SoupSF

Come check out the first ever SoupSF… at the Red Poppy Art House!

Designed to use community-driven financial support to democratically fund new and emerging projects, SoupSF is inspired by successful precursors such as Chicago INCUBATE’s Sunday Soup and Brooklyn’s FEAST.

The idea: 1) $15 donation gets you soup and a vote. 2) Three teams present projects to benefit the community. 3) Attendees vote to grant the proceeds from the meal to the most inspiring and promising project.

Maybe you’re starting a community garden or farmer’s market. Or you’re a muralist with a vision for a decrepit wall. Or maybe you’re building an installation or pop-up art experience. If it makes the community a happier place, it can get funded ($300-$500) at SOUP SF.

Submissions are judged for:
1) creativity
2) value to community
3) ability to execute

For more information or to submit a proposal to be one of the projects considered, please visit:

Volunteer Orientation and Artist Salon, hosted by the Family Art Program Featuring Jeremy Mintz

Singer Song Writer pursuing his Doctorate in Psychology at the California Institute of Integral Studies. Small discussion and Q&A on the Role of music as communal expression after performance.

Along with playing strings and providing back-up vocals for the contemporary Afro-Latino group – YeYe – Jeremy also performs a wide array of his own original music and unique covers. With a remarkable ability to absorb and incorporate music from seemingly any source, Jeremy uses his own voice to tell the story of the places he’s been and the people he’s known. Through his travels in Asia and the Americas, he has learned to play over a dozen instruments, which allows him to draw upon an impressively eclectic mix of influences. For this intimate evening, he will be taking the audience through a retrospective of his life through song. In doing so, Jeremy hopes to convey the richness of traditional song forms, presented with a modern sensibility. The evening will also shed light upon the ever-important role music has in bringing forth communal expression.

Instruments will include:

guitar, charango, sikus/zamponas (panpipes), bansuri (Indian flute),

Nepali Sarangi, and South Asian jaw harps

Occupy Everywhere Tour Returns to SF

As part of the Red Poppy’s Artist Salon series, on November 9th Rupa & the April Fishes will be joining us with Mona Caron.

Artist Salons are an intergal part of the Red Poppy Art House’s programming, offering a casual, accessible, and experimental environment for artists and members of the community to share work and develop dialog around creative initiatives as well as social, cultural and political issues. These bimonthly events began essentially as “Open Studio” nights, where artists-in-residence at the Red Poppy and other local people of varying backgrounds and disciplines would gather. Artist Salons now take on a range of formats, including but not limited to: film screenings, poetry readings, one night exhibitions, critique sessions, workshops, musical performances, lectures, etc.

Wednesday November 9th 7-9pm

Occupy Everywhere Tour Returns to SF
Rupa & the April Fishes with Mona Caron
In October 2011, SF-based global mashup artists Rupa & the April Fishes together with muralist Mona Caron embarked on one of their most profound tours yet, playing in places where the global struggle for the end of capitalism and the beginning of another way is felt with striking impact–in Greece and in India, for kings and beggars, in castles, in social centers and in the slums. Strangely timed with the Occupy Wall Street movement which has been spreading around the world, this group of artists exchanged ideas and artwork with local folks in these faraway places, strengthening ties through inquiry into and articulation of a common struggle. Please come join them for an informal evening of stories from the road, a slideshow documenting their experiences of the group and an opportunity to ask questions and share your own thoughts about occupying everywhere. This will be a free and open event with potluck dinner, so please feel free to bring food to share.
