Miguelito Martinez: Cuba le canta a México

October 22, 2016 @ 7:30 pm - 10:00 pm

$15 – $20

The music of flautist Miguelito Martinez bridges the Afro-Caribbean rhythms of Cuba, the powerful melodies of Mexico, and the sounds of traditional jazz. His latest album, Cuba le canta a México, honors the musicians and composers who have contributed to these musical traditions.

Born in Chiapas, Mexico, Miguelito Martinez studied music education and transversal flute at the University of Science and Art in Chiapas and La Universidad Veracruzana, with training in Kodály and Orff. He is the founding director of the Mexican-Caribbean ensemble Corazon Sur and the co-director of Balamcoatl, a collaborative project focused on promoting the rich music and dance traditions of the indigenous people of Mexico. In 2014 he received a grant by the San Francisco Friends of Chamber of Music to produce Cuba le canta a México, an album adapting Mexican music to Caribbean rhythms and structures
