm.

SUMMARY:AMENDOLA VS. BLADES: Drums Vs. Hammond B3
DESCRIPTION:Wil Blades and Scott Amendola conjure various sonic deities though only a duo. Their live shows have been generating a buzz around the Bay Area. The two got their start as a group when Scott had the vision of performing Duke Ellington’s “Far East Suite” in duo with Wil. While quite a daunting task translating a suite (originally written for a big band) into duo\, the Hammond organ had previously been used in the 1940s and 1950s to emulate the sound of big bands. With Wil’s knowledge of this tradition and Scott’s desire to push boundaries\, they were able to pull it off in an explorative\, yet cohesive manner. The duo continues to perform the Ellington suite in their live performances\, while also developing their original material. In performance\, Amendola and Blades cover everything from Avant Garde to Funk\, Bebop to Rock. Scott Amendola: drums Wil Blades: Hammond B3 organ "The Amendola vs Blades duo has firmly established itself as one of the liveliest acts in the Bay Area." - Jazz Observer www.scottamendola.com www.wilblades.com http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6AvN9m_hXI $12-20 admission. Doors at 7:30 pm. Show at 8:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Tango No. 9: All Manner Of Tango
DESCRIPTION:For over 15 years\, Tango No. 9 has been exploring the breadth and depth of Tango\, from the classic sounds of the early dance standards through Astor Piazzolla's revolutionary Tango Nuevo all the way up to Tango-inspired Chamber works that were composed especially for the group. Tonight they will be presenting a mix of new additions to their repertoire as they prepare for their fifth album\, as well as old favorites. Catharine Clune - violin Greg Stephens - trombone Zoltan di Bartolo - vocal Joshua Raoul Brody - piano "Reliably excellent!" - Hurwitt\, SF Chronicle “La dolce vita\, indeed!” — Adam Savetsky\, San Francisco Bay Guardian “As soon as we got settled\, the music grabbed us by the emotional necktie and pushed us up against a sonic wall. Abandoning all desire for chat\, we gave ourselves over to the music...” — Hiya Swanhuyser\, SF Weekly “French cigarette smoke from the heart of a dark Paris café comes pouring out of this album ... the lonely sensuality of a bandoneon ... the sexy slur of a trombone ... the heartbreaking sigh of a violin and the therapeutic chords of a piano. If this quartet had a vocalist\, she would have a whiskey voice and an angel’s body.” — Chuck Graham\, Tucson Citizen www.tangonumber9.com $12-$20 admission. Doors at 7:30 pm. SUMMARY:Melissa Czarnik with Eric Mire: Jazzy-Hip Hop-Poetry
DESCRIPTION:Melissa Czarnik (Zar-nik) is one of the most vital emcees to emerge in recent years. Mixing potent poetry\, soulful hip hop and improvisatory Jazz\, Czarnik’s music exemplifies artists such as Lauryn Hill\, Ani Difranco and Nneka. Hailing from Milwaukee\, Czarnik’s first two albums Strawberry Cadillac (HMP\, 2008) and Raspberry Jesus (HMP\, 2010) have earned her recognition by NPR\, Bitch Magazine\, Bust Magazine\, Anattitude Magazine (Europe)\, and Democracy Now among others. She has toured extensively throughout the United States and was a special guest performer at the Supafly Hip Hop Series #3 in Brussels\, Belgium. In 2010\, Czarnik was interviewed on Billy Jam’s WFMU “Women in Hip Hop Special” which also featured Rah Digga and Ayana Soyini. Currently Czarnik is booking a 2012 European tour and is preparing for her French artist residency\, where she will complete her forthcoming album\, Non Merci. Melissa Czarnik – vocals Eric Mire - key board\, loop pedal\, vocals “This incredible young rapper from Milwaukee had me under her spell from the first to last moments of her album. Some of the songs are biographical\, some are issues-based and many touch on the theme of love in a raw and wise way. Whatever the subject\, Czarnik’s tracks are all verbally and musically smart. She has clear diction and there’s a musicality to the way she raps — her speaking is very much like singing. The sonic palette is very broad. I loved the use of a garbled-up Delibes “Flower Duet” in the song “Been this Way” and there are some gorgeous\, tripping saxophone solos in “Canned Nutrition.” This girl is going all the way.” - Chloe Veltman\, VoiceBox\, KALW 91.7FM "Czarnik is a soulful\, fluid rapper\, backed by the five-piece Eric Mire Band. Together\, they've produced a surprising\, potent and thoughtful mix of funk\, jazz\, soul and hip-hop." -Robin Hilton\, NPR\, All Songs Considered "With slammin’ poetry\, precise beats\, and DIY authenticity\, Czarnik is an inspiration to young MC’s everywhere."- Claire Ashton\, Bitch Magazine Website: http://www.melissaczarnik.com/default.html Youtube: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=00kdc1Qnv8E Audio Clip Melissa Czarnik “Thunder Summer Storm”: http://www.melissaczarnik.com/tss.mp3 $10-$12 admission. Doors at 7:30 pm. Show at 8:00 pm.

SUMMARY:Tito y su Son de Cuba Quinteto: Celebration la Noche Buena en Havana Vieja
DESCRIPTION:Heriberto “Tito” Gonzalez\, “El Trecero mayor”\, arrived in the San Francisco Bay area in the summer of 2000. His music is typical and primarily “El Son”. Now\, with a new life in San Francisco and the songwriter’s freedom to experiment and story-telling\, Tito\, a consummate master of Cuban traditional music\, brings a fresh sound to a lifetime of experience. Tito Gonzales spent his young life picking up guitar licks around the rim of the sea thanks to a Cuban-run company that sent fisherman like him far and wide to find the catch. The open water swept him into the urban narrows\, and\, back on dry land\, he traded up for the sound of the tres (small Cuban guitar) and the Cuban son\, yet his talent only led him to ordinary labor. Fate had in store for him a different destiny -a rapid ascendence from cabbie to celebrity and a star of the Cuban music scene. SUMMARY:Erik Deutsch, Scott Amendola, John Shifflett
DESCRIPTION:An Evening Of Original And Improvised Music\, And Reinterpretation Of American Rock Music Erick Deutsch\, John Shifflett\, and Scott Amendola have been playing as a trio on and off for a few years now. Erik lives in NY but comes out west just enough to make this trio feel like a band. From the first note things gelled. We share the appreciation for pop music and enjoy reinterpreting it with our own voices. We also enjoy playing our original music so there's a nice balance of both worlds that intertwine and help us all arrive at a very interesting place. Whether it's Mr. Bojangles\, or one of our originals\, the music is always unpredictable. But the listener is brought along for the ride as the 4th band member. Erik Deutsch: piano John Shifflett: bass Scott Amendola: drums "...drummer/signal-treater Scott Amendola is both a tyrant of heavy rhythm and an electric-haired antenna for outworldly messages (not a standard combination)." - Greg Burk\, LA Weekly www.scottamendola.com www.hammerandstring.com http://gateway.geolog.com $12-$20 admission. SUMMARY:Marcus Shelby Trio Featuring Ed Reed: Nat King Cole, Blues, Ballads and Swing
DESCRIPTION:The Marcus Shelby Trio was founded in 1997 and performs regularly in the San Francisco Bay Area\, including national and international festivals. The trio consists of Marcus Shelby (bass)\, Adam Shulman (piano) and Jeff Marrs (drums). The MST performs original compositions\, re-arranged Standards\, Spirituals\, Rhythm and Blues\, and Pop music—all with a progressive influence of Swing\, Ballads\, and Blues. The MST has released 2 CDs (“Un Faux Pas”\, “The Sophisticate”)\, and serves as the rhythm section for the Marcus Shelby Orchestra\, which has released 4 CDs\, including their last recording on Porto Franco Records Soul of the Movement. Tonight’s program will feature the dynamic vocalist Ed Reed who has made the Downbeat Critics Rising Star poll (2008\, 2009\, and 2011)\, and also a selection of original and standard compositions by Marcus Shelby. Ed Reed has several CDs out and tours and performs locally regularly. Ed Reed: “Growing up in Watts\, California in the 1930s and 40´s provided a rare musical learning environment. I was in high school talent shows with "Little Esther" Phillips and Bobby Nunn of the Coasters. I learned to sing chord changes from the man who would become jazz master Charles Mingus while he was minding his sister´s kids across the street from my house. Alienated by teachers who wanted me to go to shoe shop when I wanted to study debate\, I left high school before graduation and joined the Army where I became addicted to heroin. I served four stints in San Quentin and Folsom prisons on drug-related charges. I think\, partly due to my love of jazz\, I was able to survive those ordeals. In two of my incarcerations\, I was a featured singer in the warden´s show performing with an inmate big band with Art Pepper soloing on all of my tunes. When I wasn´t doing time\, I did many "open mikes" with jazz greats like Wardell Gray\, Art Farmer\, Hampton Hawes\, Dexter Gordon\, and others.” Ed Reed: vocals Adam Shulman: piano Marcus Shelby: bass Jeff Marrs: drums www.marcusshelby.com http://edreedsings.com/index.htm http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UrSBoArCUJ0 http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5gIK666kgUk&feature=mfu_in_order&list=UL http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YJyJbFyngLE http://edreedsings.com/index.htm $15-20 admission. SUMMARY:Boca do Rio: Brazilelectro Acoustic Madness
DESCRIPTION:Boca do Rio duo\, Kevin Welch and Alex Calatayud\, explore the band's new EP\, The Dam is Breaking. These tracks present new beats and old traditions in an eclectic mix of organic songs and sounds. The lyrics are sung in both English and Portuguese and topically range from love in the time of climate change to a young prodigy growing up in the Favelas (slums) of Rio de Janeiro. The musicians have lived these songs in live performances throughout the Bay Area and the sound is translated into a deep understanding of the harmonies and rhythms of daily life in Brazil. The songs are profoundly respectful of past traditions but are clearly syncretic and forward-looking\, heralding the arrival of an organic blend of lives lived between the Americas\, where Electronica meets the skin of the drum and all the saints dance! Kevin Welch: guitar\, vocals Alex Calatayud: percussion "Boca do Rio\, an Afro-Brazilian World music group from Northern California\, delivers a unique blend of pop hooks\, pleasing vocal harmonies\, funky rhythms\, and African percussion with contemporary beats on their EP The Dam is Breaking. The result is joyously melodic and uplifting\, with the contemporary accessibility of the Rippingtons and the depth of Stan Getz’s “The Girl from Ipanema” and the Brazilian bossa nova from years past. Boca do Rio (Portuguese for “mouth of the river”) strikes the perfect balance between delicate smoothness and energetic edginess\, resulting in vibrant\, vast landscapes of sound. Rooted in distinct instruments that seem both timeless and yet also grounded in the here and now\, The Dam is Breaking is full of energy\, passion\, vitality and life. Possessing an urgent environmental message\, every song is impeccably written\, arranged and performed\, resulting in an EP that is superbly crafted and expertly produced." -Brian Farish Radio www.bocadorio.com $10-$15 admission. He has sung with OJ Ekemode\, Lynn Taitt\, Jackie Mittoo\, One Love (Randy Jackson on bass)\, Obeah\, Mystic Wariyah\, Vision\, DV8\, Bass Culture\, and more… Mamadou Sidibe (Mali) played a groundbreaking role in transforming the music of Mali’s Wassalou region from its origins in hunters’ sacred melodies – played on six string donso ngoni (hunter’s harps) – to a music of philosophical observations\, political commentary\, women’s rights\, and daily life. He was one of the first to expand the instrument’s range with two extra strings\, creating the popular kamalengoni. He has recently enhanced the kamalengoni even further\, by creating 10 and 12 string versions. Mamadou\, with artists Coumba Sidibe\, Oumou Sangare and Ramatu Diakite\, spread the new sounds through recordings and performances in Europe\, Africa and the United States. SUMMARY:Prasant Radhakrishnan's VidyA: South Indian Classical Meets Jazz
DESCRIPTION:VidyA merges Jazz with the melodic and rhythmic nuance of South Indian Classical (Carnatic) music. Led by critically-acclaimed saxophonist\, Prasant Radhakrishnan along with David Ewell (bass)\, Sameer Gupta (drums) - Hamir Atwal performs as guest drummer at this performance. VidyA has emerged with a soulful\, penetrating sound that pushes the labels of "fusion" or "world music." These artists have an almost telepathic interplay\, incorporating the forward motion of both Indian Classical and Jazz rhythms while elaborating Carnatic ragas infused with melodic richness. The group weaves in and out of the two genres while all the time merging them into one. VidyA translates the language of Carnatic music into the idiom of Jazz. VidyA has been featured at venues such as SFJazz\, San Jose Jazz\, Yoshi's\, Asian American Film Festival\, Recontraire Internationale in France and more. Radhakrishnan's original compositions for VidyA have been commissioned by the De Young Museum via the Jazz at Intersection series and awarded the Zellerbach Family Fund grant among others in 2010. VidyA will release their second studio album of original compositions later this year. Prasant Radhakrishnan: Saxophone David Ewell: Bass Drums: TBA “...Pioneering trans-cultural terrain." - San Francisco Chronicle “VidyA's music breathes at the very center of a cultural crossroads between the North American jazz idiom and the Carnatic music of South India. VidyA's music is a new vein of North American music... present tense\, present location\, new culture in the making." - Todd Brown\, Red Poppy Art House “…when these patterns are played on saxophone\, violin\, string bass\, and jazz drums\, there is a build-up of emotional energy and intellectual complexity which seems to recreate the energy that was present at the birth of bebop in 1940s New York. In fact\, if Charlie Parker or Dizzie Gillespie had heard VidyA at that time\, I think it would have never have occurred to them that VidyA’s music was Indian. They would simply have wondered where these cats had found a sound that was so mercilessly free of the standard melodic and rhythmic clichés.” - Teed Rockwell\, India Currents “A style that's madly percussive and sparkling… combines jazz's sweet dreaminess with the Indian form's insistent rhythmic and tonal changes.” – SF Weekly "Imagine ragas and American blues folded into a single moment. It's a fusion of Indian classical and jazz\, and the leader\, Prasant Radhakrishnan\, 24\, points the way for a number of Bay Area improvisers.” - San Francisco Chronicle\, “Year in Jazz” (January 2007). http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_hv9eW47W4A http://vidyamusic.com http://prasantmusic.com http://music.prasantmusic.com/album/vidya $15 admission. Cash only. SUMMARY:RAMANA VIEIRA & ENSEMBLE: The New Voice Of Portuguese World Music
DESCRIPTION: Labeled "The new voice of Portuguese world music" by Mundo Portugues magazine\, Ramana Vieira pulls traditional Portuguese Fado music into the 21st century with her powerful vocals and unique stylings. Juxtaposing unconventional instrumental layers over Fado's haunting melodies and melancholy stories of heartache and disappointment\, she updates old-world ballads while maintaining the integrity of this time-honored tradition. This powerful vocalist is making her mark as one of the premier contemporary Fado artists today. Ramana's rich\, musical artistry combined with her unconventional original style has transported audiences throughout the world with highlights that include receiving being quoted in the New York Times this March about her influences and Fado music. “Amália Rodrigues is in my DNA\, but so is Kate Bush\, and I started out in a new-wave band\,” Ms. Vieira said before a recent performance in New York. “My purpose is to open up the Fado and keep exploring it. My group doesn’t have a traditional Fado configuration\, so we’ve had to evolve.” Vieira also received the honor of being invited to Macau\, China to headline the huge "Encontro Festival\," where she wowed the audience during closing ceremonies and was chosen to appear on the front cover of the Macau Journal. Moreover\, she shared the stage with Grammy nominated Fadista Mariza; performing her original song "Unido Para Amar" for the 2006 Winter Olympics video montage. In addition\, Ramana made her international debut with RPT TV Portuguese network. She also was chosen to sing for the Grammy's 50th Awards special Music Cares benefit to honor Aretha Franklin. Ramana Vieira's CD "Lagrimas De Rainha (Tears of a Queen)"\, released in 2009 by The Pacific Coast Jazz Label\, climbed to 43 on the World Music Radio charts nationally. Ramana Vieira: vocals Laura Boytz: cello Michael McMorrown: Portuguese guitarra Jeffrey Luiz: classic guitar Stephen La Porta: percussion Alberto Ramirez: electric bass "Conservatory trained singer Ramana Vieira brings a New Age sensibility to the Fado with the instrumentation of cello and drums."-Larry Rohter\, New York Times "No one in the United States is doing more to breathe new life into Fado than Ramana Vieira\, a sultry\, dramatic singer.” - Andrew Gilbert\, San Francisco Chronicle “Ramana Vieira deserves a prominent place in the front rank of today's Fado singers\, you will feel transported to another place....maybe Bairro Alto\, Lisbon... Ramana Vieira is a force in spreading awareness of Fado\, having developed her style in California\, abroad in Portugal\, and listening to its many modes." - Andrew Gilbert\, Boston Globe "If anyone can expand Fado’s audience and take the music from Portuguese dive bars to PBS specials\, it’s Vieira." SUMMARY:THE DARREN JOHNSTON QUINTET: CD Release Concert For "The Big Lift"
DESCRIPTION: Darren Johnston has been a ubiquitous creative force on the Bay Area music scene for over a decade now\, as a composer\, trumpeter\, and a bandleader. As a sideman he currently performs with Meklit Hadero (Ethiopian-born singer-songwriter)\, Brass Menazeri (Balkan brass band)\, Cylinder (avant-jazz)\, The Marcus Shelby Orchestra (big band jazz)\, and others. All of these seemingly disparate approaches to making music lend insight into his work\, which lies somewhere in between genres\, remaining unique\, and difficult to pin down\, but a lot of fun. As a leader\, he focuses on the Nice Guy Trio\, who has a new release on Porto Franco Records featuring the trio with a string quartet\, and the Darren Johnston Quintet. The first Darren Johnston Quintet recording\, “The Edge Of The Forest” on Clean Feed Records\, received much critical praise including four stars by four very different writers in Down Beat Magazine’s “Hot Box.” Tonight’s concert will be the West Coast CD release of “The Big Lift\,” on Porto Franco Records\, featuring Darren's Chicago version of this quintet. Selections from the new recording will be played\, plus some newer original works\, and reconstructions of folk music from Bulgaria\, Egypt\, and Scotland. “Three old horns find unexpectedly eccentric new voices in this soft-spoken mischief. There is an acerbic charm and emotional detachment at work that is cool\, consistent\, smartly calculated and positioned just so between straight jazz (“Apples”) and uneasy awkwardness. The ensembles often have a lovely quirky elegance. Worth the risk.” – John McDonough\, Downbeat Magazine “Someone to watch\, on trumpet of course\, but as a composer and bandleader as well.” – John Corbett\, Downbeat Magazine Darren Johnston - trumpet Ben Goldberg - clarinet Sheldon Brown - bass clarinet\, tenor sax David Ewell - bass Hamir Atwal - drums http://darrenjohnstonmusic.com/

SUMMARY:THE DAN ZEMELMAN QUARTET: Smokin' Original & Standard Jazz
DESCRIPTION:Dan began piano at age 5\, playing classical music. He developed a passion for Jazz in early adulthood\, studying with Richard Davis at UW Madison and receiving an award as 'Best Jazz Artist' at UW Madison in 1996. In 1998\, as part of the Kennedy Center’s prestigious Jazz Ambassadors program\, he toured India and Sri Lanka courtesy of the US State Department\, representing America’s Jazz tradition through teaching and performances. He is now an in-demand Jazz pianist in the bay area and currently plays regularly with the Bay Area's great bassist/composer Marcus Shelby as well as his own group\, The Dan Zemelman Quartet\, that debuted at Yoshi's in 2009. Last year they received an honorary position as an alternate band for Jazz at Lincoln Center's 2010 Rhythm Road music abroad program. This is the group's 4th time at the Red Poppy. Tonight the Quartet will present an array of originals and standards\, showcasing the brilliant trumpeter Erik Jekabson and fiery rhythm section of Greg Wyser-Pratte on drums and Chris Lopes on bass. As always\, the evening's performance will be spontaneous\, passionate\, diverse and highly improvisational. Dan Zemelman: piano Erik Jekabson: trumpet Greg Wyser-Pratte: drums Chris Lopes: bass "While Zemelman possesses a lovely touch and fertile harmonic imagination\, what stands out most on One Way Or Another is the probing lyricism that undergirds his group concept. He gives his formidable collaborators plenty of space\, but the improvisation is always tightly bound to the melodic line. The resulting music is playful\, tender\, celebratory and consistently engaging\, a rare project that compels a second\, third and fourth spin." - Andy Gilbert\, SF/bay area jazz critic\, on Dan Z's debut CD One Way or Another "Zemelman is\, after all\, an intimidatingly good pianist. He uses choice voicings\, he obviously listens carefully to his other band members\, and he writes some interesting song heads....He uses cool modern harmonies and emphasizes the dark edges of each chord. His tunes propel themselves forward with driving rhythms\, but in his solos Zemelman often moves in and out of time.....The material here doesn't have the same intentionally difficult or earth-shatteringly experimental qualities that you sometimes hear in contemporary jazz\, but it's really well put together." - Rachel Swan\, East Bay Express\, on Dan Z's debut CD One Way or Another www.danzemelman.com www.livestream.com/yoshis/video?clipId=pla_f525c1b1-38d7-4072-9855-91522ce09ef4 www.danzemelman.com/pages/newmusic Doors at 7:30 pm.
