The Evan Francis Group: Adventurous And Heartfelt Original Music
January 8, 2012 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm
$10 – $15The Evan Francis Group is a boundary-pushing, six-piece ensemble that presents melodic and rich woodwinds over an organic patchwork of Afro-Latin, Avant-garde and Groove rhythms. The rhythmically-active music is adventurous, dramatic and entirely heartfelt. Inspiration for this music is especially drawn from modern Cuban Timba music as well as wildly expressive Americans like Rahsaan Roland Kirk and Charlie Mingus. Evan Francis is a San Francisco-based woodwind artist and composer who made his way performing and recording with the likes of Stevie Wonder, Marcus Shelby, Billy Higgins, Talib Kweli, Darren Johnston, Lyrics Born, Dr. Art Davis, Jazz Mafia, and Mike Keneally.

“I can visualize the spirits of Rahsaan Roland Kirk & Eric Dolphy looking on with pride… a bit of the funk/soul/house groove, tasty beats…it’s invigorating & refreshing to hear a contemporary jazz group actually moving the dialog ahead.” – Jeffrey Jones, Music Director WOJB FM 88.9
“Aside from being a hefty instrumentalist, he’s a terrific composer …..Francis likes to experiment. He’s the composer’s equivalent to a restless teenager, always shifting grooves or mixing and matching” -Rachel Swan, East Bay Express
