Taraf de Locos: Balkan, Latin & More – DOUBLE SHOW!
August 25 @ 6:30 pm - 10:00 pm| $15 - $20
“Taraf” means “band” in Romanian, “Locos” means “crazies” in Spanish, and “de” means “of” in both languages–the perfect name for a group who lives at the intersection of Greek, Albanian, Turkish, New Orleans, Mexican, and Cuban music. If their previous Red Poppy shows are any indication, this quintet’s rare break from a self-imposed hiatus promises to be a very special performance.
Tano Brock – alto sax, clarinet, guitar, vocals
Aya Safiya – violin, vocals
Cecilia-Cassandra Peña Govea – trumpet, vocals
Miguel Leon – percussion, vocals
Mireya Leon – bass
Taraf de Locos derives cultural relevance and power from the established Balkan and Latin music traditions of San Francisco’s Mission district and the larger Bay Area. Founding members Tano Brock, Aya Safiya, Cecilia-Cassandra Peña-Govea, and Miguel Leon grew up together at a music camp in California, and in 2014, they named their new band Taraf de Locos, which signifies the meeting point between Balkan and Latin music, the group’s most predominant genres. Bassist Mireya León joined the group in 2016, just in time for a U.S. tour to support their self-titled debut.
